Background Endometrial cancer presents well-defined risk factors: myometrial invasion, histological subtype, tumor grade, lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI). Some low and intermediate-risk endometrioid endometrial cancer patients exhibited unexpected outcomes. This study aimed to investigate other clinical-pathological factors that might influence the recurrence rates of patients diagnosed with low and intermediate-risk endometrioid endometrial cancer. Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) is a developing region characterized for its importance for global food security, producing 23 and 11% of the global beef and milk production, respectively. The region's ruminant livestock sector however, is under scrutiny on environmental grounds due to its large contribution to enteric methane (CH4) emissions and influence on global climate change. Thus, the identification of effective CH4 mitigation strategies which do not compromise animal performance is urgently ...

We present a paleomagnetic study on the well-dated 1980–1960 Ma (U-Pb) volcanic rocks from the Surumu Group, northern Roraima State (Amazonian Craton). After thermal and AF demagnetization, characteristic northwestern remanent magnetization (ChRM) directions with downward inclinations were isolated (mean: Dm = 298.6°, Im = 39.4°, α95 = 10.1°, N = 20, K = 11.4), which yielded a paleomagnetic pole (SG) located at 234.8°E, 27.4°N (A95 = 9.8°). Magnetic mineralogy experiments show that ChRM is carried by high-Hc, and ...

Background: Mechanisms linking behavioral stress and inflammation are poorly understood, mainly in distal lung tissue. Objective: We have investigated whether the forced swim stress (FS) could modulate lung tissue mechanics, iNOS, cytokines, oxidative stress activation, eosinophilic recruitment, and remodeling in guinea pigs (GP) with chronic pulmonary inflammation. Methods: The GP were exposed to ovalbumin or saline aerosols (2×/wk/4wks, OVA, and SAL). Twenty-four hours after the 4th inhalation, the ...

It has been suggested that elderly people are more susceptible to infectious diseases because of immunosenescence. The well-described transient immunosuppressive effect of exercise may increase health risks in such populations. Although resistance training has been recommended to older individuals, little is known regarding its acute effects on immune indexes. This study examined the acute effects of resistance exercise sessions performed at different intensities (50 vs. 80% of one-repetition maximum [ ...

This present work reports the development and evaluation of a method for the direct determination of manganese in waters extracted during petroleum exploitation by Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (ET AAS) using Ir-W as permanent modifier. These waters, usually called produced waters, contain a wide range of organic and inorganic substances and are characterized by their high salinity. In order to achieve suitable experimental conditions for the method application, studies about the ...

Coastal regions in Southwest Europe have experienced major interventions and transformations of the territory with unprecedented urban development, primarily related to growing tourism activity. The coast is the place where marine and terrestrial processes converge, making it highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. However, the lack of information on the frequency of these extreme weather events and their impacts on the coast hampers an accurate analysis of the consequences of global ...

Polyphenols have been extensively exploited in the biomedical field because of their wide range of bioactive properties and historical use as traditional medicines. They typically present antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiamyloidogenic, and/or antitumor activities. In particular, cork water extracts and their components, have been previously reported to present antioxidant and antiamyloidogenic properties. On the basis of this knowledge, we tested cork water extract (CWE), cork water enriched extract ( ...

Knowledge is often produced from data generated in scientific investigations. An ever-growing number of scientific studies in several domains result into a massive amount of data, from which obtaining new knowledge requires computational help. For example, Alzheimer's Disease, a life-threatening degenerative disease that is not yet curable. As the scientific community strives to better understand it and find a cure, great amounts of data have been generated, and new knowledge can be produced. A ...

Abstract Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects the central nervous system and is mainly characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons and pro‐oxidant mechanisms. Eugenol has been widely studied due to its anti‐inflammatory and antioxidant activities, making it a promising neuroprotective agent. This study aimed to investigate the effects of eugenol and its combined action with levodopa in the 6‐hydroxydopamine‐induced Parkinson's disease model. Wistar rats were subjected ...

During the period 1998-2017, floods were responsible for 11% of the loss of life and 23% of the economic loss caused by climate-related and geophysical-related disasters worldwide. An integrated and effective definition of flood risk management strategies therefore still requires synthesized and comprehensive knowledge about the driving forces of flood risk. In this study, 278 Portuguese municipalities are analyzed and classified according to flood hazard, exposure, and vulnerability. After evaluating ...

The extracellular matrix is composed of hyaluronan of different molecular weights that play different roles in cellular proliferation, migration, and differentiation. The dysregulated accumulation of hyaluronan alters the mechanical and biochemical properties of the extracellular matrix and it is associated with several pathological states. Biomaterials can be engineered using the native hyaluronan backbone or chemically modified to target cells via specific cellular receptors, such as CD44. 2D ...

The Amazon rainforest is the world's largest tropical forest, and this biome may be a significant contributor to primary biological aerosol (PBA) emissions on a global scale. These aerosols also play a pivotal role in modulating ecosystem dynamics, dispersing biological material over geographic barriers and influencing climate through radiation absorption, light scattering, or acting as cloud condensation nuclei. Despite their importance, there are limited studies investigating the effect of environmental ...

Carbon isotope compositions of both sedimentary carbonate and organic matter can be used as key proxies of the global carbon cycle and of its evolution through time, as long as they are acquired from waters where the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is in isotope equilibrium with the atmospheric CO2. However, in shallow water platforms and epeiric settings, the influence of local to regional parameters on carbon cycling may lead to DIC isotope variations unrelated to the global carbon cycle. This ...

Rare earth elements plus yttrium (REY) mass fractions of ancient carbonate rocks are used to track changes in chemistry of past seawater. Here we investigate REY patterns in two carbonate sections from the Ediacaran Bambuí Group, São Francisco Basin (Brazil), which comprise its two lowermost transgressive-regressive second-order sedimentary sequences. Shale normalised distributions vary with the sequence stratigraphy framework. In the basal 2nd-order sequence, carbonate samples from the basal sequence ...

Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a glycosaminoglycan widely explored for cartilage regeneration. Its bioactivity is influenced by sulfation degree and pattern, and distinct sulfation in marine CS may open new therapeutic possibilities. In this context, we studied for the first time the isolation and characterisation of CS from Rabbit Fish (Chimaera monstrosa). We propose an efficient process starting with enzymatic hydrolysis, followed by chemical treatments and ending in membrane purification. All steps ...
