D-glyceric aciduria is a rare inborn error of serine and fructose metabolism that was first described in 1974. Most affected individuals have presented with neurological symptoms. The molecular basis of D-glyceric aciduria is largely unknown; possible causes that have been discussed are deficiencies of D-glycerate dehydrogenase, triokinase, and D-glycerate kinase. In 1989, van Schaftingen has reported decreased D-glycerate kinase activity in the liver of a single patient with D-glyceric aciduria. ...

Pregnant women are often iron deficient, and iron deficiency has adverse effects on thyroid metabolism. Impaired maternal thyroid function during pregnancy may cause neurodevelopmental delays in the offspring. Our objective was to investigate whether maternal iron status is a determinant of TSH and/or total T(4) (TT4) concentrations during pregnancy. In a representative national sample of Swiss pregnant women (n = 365) in the second and third trimester, samples of urine and blood were collected, and data ...

To bring evidence for or against the hypothesis of catalytic hydrogenation by intact trinuclear arene ruthenium clusters containing an oxo cap, cationic Ru3O clusters with three different arene ligands (intrinsically chiral tetrahedra) have been synthesized as racemic mixtures. By introduction of a chiral auxiliary substituent at one of the three different arene ligands, the separation of the two diastereomers was possible. The chiral Ru3O framework was evidenced by X-ray crystallography, by circular ...

We present an experimental study of charge transfer in polymer thin-film field-effect devices. The rearrangement of the charge-carrier density in the transistor channel upon a gate-voltage swing has been monitored in real time and space by means of noncontact scanning potentiometry. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with a simple theory, in which the charging currents are assumed to be driven by drift in the self-induced electric field. The charge density exponentially approaches ...

Parasitic contact resistance effects are becoming a major issue in organic transistors in that they can severely limit or even dominate their overall transistor performance. We present a systematic study of the contact resistance in bottom-contact polymer field-effect transistors made from poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as well as poly-9,9′dioctyl-fluorene-co-bithiophene (F8T2). A microscopic approach based on noncontact scanning-probe potentiometry was used to directly separate the transport properties ...

We report on high-resolution potentiometry of operating organic thin-film field-effect transistors by means of scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy. It is demonstrated that the measured potential reflects the electrostatic potential of the accumulation layer at the semiconductor/insulator interface. We present data revealing gate bias and lateral electric field dependence of the field-effect mobility in poly(hexylthiophene) at temperatures from 50 to 300 K.

We previously isolated a family of bone-resorbing proteins from human cancer ascites fluid and established that the three purified bone-resorbing proteins were chemically and immunochemically related to each other and to alpha-2HS glycoprotein (alpha 2HS). After this finding we purified the normal human serum counterpart of these ascites proteins and studied its effects on bone resorption. The bone-resorbing properties of normal human serum alpha 2HS were examined in vitro over a wide dose range. ...

Environmental scientific research is highly becoming data-driven and dependent on high performance computing infrastructures to process ever increasing large volume and diverse data sets. Consequently, there is a growing recognition of the need to share data, methods, algorithms, and infrastructure to make scientific research more effective, efficient, open, transparent, reproducible, accessible, and usable by different users. However, Earth Observations (EO) Open Science is still undervalued, and ...

Abstract Purpose To determine the effectiveness of quality circles on prescribing patterns of primary care physicians in Germany and to explore the influence of specific factors on changes. Methods Three large non‐randomised comparative studies were performed in primary care in Germany, with baseline measurements in 2001 and follow‐up measurements in 2003. 1090 physicians were in intervention groups and 2090 physicians in control groups. For each physician, data on 444 patients and 1201 prescriptions ...

We predict and analyze density-functional theory (DFT)-based structures for the recently isolated Au(40)(SR)(24) cluster. Combining structural information extracted from ligand-exchange reactions, circular dichroism and transmission electron microscopy leads us to propose two families of low-energy structures that have a chiral Au-S framework on the surface. These families have a common geometrical motif where a nonchiral Au(26) bi-icosahedral cluster core is protected by 6 RS-Au-SR and 4 RS-Au-SR- ...
