Annika Perry, A. V. Brown, Stephen Cavers, Joan Cottrell, Richard A. Ennos,

Abstract Spatial heterogeneity in pathogen pressure leads to genetic variation in, and evolution of, disease‐related traits among host populations. In contrast, hosts are expected to be highly susceptible to exotic pathogens as there has been no evolution of defence responses. Host response to pathogens can therefore be an indicator of a novel or endemic pathosystem. Currently, the most significant threat to native B ritish S cots pine ( P inus sylvestris ) forests is D othistroma needle blight ( DNB ) ...

Kevin Donnelly, Stephen Cavers, Joan Cottrell, Richard A. Ennos,

The remnants of the Caledonian Native Pinewood are distributed across a relatively narrow geographic area in the Scottish Highlands yet inhabit a steep environmental gradient in terms of rainfall, temperature and altitude. Previous work based on common garden trials has demonstrated that native pine populations (Pinus sylvestris (L.)) exhibit differentiation in terms of growth, phenology and frost resistance. However, despite their important role in plant fitness, no such information is available ...

Abstract Whole‐genome‐shotgun ( WGS ) sequencing of total genomic DNA was used to recover ~1 Mbp of novel mitochondrial (mt DNA ) sequence from Pinus sylvestris (L.) and three members of the closely related Pinus mugo species complex. DNA was extracted from megagametophyte tissue from six mother trees from locations across Europe, and 100‐bp paired‐end sequencing was performed on the Illumina HiSeq platform. Candidate mt DNA sequences were identified by their size and coverage characteristics, and by comparison ...

We propose a novel method for automatically adjusting parameters in ranked-output text retrieval systems to improve retrieval performance. A ranked-output text retrieval system implements a ranking function which orders documents, placing documents estimated to be more relevant to the user's query before less relevant ones. The system adjusts its parameters to maximize the match between the system's document ordering and a target ordering. The target ordering is typically given by user feedback ...

Summary The effect of dietary biotin supplementation, at a dose rate of 0.12 mg/kg bwt, on growth and growth rate of the hooves of 8 match‐paired ponies was investigated in a controlled feeding trial. Treatment animals had a mean hoof growth at the midline dead centre of the hoof capsule of 35.34 mm after 5 months of biotin supplementation compared to control animals 30.69 nun (P<0.05). Comparison of regression analysis also showed that biotin supplementation produced a significantly higher (P< ...

The mass-luminosity relation for Cepheids depends on the degree of mixing in their main-sequence progenitors. Masses of Cepheids can be inferred by using different aspects of pulsation theory. These methods have in the past led to diverging results, showing that something was wrong in either evolution theory or pulsation theory or both. For some binary Cepheids dynamical masses, which are independent of pulsation and evolution theories, can be determined. V636 Sco is one of a handful of Cepheid ...

The use of cortical suspensory fixation in conjunction with an interference screw to treat distal biceps ruptures has yielded favorable results. However, literature examining the incidence of fixation failure in a large consecutive series of patients treated with this technique is lacking.A retrospective review of electronic medical records identified 170 distal biceps ruptures in 168 consecutive patients (164 men and 4 women) treated using a cortical button in conjunction with an interference screw. ...
