New ruthenium methyl-cyclopentadienyl compounds bearing bipyridine derivatives with the general formula [Ru(η5-MeCp)(PPh3)(4,4'-R-2,2'-bpy)]+ (Ru1, R = H; Ru2, R = CH3; and Ru3, R = CH2OH) have been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic and analytical techniques. Ru1 crystallized in the monoclinic P21/ c, Ru2 in the triclinic P1̅, and Ru3 in the monoclinic P21/ n space group. In all molecular structures, the ruthenium center adopts a "piano stool" distribution. Density functional theory calculations ...

In the present study, we characterized the in vitro modulation of NETs (neutrophil extracellular traps) induced in human neutrophils by the opportunistic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans, evaluating the participation of capsular polysaccharides glucuronoxylomanan (GXM) and glucuronoxylomannogalactan (GXMGal) in this phenomenon. The mutant acapsular strain CAP67 and the capsular polysaccharide GXMGal induced NET production. In contrast, the wild-type strain and the major polysaccharide GXM did not induce ...

This paper aims to test the influence of route of infection (intravitreal and instillation) on the course of ocular toxoplasmosis in mice, using the Toxoplasma gondii Me-49 strain. All mice inoculated intravitreally or by instillation presented the same pattern of infection. Using either route, parasites were observed in the retinal vessel with the formation of a glial reaction in the inner plexiforme layer and discontinuity of the pigmented epithelium of the retina 7 days after infection. However, ...

Chagas disease is a neglected illness caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and its treatment is done only with two drugs, nifurtimox and benznidazole. However, both drugs are ineffective in the chronic phase, in addition to causing serious side effects. This context of therapeutic limitation justifies the continuous research for alternative drugs. Here, we study the in vitro trypanocidal effects of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug nimesulide, a molecule that has in its chemical structure a toxicophoric ...

Abstract Background Culex pipiens L. is the most widespread mosquito vector in temperate regions. This species consists of two forms, denoted molestus and pipiens, that exhibit important behavioural and physiological differences. The evolutionary relationships and taxonomic status of these forms remain unclear. In northern European latitudes molestus and pipiens populations occupy different habitats (underground vs . aboveground), a separation that most likely promotes genetic isolation between forms. ...

Three new compounds have been synthesized and completely characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques. The new bipyridine-perfluorinated ligand L1 and the new organometallic complex [Ru(η5-MeCp)(PPh3)2Cl] (Ru1) crystalize in the centrosymmetric triclinic space group P1¯. Analysis of the phenotypic effects induced by both organometallic complexes Ru1 and [Ru(η5-MeCp)(PPh3)(L1)][CF3SO3] (Ru2), on human colorectal cancer cells (SW480 and RKO) survival, showed that Ru2 has a potent anti-proliferative ...

Probabilistic Inductive Logic Programming (PILP) systems extend ILP by allowing the world to be represented using probabilistic facts and rules, and by learning probabilistic theories that can be used to make predictions. However, such systems can be inefficient both due to the large search space inherited from the ILP algorithm and to the probabilistic evaluation needed whenever a new candidate theory is generated. To address the latter issue, this work introduces probability estimators aimed at ...

Wine is widely consumed throughout the world and represents a significant financial market, but production faces increasing challenges. While consumers progressively value more complex flavor profiles, regional authenticity, and decreased use of additives, winemakers strive for consistency among climate change, characterized by rising environmental temperatures and sun burn events.
