A Gram-stain-negative strain, A60T, isolated from a water well sample in Portugal, was characterized phenotypically, genotypically and phylogenetically. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain A60T belonged to the genus Citrobacter, and recN gene phylogeny revealed one strongly supported clade encompassing strain A60T and 13 other strains from public databases, distinct from currently recognized species of the genus Citrobacter. Furthermore, multilocus sequence ...

Almost all patients with Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) exhibit a CGG repeat expansion (full mutation) in the Fragile Mental Retardation 1 gene (FMR1). Here, the authors report five unrelated males with FXS harboring a somatic full mutation/deletion mosaicism.Mutational profiles were only elucidated by using a combination of molecular approaches (CGG-based PCR, Sanger sequencing, MS-MLPA, Southern blot and mPCR).Four patients exhibited small deletions encompassing the CGG repeats tract and flanking regions, ...

Introduction: Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that is more prevalent in children (10-20% of the world's population) than in adults. As its etiology is multifactorial, it is important to know the most frequent oral manifestations in atopic dermatitis patients. Methodology: In the last decades, the correlation between atopic dermatitis and conditions and/or changes in the oral cavity has been demonstrated by several studies. The objective of this paper was to describe, through ...

Mutations in the Jumonji AT-rich interactive domain 1C (JARID1C/SMCX/KDM5C) gene, located at Xp11.22, are emerging as frequent causes of X-linked intellectual disability (XLID). KDM5C encodes for a member of an ARID protein family that harbors conserved DNA-binding motifs and acts as a histone H3 lysine 4 demethylase, suggesting a potential role in epigenetic regulation during development, cell growth and differentiation. In this study, we describe clinical and genetic findings of a Brazilian family ...

Recently, we defined a minimal overlapping region for causal Xp11.22 copy number gains in males with intellectual disability (ID), and identified HECT, UBA and WWE domain-containing protein-1 (HUWE1) as the primary dosage-sensitive gene, whose overexpression leads to ID. In the present study, we used this minimal interval to search for HUWE1 copy number variations by quantitative polymerase chain reaction in a large cohort of Brazilian males with idiopathic ID. We detected two unrelated sporadic individuals ...

Glutamate uptake is a process mediated by sodium-dependent glutamate transporters, preventing glutamate spillover from the synapse. Typically, astrocytes express higher amounts of glutamate transporters, thus being responsible for most of the glutamate uptake; nevertheless, neurons can also express these transporters, albeit in smaller concentrations. When not regulated, glutamate uptake can lead to neuronal death. Indeed, the majority of the studies regarding glutamate transporters have focused ...

Abstract Acute intoxication‐type inborn errors of metabolism (IT‐IEM) such as urea cycle disorders and non‐acute IT‐IEM such as phenylketonuria have a major impact on paediatric patients' life. Patients have to adhere to a strict diet but may face neurocognitive impairment and – in acute diseases – metabolic decompensations nevertheless. Research on the subjective burden of IT‐IEM remains sparse. Studies with appropriate sample sizes are needed to make valid statements about health‐related quality of ...
