Antimicrobial resistance is a quintessential One Health issue, among the most serious 21st century global threats to human health. Seabirds may act as sentinels of natural and anthropogenic changes in the marine ecosystem health, including pollution by antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). We used real time PCR to identify and quantify 22 plasmid-mediated ARGs in the gastrointestinal microbiome of six wild seabird species, comparing an anthropized (Fernando de Noronha Archipelago - FNA) and a pristine ...

Several constituents of essential oils have been shown to be active against pathogens such as bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. This study demonstrated the in vitro action of ten compounds present in essential oils against Leishmania amazonensis promastigotes. With the exception of p-cymene, all evaluated compounds presented leishmanicidal activity, exhibiting IC50 between 25.4 and 568.1 μg mL-1. Compounds with the best leishmanicidal activity presented a phenolic moiety (IC50 between 25.4 and 82.9 ...

Background Higher levels of inflammatory biomarkers are associated with an increased risk of perioperative atrial fibrillation and myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery (MINS). Colchicine is an anti-inflammatory drug that might reduce the incidence of these complications. Methods COP-AF was a randomised trial conducted at 45 sites in 11 countries. Patients aged 55 years or older and undergoing major non-cardiac thoracic surgery were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive oral colchicine 0·5 mg twice ...

The objective was to evaluate the performance, carcass and meat quality of 40 lambs classified by RFI (residual feed intake) and RIG (residual intake and gain). Dry matter intake (DMI) was recorded to calculate the RFI and RIG, classified as efficient, moderately or inefficient. After the confinement period, they were slaughtered and the carcass and meat quality were determined. The efficient animals had DMI scores of 0.700 RFI and 0.400 kg/d RIG, lower than the inefficient ones with similar weight ...

Including environmental covariates, when available, can be a valuable strategy for achieving higher soil predictive performance, but it is still unknown whether environmental data should be used either as covariates, combined with Vis-NIR spectra, to predict soil organic carbon (SOC) or as criteria to stratify a soil spectral library (SSL). We hypothesized that the performance of Vis-NIR spectroscopy in predicting SOC could be improved by the inclusion of auxiliary environmental data as covariates ...

Abstract Granite and/or gneiss inselbergs are excellent examples of geomorphologically stable island habitats, considered as old, climatically buffered, infertile landscapes (OCBILs). However, unlike oceanic islands, their underlying drivers of diversity patterns remain to be investigated. Here, we studied 24 inselbergs in south-eastern Brazil, aiming to understand the role of landscape variables and environmental conditions in the assembly of the characteristic extremophilic mat vegetation communities. ...

More accurate models for the prediction of soil organic carbon (SOC) by visible-near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy remains a challenging task, especially when the soil spectral libraries (SSL) is composed of soils with a high pedological variation. One proposition to increase the models accuracy is to reduce the SSL variance, which can be achieved by stratifying the library into sub-libraries. Thus, the main objective of this study was to evaluate whether the stratification of a SSL by environmental, ...

The MEDLINE, Elsevier, Cochrane, LILACS, SciELO, and OpenGrey databases were used. For the qualitative analysis, the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used. ...

Considering the hypothesis that the predictive capacity of models is tied to soil characteristics, the stratification of a spectral library into groups is a strategy to improve the accuracy of the predictions. Thus, the objective of this study was to i) characterize and identify differences among spectra obtained for subtropical soils samples, ii) evaluate different pre-processing techniques and multivariate methods to propose SOC prediction models from the spectral data and iii) evaluate the performance ...

Human ascariasis has a global and cosmopolitan distribution, and has been characterized as the most prevalent neglected tropical disease worldwide. The development of a preventive vaccine is highly desirable to complement current measures required for this parasitic infection control and to reduce chronic childhood morbidities. In the present study, we describe the mechanism of protection elicited by a preventive vaccine against ascariasis. Vaccine efficacy was evaluated after immunization with ...

The use of lambs from crossing of local with specialized sheep breeds for meat production may lead to higher meat deposition and a smaller fat amount in the carcass, with a more adequate nutritional profile for human consumption. This study investigated the performance, carcass and meat characteristics of lambs from the Morada Nova and Santa Inês locally adapted hair breeds and crosses between Dorper × Morada Nova and Dorper × Santa Inês slaughtered at approximately 35 kg. Morada Nova lambs showed lower ( ...

Santa Inês (SI) and Morada Nova (MN) are hair breeds with potential for the production of lambs for early slaughter. However, they tend to show low carcass quality and meat production. On the other hand, this could be overcome by crossing these sheep with highly productive breeds. This study aimed to evaluate parasitic infection as well as reproductive and productive performance in 51 MN ewes with an average weight 33.1 ± 4.98 kg and 52 SI ewes averaging 51.8 ± 7.07 kg, mated with rams of their own breed ...

In this work xanthan–nanohydroxyapatite (XnHAp) and its equivalent strontium substituted (XnHApSr) were synthesized by the precipitation of nanohydroxyapatite in xanthan aqueous solution, characterized and compared to conventional hydroxyapatite particles (HAp). XnHAp and XnHApSr were less crystalline than HAp, as revealed by X-ray diffraction. Xanthan chains enriched the surface of XnHAp and XnHApSr particles, increasing the zeta potential values from −(7 ± 1) mV, determined for HAp, to −(17 ± 3) mV and −(25 ± ...

Bovine anaplasmosis is a disease caused by the intraerythrocytic rickettsia Anaplasma marginale. Surface proteins (MSPs) of A. marginale are important in the interaction of the pathogen with the host and constitute potential vaccine targets against this pathogen. Currently, there is no commercial inactivated vaccine against bovine anaplasmosis that can generate a protective immune response that effectively prevents the development of clinical disease. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ...

Background Polymorphisms within the MTHFR (rs2274976) and MTHFD1 (rs2236225) genes were previously associated with maternal susceptibility for having an offspring with nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) in the Brazilian population. Studies related to the immunobiological aspects of an Ascaris spp. infection are still scarce, especially those that aim to elucidate the early events of the immune response.
