John A. Booth, Patricia Bayer Richard,

Robert Putnam argues that civil society-citizen organizational activity-contributes to successful governance and democracy, outcomes potentially helpful in reconstructing Central America. Putnam does not, however, specify how civil society shapes government performance. We demonstrate how group participation might impinge upon the state through the "political capital" of political participation and democratic norms. We first explore the relationships among two civil society measures (formal group ...

John A. Booth, Patricia Bayer Richard,

Putnam argues that civil society—citizen activity in organizations—contributes to successful governance, but he does not specify in detail how this occurs. This article spells out how citizens' participation in groups might impinge on the state through both political participation and democratic norms. The authors consider not only Putnam's social capital but add new “political capital” variables. The relationships among civil society and social and political capital are then explored, employing ...

A panel study of media use and attention during the 1988 primary election campaign revealed stronger cognitive involvement in reading newspaper campaign coverage than in viewing television coverage. Also, to a greater degree than with television, those who relied on newspapers attended to them regularly.

Theory: Few studies have examined political repression's effects upon individual behavior and attitudes. We theorize that regimes use repression to constrain political behavior and values so as to limit demands and opposition. We therefore expect intense repression to reduce participation and support for democracy. Hypotheses: Using six Central American countries for a most-similar systems test, we hypothesize that, other factors held constant, both 1) citizens perceiving more repression and 2) ...

John A. Booth, Patricia Bayer Richard,

Abstract A longstanding scholarly debate asks what lasting changes revolution makes in political attitudes and behaviors. Scholars generally regard revolution as transformative, but research on revolution's behavioral and cultural legacies after transfers of state power has been limited. This study explores revolution's residual impact on individuals' electoral participation, civil society engagement, and social capital by comparing postrevolutionary Nicaraguans to their Central American neighbors. ...

The recessive mutation at the pale ear (ep) locus on mouse chromosome 19 was found to be the homologue of human Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS). A positional cloning strategy using yeast artificial chromosomes spanning the HPS locus was used to identify the HPS gene and its murine counterpart. These genes and their predicted proteins are highly conserved at the nucleotide and amino acid levels. Sequence analysis of the mutant ep gene revealed the insertion of an intracisternal A particle element in ...

The distribution pattern of MCPA ([(4-chloro- o -tolyl)oxy] acetic acid) on leaf surfaces of three species was studied using the cathodoluminescence detection mode of a scanning electron microscope. On low-wax-content sugarbeet ( Beta vulgaris L.) leaves MCPA concentrated in the depressions over the anticlinal cell walls when applied at high volumes (748 and 374 L/ha). At low volumes (23 L/ha), numerous small deposits of MCPA were randomly distributed over both anticlinal and periclinal walls. These distinct ...

The plant hormone auxin mediates developmental patterning by a mechanism that is based on active transport. In the shoot apical meristem, auxin gradients are thought to be set up through a feedback loop between auxin and the activity and polar localization of its transporter, the PIN1 protein. Two distinct molecular mechanisms for the subcellular polarization of PIN1 have been proposed. For leaf positioning (phyllotaxis), an "up-the-gradient" PIN1 polarization mechanism has been proposed, whereas ...

Abstract Drug induced agranulocytosis is an uncommon but potentially fatal complication. In some cases, it may be associated with hypoplasia and depletion of granulocytic precursors in the marrow, leading to prolonged neutropenia. We report on the use of granulocytic‐macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM‐CSF) in two such cases, at a dose of 10 μg per kilogram per day subcutaneously. The absolute neutrophil count rose above 500/mm 3 in 3 days in both cases. We believe that GM‐CSF expedited the ...

summary We studied the introduction of a telecare and rehabilitation scheme in north-west Surrey. It was decided not to create a new team to provide the new services, but to involve established teams and individuals. The introduction of telecare therefore added to the roles and responsibilities of these teams. This staffing policy helped to establish awareness of the project within the local care system and to support its subsequent deployment. An education and training unit was established to demonstrate ...
