Infection by human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) occurs in lymphocytes, which travel throughout the body, thus affecting several target organs and causing varied clinical outcomes, particularly in populations that are underserved and do not have access to healthcare. However, the mechanism of pathogenesis is not yet fully understood. The TAX and HTLV-1 basic leucine zipper factor (HBZ) proteins maintain viral persistence and affect pathogenesis through cell proliferation and immune and ...

This paper reports the development of a new approach for total phenol distillation using a focussed microwave oven, aiming its determination in petroleum refinery effluents and sour waters. In the procedure, 25 ml of sample is distilled during 15 min at 210 W power. At these conditions, recoveries as high as 95% are obtained, making possible the determination of total phenol in the samples without any interference and in a time significantly lower than that required by the reference method. In the ...

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) exhibit unique properties that have made them a very attractive material for application in biological assays. Given the potentially interesting interactions between AuNPs and biological macromolecules, we investigated AuNPs-induced protein crystal growth. Differently functionalized AuNPs were tested as additives in cocrystallization studies with model proteins (hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL), ribonuclease A (RNase A), and proteinase K) as well as with case studies where there ...

Abstract. This work proposes a comprehensive method to assess rainfall thresholds for landslide initiation using a centenary landslide database associated with a single centenary daily rainfall data set. The method is applied to the Lisbon region and includes the rainfall return period analysis that was used to identify the critical rainfall combination (cumulated rainfall duration) related to each landslide event. The spatial representativeness of the reference rain gauge is evaluated and the rainfall ...

Abstract. The Amazon Basin plays key roles in the carbon and water cycles, climate change, atmospheric chemistry, and biodiversity. It has already been changed significantly by human activities, and more pervasive change is expected to occur in the coming decades. It is therefore essential to establish long-term measurement sites that provide a baseline record of present-day climatic, biogeochemical, and atmospheric conditions and that will be operated over coming decades to monitor change in the ...

Modern mixed carbonate and siliciclastic shelves have been described on continental margins around the world. In general, the mixed shelf sedimentation model shows a cross-shelf gradient from terrigenous to carbonate sediments or a shift from the continental shelf to the basin. Here we use acoustic seabed mapping, surface sediment sampling and high-resolution seabed videos to report the coeval occurrence of biogenic reefs, rhodolith beds and river deltas along the southeast-east Brazilian shelf. ...

The nanoparticles so obtained are highly monodispersed, thus avoiding the use of further time consuming and cumbersome purification procedures. In addition, the capping ...

Abstract. Methane (CH4) atmospheric mixing ratio measurements are analyzed for the period between June 2013 and November 2018 at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO). We describe the seasonal and diurnal patterns of nighttime events in which CH4 mixing ratios at the uppermost (79 m a.g.l.) inlet are significantly higher than the lowermost inlet (4 m a.g.l.) by 8 ppb or more. These nighttime events were found to be associated with a wind direction originating from the southeast and wind speeds between ...

Abstract The reaction rate of an explosive – also called detonation velocity – is the easiest parameter to measure, and also one of the most important in characterizing the process of detonation front propagation in a 1D approach. This paper presents some peculiarities that were observed during the testing of our passive/active optical methods to measure detonation velocity. Both methods were tested using bare optic fiber probes and optic fiber probes protected with a stainless steel tube. The active ...
