This paper reflects results of research related to developing a new methodology for automatic graph drawing based on applying genetic algorithms. The methodology has permitted the elaboration of a hybrid technique that combines the most popular, classical, topology-shape-metric approach to orthogonal drawings on the grid and a genetic algorithm that is directed, in its evolutionary process, at multicriteria decision making in a fuzzy environment. In the traditional use of the topology-shape-metric ...

Rigid-flexible satellites are aerospace systems with flexible parts attached to their structures, such as antennas or solar panels. Attitude Control Systems (ACS) of satellites are responsible for spatial orientation concerning a fixed reference for executing maneuvers. As a result, ACS can lead to problems in flexible structures, especially in large-scale movements, as undesired vibrations may be induced in the system, which can impair the satellite’s mission. Then, ACS must be designed to carry ...

Copy number alterations (CNAs) in genes committed to B-cell precursors have been associated with poor survival in subgroups of patients with B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL). We investigated submicroscopic alterations in a series of 274 Brazilian children with BCP-ALL by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification and evaluated their correlation with clinical and laboratory features. The relevance of overlapping CNA abnormalities was also explored. Deletions/amplifications ...

Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, is an obligatory intracellular parasite with a digenetic life cycle. Due to the variety of host environments, it faces several sources of oxidative stress. In addition to reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by its own metabolism, T. cruzi must deal with high ROS levels generated as part of the host's immune responses. Hence, the conclusion that T. cruzi has limited ability to deal with ROS (based on the lack of a few enzymes involved with ...

Space systems are extremely complex and expensive robotic devices used in scientific, military and communication applications.Attitude control for aerospace systems is responsible for ensuring that the space object is in position, velocity and correct trajectories, stabilizing the spacecraft and guiding in the desired directions during the mission, regardless of external disturbances. Therefore, control systems design must satisfy the satellite's operating requirements and deal with several physical ...

Currently, digital filters are employed in a wide range of signal processing applications, using fixed- and floating-point processors. Regarding the former, some filter implementations may be highly prone to errors, due to problems related to finite word-length. In particular, signal processing modules may produce overflows and unwanted noise, which are caused by quantization and round-off effects, during accumulative-addition and multiplication operations. As a consequence, the system output may ...

Trypanosoma cruzi is exposed to oxidative stresses during its life cycle, and amongst the strategies employed by this parasite to deal with these situations sits a peculiar trypanothione-dependent antioxidant system. Remarkably, T. cruzi's antioxidant repertoire does not include catalase. In an attempt to shed light on what are the reasons by which this parasite lacks this enzyme, a T. cruzi cell line stably expressing catalase showed an increased resistance to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) when compared ...

Coccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis with a variable clinical presentation. Misdiagnosis of coccidioidomycosis as bacterial pneumopathy leads to inappropriate prescription of antibiotics and delayed diagnosis. This report describes an outbreak among armadillo hunters in northeastern Brazil in which an initial diagnosis of bacterial pneumonia was later confirmed as coccidioidomycosis caused by Coccidioides posadasii. Thus, this mycosis should be considered as an alternative diagnosis in patients ...

Studies with a number of molecular markers identified up to six groups in the T. cruzi population, which showed distinct levels of genetic variability. To investigate the ...

The main consequence of oxidative stress is the formation of DNA lesions, which can result in genomic instability and lead to cell death. Guanine is the base that is most susceptible to oxidation, due to its low redox potential, and 8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG) is the most common lesion. These characteristics make 8-oxoG a good cellular biomarker to indicate the extent of oxidative stress. If not repaired, 8-oxoG can pair with adenine and cause a G:C to T:A transversion. When 8-oxoG is inserted during DNA ...
