The ‘Bravo de Esmolfe’ apple (BE) is rich in antioxidants and represents one of the most important traditional cultivars in Portugal. A large amount of non-compliant BE, with no market value, it is generated every year. Thus, an effort to find value-added solutions is of utmost importance. For the first time, green extraction (microwave-assisted-extraction (MAE) and ultrasound-assisted-extraction (UAE)) were compared against conventional extraction (with (CET) and without temperature (CE)) to select the ...

7-Hydroxycoumarin (umbelliferone, 1), the main metabolite of coumarin, has been reported to produce potent antinociceptive effects in animal models of pain. However, the biochemical events involved in antinociception mediated by 1 are currently not well understood. In the present study, the mechanisms by which 1 exerts its pharmacological actions were investigated. Acute pretreatment of mice with 1 produced a long-lasting antinociceptive effect against complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced hyperalgesia. ...

Atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and epithelial dysplasia of the stomach are common and are associated with an increased risk for gastric cancer. In the absence of guidelines, there is wide disparity in the management of patients with these premalignant conditions. There is a strong demand for plant-based milk substitutes, often low in protein content (<1.5% w/v). Protein-rich pulse seeds and the right processing technologies make it possible to make relevant choices. The major objective of this study was to assess the impact of processing on the nutritional characteristics of beverages with a high impact on health, in particular on digestibility and specific bioactivities. The results suggest that pulse beverages are as high in protein content (3.24% w/v for ...

Learning management systems are used as a support tool in the process of knowledge sharing. Teachers add the material related to the domain of knowledge and also elaborate pedagogical mediation activities for the students. This process, in general, results in a learning environment that presents the same content for all participants, not taking into account the differences that exist between each of them, both in performance and behavior in the environment. The purpose of this work is to show an ...

Analysis and interpretation of heart sounds (HSs) can be seriously hindered by noise contamination when signals are acquired in noncontrolled environments. Signal processing methodologies are then required in order to robustly analyse HSs collected in different recording settings. Some works already address this problem using complex calculus that are usually dependent on the accurate segmentation of the signals. As such, the aim of the present study is the development of a low-complex automatic ...

EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer) rubber insulators were subjected to tracking resistance tests. Gases evolved in these tests were collected and analyzed by gas chromatography and Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometry. Gases obtained by pyrolysis of this rubber compound (at 400, 600, 800, 1000 degrees C) were also collected and analyzed. Comparison of the gaseous mixtures obtained in both cases revealed that they are similar: CO, CO/sub 2/ ethene, and methane are their major components. ...

Background Combinatorial phage display has been used in the last 20 years in the identification of protein-ligands and protein-protein interactions, uncovering relevant molecular recognition events. Rate-limiting steps of combinatorial phage display library selection are (i) the counting of transducing units and (ii) the sequencing of the encoded displayed ligands. Here, we adapted emerging genomic technologies to minimize such challenges. Methodology/Principal Findings We gained efficiency by applying ...

Abstract: Infection with Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV‐1) typically causes lesions of the mouth, face, skin, esophagus, or brain. Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV‐2) usually causes infections of the genitals, rectum, skin, hands, or meninges. The herpes viruses are a major cause of blindness from keratitis. The usual drugs used for herpes are Vidarabine, Acyclovir, Penciclovir and Ganciclovir; they are associated with several complications. The aim of this study was to investigate if a formulation ...

J Oral Pathol Med (2012) 41 : 80–85 Background: Toll‐like receptors (TLR) are membrane proteins that recognize conserved molecules derived from bacterial, viral, fungal or host tissues. They are responsible for promoting the production of cytokines and chemokines, increasing the expression of costimulatory molecules and influencing the T Helper response (Th) toward either a Th1 or Th2 profile, thereby modulating the regulatory T cell response and controlling the integrity of the epithelial barrier. We investigate the effect of superconducting and excitonic interactions, as well as their competition, on Dirac electrons on a bipartite planar lattice. It is shown that, at half-filling, Cooper pairs and excitons coexist if the superconducting and excitonic coupling parameters are equal and above a threshold corresponding to a quantum critical point. In the case where only the excitonic interaction is present, we obtain a critical chemical potential, as a function of the interaction strength. Conversely, ...

The thyroid hormone receptor (TR) D-domain links the ligand-binding domain (LBD, EF-domain) to the DNA-binding domain (DBD, C-domain), but its structure, and even its existence as a functional unit, are controversial. The D domain is poorly conserved throughout the nuclear receptor family and was originally proposed to comprise an unfolded hinge that facilitates rotation between the LBD and the DBD. Previous TR LBD structures, however, have indicated that the true unstructured region is three to six ...
