Mesoscale eddies are present everywhere in the ocean and partly determine the mean state of the circulation and ecosystem. The current feedback on the surface wind stress modulates the air-sea transfer of momentum by providing a sink of mesoscale eddy energy as an atmospheric source. Using nine years of satellite measurements of surface stress and geostrophic currents over the global ocean, we confirm that the current-induced surface stress curl is linearly related to the current vorticity. The Current FeedBack (CFB) to the atmosphere simply represents the influence of the surface oceanic currents on near-surface wind and surface stress. As the CFB has a significant influence on the oceanic circulation, it is crucial to implement it properly in a coupled ocean–atmosphere model. In this study, we first detail the modifications to be implemented into atmospheric models to account for the CFB. In the computation of air–sea fluxes, the relative winds, i.e., the difference between the near- ...

Abstract In this study, uncoupled and coupled ocean–atmosphere simulations are carried out for the California Upwelling System to assess the dynamic ocean–atmosphere interactions, namely, the ocean surface current feedback to the atmosphere. The authors show the current feedback, by modulating the energy transfer from the atmosphere to the ocean, controls the oceanic eddy kinetic energy (EKE). For the first time, it is demonstrated that the current feedback has an effect on the surface stress and ...

Lionel Renault, Patrick Marchesiello,

Abstract Oceanic tides lead to some of the largest currents of the world ocean and have important implications for oceanic circulation. In the last decade, the feedback effect of surface currents on the overlying winds has been shown to strongly regulate the ocean circulation. Here we present evidence, using coupled high-resolution ocean-atmosphere simulations and in situ measurements, that ocean tides can drag the atmosphere above. The current-induced tidal winds expand across the atmospheric boundary ...

Two different cases of wake transitions are identified with two car models in real flow condition, a hatchback vehicle (Renault Mégane) and a light van (Renault Kangoo). Their wakes are studied thanks to aerodynamic forces and pressure distributions at the car's base. For the hatchback car, a transition yawing angle of ±8.6° at which a bistable behavior occurs is identified. It originates from a massive intermittent reattachment occurring simultaneously on the whole slanted rear window. The reattachment ...

Abstract Sea surface temperature (SST) is characterized by abundant warm and cold structures that influence the overlying atmospheric boundary layer dynamics through two different mechanisms. First, turbulence and large eddies in the lower troposphere are affected by atmospheric stability, which can be modified by local SST, resulting in enhanced vertical mixing and larger surface winds over warmer waters. Second, the thermodynamic adjustment of air density to the underlying SST structures and the ...

Abstract The Santa Barbara Channel is one of the most productive regions of the California Current System. Yet, the physical processes that sustain this high productivity remain unclear. We use a high‐resolution physical‐biogeochemical model to show that submesoscale eddies generated by islands are energized by orographic effects on the wind, with significant impacts on nutrient, carbon, and oxygen cycles. These eddies are modulated by two co‐occurring air‐sea‐land interactions: transfer of wind ...

Internal waves contain a large amount of energy in the ocean and are an important source of turbulent mixing. Ocean mixing is relevant for climate because it drives vertical transport of water, heat, carbon and other tracers. Understanding the life cycle of internal waves, from generation to dissipation, is therefore important for improving the representation of ocean mixing in climate models. Here, we provide evidence from a regional realistic numerical simulation in the northeastern Pacific that ...

Abstract. Wind work at the air-sea interface is the transfer of kinetic energy between the ocean and the atmosphere and, as such, is an important part of the ocean-atmosphere coupled system. Wind work is defined as the scalar product of ocean wind stress and surface current, with each of these two variables spanning, in this study, a broad range of spatial and temporal scales, from 10 km to more than 3000 km and hours to months. These characteristics emphasize wind work's multiscale nature. In the ...
