To describe the sociodemographic characteristics of and the health care resources used to treat patients aged 65 years or older who come to hospital emergency departments (EDs) in Spain, according to age groups. We studied the phase-1 data for the EDEN cohort (Emergency Department and Elder Needs). Forty Spanish EDs collected data on all patients aged 65 years or older who were treated on the first 7 days in April 2019. We registered information on 6 sociodemographic and 5 function variables for all ...

The use of nanoparticles as drug delivery systems has increased in importance in the last decades. Despite the disadvantages of difficulty swallowing, gastric irritation, low solubility, and poor bioavailability, oral administration stands out as the most widely used route for therapeutic treatments, though it may not always be the most effective route. The effect of the first hepatic pass is one of the primary challenges that drugs must overcome to carry out their therapeutic effect. For these ...

This is the first study dealing with removal of the pharmaceutical substances in municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTPs) from Peru and the impact of these compounds in surface waters receiving treated wastewater. To this aim, samples from MWWTP of Lima (Peruvian Coast), MWWTP of Cusco, Puno and Juliaca (Peruvian Highlands), as well surface water (confluence of Torococha and Coata rivers in Juliaca) were analyzed. A total of 38 target pharmaceuticals were included in this study and were determined ...

Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most highly consumed petroleum-based polymers and its accumulation as waste causes environmental pollution. In this sense, the use of microorganisms and their enzymes represents the most ecofriendly and effective decontamination approach. In this work, molecular docking simulation for catalytic enzyme degradation of PE was carried out using individual enzymes: laccase (Lac), manganese peroxidase (MnP), lignin peroxidase (LiP) and unspecific peroxygenase (UnP). PE-binding ...

A comprehensive characterization of the afferent connections of the subthalamic nucleus of Luys (STN) is a necessary step in the unraveling of extrapyramidal mechanisms. In the present study, the STN afferents in the rat were systematically investigated with the aid of retrograde and anterograde horseradish peroxidase tracer techniques. The results indicate that, besides a massive input from the dorsal pallidum, the STN receives substantial projections from several districts of the cerebral cortex ( ...

Previous physiological studies have shown that neurons in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) respond to peripheral somatosensory stimulation. In an attempt to identify anatomical pathways that could mediate such responses, the possible existence of direct projections from somatosensory central territories to the STN was investigated in the rat with the aid of retrograde and anterograde horseradish peroxidase tracer techniques. Our main findings indicate the existence of a hitherto undescribed and relatively ...
