From the discovery of the Zika virus (ZIKV) in 1947 in Uganda (Africa), until its arrival in South America, it was not known that it would affect human reproductive life so severely. Today, damage to the central nervous system is known to be multiple, and microcephaly is considered the tip of the iceberg. Microcephaly actually represents the epilogue of this infection's devastating process on the central nervous system of embryos and fetuses. As a result of central nervous system aggression by the ...

For hypertensive women in CHIPS (Control of Hypertension in Pregnancy Study), we assessed whether the maternal benefits of tight control could be achieved, while minimizing any potentially negative effect on fetal growth, by delaying initiation of antihypertensive therapy until later in pregnancy. For the 981 women with nonsevere, chronic or gestational hypertension randomized to less-tight (target diastolic blood pressure, 100 mm Hg), or tight (target, 85 mm Hg) control, we used mixed-effects logistic ...

Suboptimal detection and response to recent outbreaks, including COVID-19 and mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), have shown that the world is insufficiently prepared for public health threats. Routine monitoring of detection and response performance of health emergency systems through timeliness metrics has been proposed to evaluate and improve outbreak preparedness and contain health threats early. We implemented 7-1-7 to measure the timeliness of detection (target of ≤7 days from emergence), notification ( ...

This study aimed to evaluate the properties of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) with different hemicellulose contents and cellulose II polymorphs. A link was found between these polysaccharides and the properties of CNFs. A decrease in crystallinity (from 69 to 63%) and changes in the crystalline structure of cellulose subjected to an alkaline environment were observed, promoting the partial conversion of cellulose I to cellulose II (from 2 to 42%) and preventing CNFs production at NaOH concentrations higher ...

Lignin-cellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) are of attracting an increasing interest due to the benefits of maintaining the lignin in the nanomaterial composition. The production of LCNF requires considerable energy consumption, which has been suppressed employing pretreatment of biomass, in which it highlights those that employ enzymes that have the advantage of being more environmentally friendly. Some negative aspects of the presence of lignin in the fiber to obtain cellulose nanofibrils is that it can ...

A recent phylogenetic analysis has shown that the genus Stephanopis comprises several different lineages of bark-dweller crab spiders. The ones with South American distribution that present a close relationship with other Neotropical genera like Epicadus, Onocolus, Rejanellus and Epicadinus were recovered in a single clade, with good support and stability. Here, we present a taxonomic review of Stephanopis species attributed to the ‘pentacantha clade’, proposing the new genus Kryptochroma Machado ...

Abstract The establishment of parasitic infection is dependent on the development of efficient strategies to evade the host defense mechanisms. Phosphatidylserine (PS) molecules are pivotal for apoptotic cell recognition and clearance by professional phagocytes. Moreover, PS receptors are able to trigger anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive responses by phagocytes, either by coupled enzymes or through the induction of regulatory cytokine secretion. These PS-dependent events are exploited by parasites ...

Abstract Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is associated with poor perinatal prognosis and a higher risk of stillbirth, neonatal death, and cerebral palsy. Its detection and the evaluation of its severity by new Doppler velocimetric parameters, such as aortic isthmus (AoI), are of great relevance for obstetrical practice. The AoI is a vascular segment that represents a point of communication between the right and left fetal circulations. It is considered to be a functional arterial shunt that ...

Abstract The objective of this study was to verify the effect of the hemicellulose content of commercial bleached pulps on the ease of mechanical fibrillation and on its energy consumption (EC). NaOH in concentrations of 5% with 2 h of reaction, and 10% with 1 and 2 h of reaction, was evaluated for the partial removal of hemicelluloses. Pulp fibrillation was influenced by hemicellulose removal, being less fibrillated when excessive removal occurred (in the range of 4–8.5%). Hemicellulose content in ...

The systematics and taxonomy of Neotropical stephanopines have been extensively studied over the last years (Machado et al. 2015; Silva-Moreira & Machado 2016; Machado et al. 2017, 2018; Prado et al. 2018). According to Machado et al. (2017), the genera Epicadus Simon, Epicadinus Simon and Onocolus Simon form a clade of taxa with characteristic structure of the male genitalia, consisting of a long and filiform embolus, discoid tegulum and the canoe-shaped RTA fused at the basis with an acute and curved ...

Among South American pholcid genera, Mesabolivar Gonzales-Sponga, 1998 is the largest with 94 species (World Spider Catalog 2019). Over the last two decades, most of these species were described from forest and caves (Huber 2000, 2018a; Huber 2005; Machado et al. 2007a,b,c, 2013). Besides a well-resolved taxonomy, many Mesabolivar species' natural history is described. Such kind of information has been used both to quantify the spider diversity in caves and to hypothesize how species arrived and diversified ...

Leishmaniases are infectious diseases, caused by protozoa of the Leishmania genus. These drugs present high toxicity, long-term administration, many adverse effects and are expensive, besides the identification of resistant parasites. In this work, the antileishmanial activity of quinoline derivative salts (QDS) was evaluated, as well as the toxicity on mammalian cells and the mechanism of action of the most promising compound. Among the compound tested, only the compound QDS3 showed activity against ...

The Neotropical crab spider genera Tobias Simon, 1895 and Epicadus Simon, 1895 comprise species with remarkable somatic morphology and confounding taxonomic history. The results of our recent cladistic analysis corroborate and extend preceding taxonomic assumptions in showing that Tobias is a junior synonym of Epicadus. In the present paper the six species recently transferred from Tobias to Epicadus are redescribed. Two new species are described based on both males and females: Epicadus dimidiaster ...

Toxoplasma gondii, the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, is a widespread intracellular parasite able to infect virtually any nucleated cell. T. gondii infection of activated macrophages inhibits nitric oxide (NO) production; however, parasite effectors responsible for this block have not been defined. Macrophage populations are extremely heterogeneous, responding differently to stimuli and to parasite infection. Here we evaluated the inhibition of NO production caused by T. gondii infection of J774- ...

We have described previously our percutaneous fetoscopic technique for the treatment of open spina bifida (OSB). However, approximately 20-30% of OSB defects are too large to allow primary skin closure. Here we describe a modification of our standard technique using a bilaminar skin substitute to allow closure of large spinal defects. The aim of this study was to report our clinical experience with the use of a bilaminar skin substitute and a percutaneous fetoscopic technique for the prenatal closure ...

Sugarcane is one of the world's most profitable crops. Waste steam-exploded sugarcane bagasse (SEB) is a cheap, abundant, and renewable lignocellulosic feedstock for the next-generation biofuels. In nature, fungi seldom exist as planktonic cells, similar to those found in the nutrient-rich environment created within an industrial fermenter. Instead, fungi predominantly form biofilms that allow them to thrive in hostile environments. In turn, we adopted an RNA-sequencing approach to interrogate how ...
