Lifelong substance abuse is often initiated during adolescence; yet, most pre-clinical research in this area has been conducted in adult animals. Substantial evidence exists that the brain development that continues throughout adolescence may result in pharmacological responses that differ in a crucial manner from those of adults. The goal of this study was to evaluate age differences in motor activity following acute and repeated administration of drugs that are commonly abused by adolescents, ...

Abstract This paper presents an investigation of the transport and fate of hydrogen gas through compacted bentonite buffer. Various geochemical reactions that may occur in the multiphase and multicomponent system of the unsaturated bentonite buffer are considered. A reactive gas transport model, developed within an established coupled thermal, hydraulic, chemical and mechanical (THCM) framework, is presented. The reactive transport module of the model considers the transport of multicomponent chemicals ...

Abstract At the post-closure stage of a geological disposal facility for higher activity radioactive waste several species of gas are likely to be generated in the near-field environment. These could alter the sealing and chemical properties of the bentonite buffer and the local geochemical environment significantly. The authors' attempt to simulate multicomponent gas flow through variably saturated porous media is presented. Governing equations have been developed for a reactive gas-flow model ...

Historical epidemiological perspectives from past pandemics and recent neurobiological evidence link infections and psychoses, leading to concerns that COVID-19 will present a significant risk for the development of psychosis. But are these concerns justified, or mere sensationalism? In this article we review the historical associations between viral infection and the immune system more broadly in the development of psychosis, before critically evaluating the current evidence pertaining to SARS- ...

Prospective localization of parathyroid adenomas was attempted in 16 patients with hyperparathyroidism prior to surgery. All patients had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using T1-weighted spin-echo (SE) sequences and a fat-suppression sequence, the short-tau inversion recovery (STIR) sequence. Correlation with the results of surgery yielded an overall sensitivity of 71% and a specificity of 94%. Performance was good in patients with previous surgery and with ectopic tumours. We believe that fat-suppression ...

The inventory of high-level radioactive waste in the UK is likely to be disposed of in a geological disposal facility, which will generate gases due to processes such as anoxic metal corrosion and water radiolysis. Such gases have the potential to migrate through the repository system and may be detrimental to the engineered barrier system by damaging the physical fabric of the buffer material through the build-up of pressure. An investigation into the migration of gases and the ranges of gas pressures ...

Heparin infusion may cause heparin resistance and may affect monitoring by measurement of the activated coagulation time (ACT), making the assessment of anticoagulation difficult, with the risk of over- or undertreatment, especially during cardiac surgery. We studied two groups of patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB): patients on heparin infusions (group H) and heparin-naive controls (group C). All patients received heparin 300 IU kg−1 before CPB and a further dose of 5000 IU if the ACT ...
