Human dental pulp is a highly dynamic tissue equipped with a network of resident immunocompetent cells that play a major role in the defense against pathogens and during tissue injury. Animal studies are mandatory and complementary to in vitro experiments when studying the physiopathology of dental pulp, new diagnostic tools, or innovative therapeutic strategies. This animal approach makes it possible to define a benefit-risk ratio necessary to be subsequently tested in humans. Among the animal ...

Abstract Sponges branch basally in the metazoan phylogenetic tree and are believed to be composed of four distinct lineages with still uncertain relationships. Indeed, some molecular studies propose that Homoscleromorpha may be a fourth Sponge lineage, distinct from Demospongiae in which they were traditionally classified. They harbour many features that distinguish them from other sponges and are more evocative of those of the eumetazoans. They are notably the only sponges to possess a basement ...

The increasing CO2 concentration in the Earth's atmosphere, mainly caused by fossil fuel combustion, has led to concerns about global warming. A technology that could possibly contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions is the in-situ mineral sequestration (long term geological storage) or the ex-situ mineral sequestration (controlled industrial reactors) of CO2. In the present study, we propose to use coal combustion fly-ash, an industrial waste that contains about 4.1 wt.% of lime (CaO), to sequester ...

Arboviruses, i.e., viruses transmitted by blood-sucking arthropods, trigger significant global epidemics. Over the past 20 years, the frequency of the (re-)emergence of these pathogens, particularly those transmitted by Aedes and Culex mosquitoes, has dramatically increased. Therefore, understanding how human behavior is modulating population exposure to these viruses is of particular importance. This synthesis explores human behavioral factors driving human exposure to arboviruses, focusing on household ...

As a part of structure–activity relationship studies on rebeccamycin analogues, compounds containing two aza-indole moieties were synthesized bearing either a methyl group or a hydrogen atom on the imide nitrogen. The azaindole substructures were expected to enhance the cytotoxicity toward tumor cell lines through stronger hydrogen bonding with the target enzyme(s). The cytotoxicities of compounds 8, 10 and 19 against a panel of tumor cell lines were examined and compared with those of rebeccamycin, ...

Passion fruit fiber pectin gels represent a new alternative pectin source with potential for food and non-food applications on a commercial scale. Pectic polysaccharides were extracted from passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) fiber using citric acid as a clean catalyst and autoclaved for 20 to 60 min at 121℃. The best condition of pectin yield with the highest molecular weight was obtained with 1.0% of citric acid (250 ㎎/g dry passion fruit fiber pectin) for 20 min of autoclaving. Spectroscopic analyses ...

Abstract Vertebrate organs require locally adapted blood vessels 1,2 . The gain of such organotypic vessel specializations is often deemed to be molecularly unrelated to the process of organ vascularization. Here, opposing this model, we reveal a molecular mechanism for brain-specific angiogenesis that operates under the control of Wnt7a/b ligands—well-known blood–brain barrier maturation signals 3–5 . The control mechanism relies on Wnt7a/b-dependent expression of Mmp25, which we find is enriched in ...

Abstract The objective of this study was to develop a simple and useful injection protocol for imaging cadaveric vascularization and dissection. Mixtures of contrast agent and cast product should provide adequate contrast for two types of ex vivo imaging (MRI and CT) and should harden to allow gross dissection of the injected structures. We tested the most popular contrast agents and cast products, and selected the optimal mixture composition based on their availability and ease of use. All mixtures ...

We report the experimental realization of a non-galvanic, primary thermometer capable of measuring the electron temperature of a two-dimensional electron gas with negligible thermal load. Such a thermometer consists of a quantum dot whose temperature-dependent, single-electron transitions are detected by means of a quantum-point-contact electrometer. Its operating principle is demonstrated for a wide range of electron temperatures from 40 to 800 mK. This noninvasive thermometry can find application ...

Copper loaded with 5 at ppm hydrogen exhibits an internal friction relaxation peak at 150 K (period of the alternative stress: 2 s). This peak, called PH, can be interpreted as a consequence of the interaction between dislocations and hydrogen atoms and can be described by means of a thermomechanical break-away model. The main features of PH are discussed in connection with cold-work ratio, hydrogen content (in the range 0 to 5 × 10−6), strain amplitude (in the range 10−5 to 10−4), and conditions of ...

During processing of plant-based foods, cell wall polysaccharides and polyphenols, such as procyanidins, interact extensively, thereby affecting their physicochemical properties along with their potential health effects. Although hemicelluloses are second only to pectins in affinity for procyanidins in cell walls, a detailed study of their interactions lacks. We investigated the interactions between representative xylose-containing water-soluble hemicelluloses and procyanidins. Turbidity, ITC and ...

The global warming of Earth's near-surface, air and oceans in recent decades is a direct consequence of anthropogenic emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere such as CO2, CH4, N2O and CFCs. The CO2 emissions contribute approximately 60% to this climate change. This study investigates experimentally the aqueous carbonation mechanisms of an alkaline paper mill waste containing about 55 wt% portlandite (Ca(OH)2) as a possible mineralogical CO2 sequestration process. The overall carbonation ...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder associated with cholinergic dysfunction, provoking memory loss and cognitive dysfunction in elderly patients. The cholinergic hypothesis provided over the years with molecular targets for developing palliative treatments for AD, acting on the cholinergic system, namely, acetylcholinesterase and α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7 nAChR). Symptomatic treatment of myasthenia gravis is based on the use of peripherally-acting acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors that, in some cases, must be discontinued due to the occurrence of a number of side-effects. Thus, new AChE inhibitors are being developed and investigated for their potential use against this disease. Here, we have explored two alternative approaches to get access to peripherally-acting AChE inhibitors as new agents against myasthenia gravis, by structural modification of ...
