This work shows the analysis of the fluid‐structure over the mixing time in a ladle furnace. A 1/7 scale acrylic model is constructed from a 135 t ladle, the injection configuration, and the gas flow injected at the bottom of the model are varied. The techniques applied for this study are Colorimetry, Conductimetry (KCl), and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The results indicate that the number, size, and location of the recirculations in the bulk of the fluid have a noteworthy effect on the mixing ...

The effect of adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) on the release of four regulatory peptides from the anterior pituitary of male rats has been studied using an in vitro perfusion system. Quartered anterior pituitaries from male adult Wistar rats were perfused with buffer containing different concentrations of ACTH and, subsequently, 56 mM KC1. Fractions of 1.5 ml were collected at 3 min intervals and analyzed for vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), galanin, 7B2, and substance P, using specific radioimmunoassays. ...

Endothelin-1 is a 21 amino acid peptide originally isolated from porcine aortic endothelium and has recently been localized within the central nervous system. We have administered endothelin-1 in a dynamic perfusion system in order to study its possible effects on the rat hypothalamus and anterior pituitary. Tissue (hypothalami or quartered pituitaries) was placed into plastic chambers and was perfused with oxygenated Krebs-bicarbonate solution. After an interval to establish stable basal peptide ...

There are different sources of software complexity. A large set of complexity metrics can measure distinct program attributes to show different program size indicators. Nevertheless, the size of a program must be obtained from the overall program complexity based on the values of all program factors. Based on the concept that software complexity is a measurement of the resources expended through the software life cycle, and the fact that a program may be approached from three distinct perspectives, ...

In this research we analyze the extent of entrepreneurial competencies of the college students, as well as the role that play the teachers, so we can know whether the entrepreneurial attitude is encouraged among their students. The hypotheses about the competencies that students develop are contrasted by a sample of 315 students from a Mexican university. According to the results, it's noticed that there is more probability of entrepreneurial intention in the students from the Faculty of Business ...

Abstract The gray brocket deer, Mazama gouazoubiraG. Fischer, 1814, occurs in South America and presents an extensive degree of morphological and genetic variability. Previous phylogenetic research showed that the genus Mazama is polyphyletic and imposed the designation of a different genus-group name for M. gouazoubira. We aimed to review and clarify the taxonomy of M. gouazoubira through the proposal of updating the nomenclature for this taxon and by the characterization of specimens collected ...

The main motivation of this work is to obtain poly (ionic liquids) (PILs) derived from poly (4-vinyl pyridine) of different hydrophobic character containing BF4−, PF6−, (CF3SO2)2 N− and CF3SO3− as counterions. PILs were synthesized from N-alkyl quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) P-4VP+-CnBr− with different alkyl chain length, n = 2, 4, 5 and different molecular weights (60.000 and 160.000 g/mol). The systems obtained were compared with the polyelectrolyte of origin, i.e., the N-alkyl quaternized poly(4- ...

A theoretical approach based on time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) together with a polarizable continuum model for incorporating the bulk effect of the surrounding environment is used to estimate the excitation energies for the phytochromobilin chromophore of plant phytochrome. The TDDFT results reproduce well the experimental values of the absorption maxima and those of the ratio of the spectroscopic bands (Q band over the Soret band or Q/S index). Our results suggest that the phytochromobilin ...

A linear regression model with imprecise response and p real explanatory variables is analyzed. The imprecision of the response variable is functionally described by means of certain kinds of fuzzy sets, the LR fuzzy sets. The LR fuzzy random variables are introduced to model usual random experiments when the characteristic observed on each result can be described with fuzzy numbers of a particular class, determined by 3 random values: the center, the left spread and the right spread. In fact, these ...

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy is associated with a spectrum of developmental impairments known as congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). The prevalence of this syndrome varies across ZIKV endemic regions, suggesting that its occurrence could depend on cofactors. Here, we evaluate the relevance of protein malnutrition for the emergence of CZS. Epidemiological data from the ZIKV outbreak in the Americas suggest a relationship between undernutrition and cases of microcephaly. To experimentally ...

SUMMARY Type 2 diabetes mellitus is an important public health problem, with a significant impact on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and an important risk factor for chronic kidney disease. Various hypoglycemic therapies have proved to be beneficial to clinical outcomes, while others have failed to provide an improvement in cardiovascular and renal failure, only reducing blood glucose levels. Recently, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, represented by the empagliflozin, dapagliflozin, ...

Environmental disturbance generates changes in local abiotic and biotic conditions, which affect the physiological condition of the organisms. However, most of the studies dealing with environmental disturbance have focused only on species diversity, and often ignore the species’ health to evaluate habitat quality. Recently, through tools that evaluate the body condition of individuals, some studies have demonstrated that it is possible to know how species respond to environmental changes. In this ...

The physics responsible for gauge coupling unification may also induce small neutrino masses. We propose a novel gauge-mediated radiative seesaw mechanism for calculable neutrino masses. These arise from quantum corrections mediated by new $SU(3{)}_{C}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}SU(3{)}_{L}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}U(1{)}_{X}$ (3-3-1) gauge bosons and the physics driving gauge coupling unification. Gauge couplings unify for a 3-3-1 scale in the TeV range, making the model directly testable at the LHC.

An experimental study was conducted to measure the impact of “herding behaviour” inside a board of directors based on the González (2002 PhD dissertation) theoretical model, which maintains that in a board meeting composed of a CEO and two external directors (A and B), where voting is sequential (CEO → A → B) and the directors’ reputations are valuable, director B tends to copy director A’s decision. Based on the observations made through the experiment, we confirm the presence of herding behaviour.

In March 2020, following the annual International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) ratification vote on newly proposed taxa, the phylum Negarnaviricota was amended and emended. At the genus rank, 20 new genera were added, two were deleted, one was moved, and three were renamed. At the species rank, 160 species were added, four were deleted, ten were moved and renamed, and 30 species were renamed. This article presents the updated taxonomy of Negarnaviricota as now accepted by the ICTV.

Abstract Caveolin-1 (CAV1) enhanced migration, invasion, and metastasis of cancer cells is inhibited by co-expression of the glycoprotein E-cadherin. Although the two proteins form a multiprotein complex that includes β-catenin, it remained unclear how this would contribute to blocking the metastasis promoting function of CAV1. Here, we characterized by mass spectrometry the protein composition of CAV1 immunoprecipitates from B16F10 murine melanoma cells expressing or not E-cadherin. The novel protein ...
