Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common surgical treatment when significant joint changes and pain are present after acetabular fracture. Few series have been reported in the literature with cemented and uncemented acetabular components. The aim of this study was to analyze the long-term results of cementless acetabular components inserted in acetabula that had been altered with previous fracture and to compare these results to those of routine THA.Twenty-four uncemented total hip arthroplasties ...

Controversy continues regarding whether the posterior cruciate ligament should be retained or removed during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedure. The objective was to compare the clinical outcomes with a minimum follow-up of 10 years between patients who received contemporary cruciate-retaining or posterior-stabilized primary TKA.Case-control study of 268 patients who underwent cruciate-retaining TKA vs 211 to posterior-stabilized design, with the same arthroplasty system, and a minimum follow- ...

A prospective cohort of 33 nonagenarians with hemiartroplasty for femoral neck fracture was matched with 33 patients aged between 70 and 89, using preoperative and postoperative data, and the following were studied; epidemiological data, physical dependence, and SF-12 and WOMAC questionnaires. The mortality rate at one year was 24.2%, influenced by the presence of 3 or more comorbidities, dementia, and previous dependence. The perioperative period was the most vulnerable time, and in some cases ...

Biologicals are crucial targeted therapeutic agents in oncological, immunological, and inflammatory diseases, and their use in clinical practice is broadening. In recent years, the spread of Personalized Precision Medicine has facilitated a proliferation of new treatment options, especially biologicals. Consequently, biologicals are now among the drugs that most frequently cause hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs). Patients can develop HSRs to these agents during the first-lifetime exposure or after ...

This paper aims at analysing the impacts of interdependencies between electricity and natural gas systems in terms of security of energy supply. When analysing both systems several interdependencies can be observed, however, the most significant interdependencies are as follows: (1) gas dependency of gas fired power plants in electricity system and (2) electric dependency of electric-driven compressors in gas system. Since both systems depend on each other, it is of major interest from an energy security ...

Abstract Background There is a growing concern that global climate change will affect the potential for pathogen transmission by insect species that are vectors of human diseases. One of these species is the former European malaria vector, Anopheles atroparvus . Levels of population differentiation of An. atroparvus from southern Europe were characterized as a first attempt to elucidate patterns of population structure of this former malaria vector. Results are discussed in light of a hypothetical ...

Carbonate and bicarbonate adsorption on Pt(111) electrodes from CO2-saturated acidic solutions is investigated by cyclic voltammetry and Fourier transform infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (FT-IRRAS). Spectroscopic results show carbonate and bicarbonate adsorption even at pH = 1, where bulk concentration of these anions is negligible. Moreover, analysis of the potential dependence of band intensities corresponding to adsorbed carbonate and bicarbonate reveals an effect of the electrode potential ...

Chemotherapeutic drugs have been widely used in the treatment of cancer disease for about 70 years. The development of new treatments has not hindered their use, and oncologists still prescribe them routinely, alone or in combination with other antineoplastic agents. However, all chemotherapeutic agents can induce hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs), with different incidences depending on the culprit drug. These reactions are the third leading cause of fatal drug-induced anaphylaxis in the United States. ...

We report the molecular characterization of an ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS)-induced mutation that causes albinism and lethality at the seedling stage in Arabidopsis thaliana. We identified the mutation using a mapping-by-sequencing approach that uses Fisher’s exact tests to detect changes in allele frequencies among the seedlings of an F2 mapping population, which had been pooled according to their phenotypes (wild-type or mutant). After purifying genomic DNA from the plants of both pools, the two ...

The 2015 Lancet Commission on global surgery identified surgery and anaesthesia as indispensable parts of holistic health-care systems. However, COVID-19 exposed the fragility of planned surgical services around the world, which have also been neglected in pandemic recovery planning. SummaryBackgroundThe clinical presentation of COVID-19 in patients admitted to hospital is heterogeneous. We aimed to determine whether clinical phenotypes of patients with COVID-19 can be derived from clinical data, to assess the reproducibility of these phenotypes and correlation with prognosis, and to derive and validate a simplified probabilistic model for phenotype assignment. Phenotype identification was not primarily intended as a predictive tool for mortality.MethodsIn this study, we used ...

Background Biliary tract cancers, which arise from the intrahepatic or extrahepatic bile ducts and the gallbladder, generally have a poor prognosis and are rising in incidence worldwide. The standard-of-care treatment for advanced biliary tract cancer is chemotherapy with gemcitabine and cisplatin. Because most biliary tract cancers have an immune-suppressed microenvironment, immune checkpoint inhibitor monotherapy is associated with a low objective response rate. We aimed to assess whether adding ...
