The evaluation soil quality after bioremediation processes solely on chemical data does not include the effects of toxic substances in organisms. Thus, ecotoxicological assays with seeds are applied to assess the effect of toxic substances in organisms according to their germination sensitivity. The objective of this study was to evaluate a contaminated soil with diesel, biodiesel and waste lubricat oil in ecotoxicological bioassays using seeds of Cucumis sativus (cucumber), Brassica oleracea (kale) ...

The inhibition of root and hypocotyl elongation may reflect toxic substances in low concentrations, which are not sufficient to prevent germination, but may delay or inhibit root and hypocotyl growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate root and hypocotyl growth inhibition in Cucumis sativus, Brassica oleracea and Barbarea verna as a parameter for assessing soils toxicity when contaminated with diesel, lubricant oil and biodiesel. Thus, potential toxicity of contaminants was evaluated according ...

Electrochemically assisted photocatalysis (by electronic drainage) is a highly promising method for disinfection of water. In this research, the efficiency of photolytic oxidation using UV-A radiation and electrochemically assisted photocatalysis (with electric potential of 1.5 V) was studied by using electrodes prepared by thermal treatment and doped with silver, for inactivation of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The Chick-Watson microorganism inactivation model was applied and the electrical ...

The aim of this work was to compare different toxicity levels of lubricant oils. The tests were performed using the earthworm (Eisenia andrei), arugula seeds (Eruca sativa) and lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa), with three types of contaminants (mineral lubricant oil, synthetic lubricant oil and used lubricant oil) for various biodegradation periods in the soil. The toxicity tests indirectly measured the biodegradation of the contaminants. The samples were analyzed at t0, t60, t120 and t180 days of biodegradation. ...

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the heterogeneity and diversity of algae according to an aquatic environment polluted by Remazol Red Brilliant dye. Methodology followed Winogradsky columns technique, which describes a microecosystem in a glass container. Two columns were prepared: one control and another with Remazol Red Brilliant dye simulating a contaminated environment. The experiment was under illumination to provide light energy to photosynthetic organisms and alteration in two columns ...

Tebuthiuron is often used to control weed growth in sugarcane cultures. This herbicide is highly toxic and can persist in soil for up to 2 years according to its degradation half-life. Hence, its residual effect is highly hazardous for the environment and local habitants via leaching, surface runoff. Screening out of species of green manure as potential phytoremediators for tebuthiuron in soil, with and with no vinasse, accordingly is the scientific point of this study. Green manure species selected ...

Abstract Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are one of the most widely used nanoparticulate materials due to their antimicrobial properties, but their main mechanism of action (MOA) has not been fully elucidated. This study characterized ZnO NPs by using X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Antimicrobial activity of ZnO NPs against the clinically relevant bacteria Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and the Gram-positive model Bacillus subtilis ...

The aim of this work was to study the biodegradation of different types of automotive lubricant oils adapted to the aqueous medium using a base inoculum and an aqueous inoculum. Four treatments were carried out in two consecutive and similar experiments: T1 (control); T2 (half-synthetic oil); T3 (mineral oil); T4 (used oil). The results showed the following decreasing order of CO2 production in the Bartha and Pramer respirometers: T4 > T2 > T3 > T1. Thus, the used lubricant oil showed with highest biodegradability, ...

Vegetable oils and their derivatives, like biodiesel, are used extensively throughout the world, thus posing an environmental risk when disposed. Toxicity testing using test organisms shows how these residues affect ecosystems. Toxicity tests using earthworms (Eisenia foetida) are widespread because they are a practical resource for analyzing terrestrial organisms. For phytotoxicological analysis, we used seeds of arugula (Eruca sativa) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa) to analyze the germination of seeds ...

Copper compounds have been intentionally introduced into water bodies as aquatic plant herbicides, algicides and molluscicides. Copper-based fertilizers and fungicides have been widely used in agriculture as well. Despite the fact that copper is an essential element for all biota, elevated concentrations of this metal have been shown to affect a variety of aquatic organisms. Nonetheless, comparative studies on the susceptibility of different freshwater species to copper compounds have seldom been ...

In the present study, ChE from Oreochromis niloticus, Piaractus mesopotamicus, Leporinus macrocephalus, and Prochilodus lineatus was biochemically characterized by specific substrates and inhibitors. Moreover, muscle tissue ChE sensitivity to the organophosphate pesticide methyl-paraoxon ...

Problem-based learning (PBL) has been systematized for over forty years. However, there is still a lack of studies that seek to visualize the evolution of scientific literature on the subject. This paper seeks to fill this gap through the development of a bibliometric analysis by carrying out a data search on the Web of Science? database and subsequently transferring the acquired data for treatment to the VantagePoint? software package. The data indicate that research on PBL shows a strong progression ...

Abstract There is a long-term concern that the cultivation of biofuel feedstocks could have negative impacts on communities involved in, or adjacent to, such projects. In southern Africa, the acquisition and allocation of large blocks of land for biofuel feedstock production has been especially contentious. The present study investigates the local multi-dimensional poverty effects of growing biofuel crops using the Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative's Multidimensional Poverty Index. It ...

The use of fluoride based foams increases the effectiveness of fire-fighting operations, but they are also accompanied by major drawbacks regarding environmental safety of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). The main concern with PFCs release is due to their well-known persistence and bioaccumulative potential, as they have been detected in many environmental samples. There is a significant knowledge gap on PFC toxicity to plants, even though such data could be useful towards bioremediation procedures. ...

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a protagonist of constructivism widely used successfully in higher education. PBL is a learner-centered instructional and curricular approach that can use real problems for the development of the teaching and learning process. Therefore, ...

Due to large amounts of wastewater generated by textile industry, studies on degradation and subsequent impact of these effluents are needed when they are released into water bodies. Since reactive dyes present higher degradation when treated by physical and chemical processes, a photoelectrolytic process was used.
