Migration is transformative both for those who move and for the places and economies of source and destination. The global stock of migrants, depending on definition, is approximately 750 million people: to assume that the world is static and that migration is a problem to be managed is inaccurate. Since migration is a major driving force of planetary and population health, we argue that it must be more directly incorporated into planning for sustainable development, with a focus on the extent and ...

John Neville Keynes, David Ricardo, E. C. K. Gonner,

The same rule which regulates the relative value of commodities in one country does not regulate the relative value of the commodities exchanged between two or more countries.Under a system of perfectly free commerce, each country naturally devotes its capital and labor to such employments as are most beneficial to each. This pursuit of individual advantage is admirably connected with the universal good of the whole. By stimulating industry, by rewarding ingenuity, and by using most efficaciously ...

Ricardo Avena, Marc Mitchell, Richard F. Neville, Anton N. Sidawy,

Peripheral vascular disease involving the infragenicular arterial tree is common in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Accelerated proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) plays an important role in the development of atherosclerosis. Insulin and glucose stimulate VSMC proliferation and are elevated in patients with non-insulin-dependent DM. We have previously described the mitogenic effect of insulin on VSMCs in vitro; the effects of insulin and glucose separately and in combination ...

Abstract Additive manufacturing (AM) of medical devices such as orthopedic implants and hearing aids is highly attractive because of the potential of AM to match the complex form and mechanics of individual human bodies. Externally worn and implantable tissue‐support devices, such as ankle or knee braces, and hernia repair mesh, offer a new opportunity for AM to mimic tissue‐like mechanics and improve both patient outcomes and comfort. Here, it is demonstrated how explicit programming of the toolpath ...

Most meningiomas are classified as World Health Organization (WHO) grade I. Adjuvant radiation therapy (RT) is commonly recommended for subtotal resections with documented progressive regrowth of lesions with venous sinus involvement. We investigated if recurrence of WHO grade I meningiomas was influenced by adjuvant RT. From 2000 to 2014, patients with grade I meningiomas with at least one venous sinus involvement and at least 4 years of follow-up were included. Demographics, venous sinus involvement, ...

Purpose: Vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation is an early event in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Insulin and glucose are known to stimulate the growth of VSMC. Cell membrane receptors play an important role in the proliferation of VSMC in response to growth factors. Insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) have demonstrated a cross reactivity for receptor binding and function. By using monoclonal antibodies directed against insulin (IRA) and IGF-1 (IGF-1RA) receptors, we attempt ...
