Neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is usually acquired at birth, although a few infants have had findings suggestive of intrauterine infection. We describe 13 babies who had clinical manifestations of intrauterine HSV infection, including skin lesions and scars at birth (12), chorioretinitis (eight), microcephaly (seven), hydranencephaly (five), and microphthalmia (two). All infants had combinations of these defects. Infection was proved by viral isolation in each case; all isolates were HSV- ...

James H. Christy, Richard S. Morse,

Graves' disease has recently been shown to exist in a euthyroid form in untreated patients. Sporadic reports of a hypothyroid form are beginning to emerge, thus illustrating the multlfaceted nature of this disorder, with thyrotoxicosis at one end of the spectrum and hypothyroidism at the other. Three patients with nonthyrotoxic Graves' disease and concomitant hypothyroidism were seen at Emory University Hospital in one year, and detailed studies were made to help elucidate the nature of this unusual ...

SUMMARY (1) Recruitment and survival of juvenile Tsuga heterophylla were followed on different substrata on the west slope of the Cascade Range, central Oregon, U.S.A. (2) Whilst seeds fell mainly from October to March, some were shed in all but six of thirty-two consecutive months. (3) Almost all juveniles occurred on decaying logs even though fallen timber may cover only 10-30% of the forest floor. (4) Recruitment on all substrata varied widely from year to year, as expected in a conifer with mast ...

This paper investigates surface and satellite temperature trends over the period from 1979 to 2008. Surface temperature data sets from the National Climate Data Center and the Hadley Center show larger trends over the 30‐year period than the lower‐tropospheric data from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Remote Sensing Systems data sets. The differences between trends observed in the surface and lower‐tropospheric satellite data sets are statistically significant in most comparisons, with ...

Paola C. López‐Duarte, John H. Christy, Richard A. Tankersley,

The genus Uca (fiddler crabs) includes both estuarine and coastal species, the zoeae of which must travel varying distances to reach the sea. Rapid seaward transport following hatching may be facilitated by tidal currents through an ebb‐phased circatidal rhythm in vertical swimming by larvae. Assuming there is a cost to vertical swimming, we predicted that endogenous swimming rhythms would be stronger in zoeae of species that live far up estuaries (oligohaline and mesohaline areas) and weaker or absent ...

GH Pyke, Michelle T. Christy, Richard E. Major,

We define territorial behaviour as aggressive behaviour that occurs repeatedly in about the same location with associated submissive behaviour on the part of the individuals or groups to which the aggression is directed. Of a worldwide total of about 170 honeyeater species (Meliphagidae), 36 have been described as being territorial and we consider that 28 of these have been shown to satisfy our definition of territoriality. We discuss the consequences of territorial behaviour and the determination ...

The effect of pressure on the crystal structure of ${\mathrm{GaAsO}}_{4}$ has been studied using energy-dispersive powder diffraction up to 19.7 GPa. A structural phase transition was observed between 6.3 and 9.5 GPa from the ambient hexagonal structure to a triclinic structure. A model for this new high-pressure phase is presented. The low- and high-pressure phases were found to have bulk moduli of 17.6 and 177.0 GPa, respectively. The phase transition is reversible and first order with a volume discontinuity ...

Microglia are the professional immune cells of the brain, which support numerous physiological processes. One of the defensive functions provided by microglia involves secretion of cytotoxins aimed at destroying invading pathogens. It is also recognized that the adverse activation of microglia in diseased brains may lead to secretion of cytotoxic molecules, which could be damaging to the surrounding cells, including neurons. Several of these toxins, such as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, ...

Abstract The four core histones H2A, H2B, H3, H4, and the linker histone H1 primarily bind DNA and regulate gene expression within the nucleus. Evidence collected mainly from the peripheral tissues illustrates that histones can be released into the extracellular space by activated or damaged cells. In this article, we first summarize the innate immune-modulatory properties of extracellular histones and histone-containing complexes, such as nucleosomes, and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), described ...

Astrocytes are the main support cells of the central nervous system. They also participate in neuroimmune reactions. In response to pathological and immune stimuli, astrocytes transform to reactive states characterized by increased release of inflammatory mediators. Some of these molecules are neuroprotective and inflammation resolving while others, including reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)− 9, L-glutamate, and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF), are well- ...
