Analytical UV absorption detection for microfluidic devices, capillary electrophoresis, and even high-performance liquid chromatography is hampered by the small detection volumes, short absorption paths, and the need to sample at a high rate with a stable background and low noise. Fiber-loop ring-down spectroscopy (FLRDS) permits absorption detection of dilute liquid samples in volumes as small as a few nanoliters, while being insensitive to light source fluctuations and permitting a millisecond ...

Abstract The development of “soft” ionization methods has enabled the mass spectrometric analysis of higher‐order structural features of proteins. We have applied electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI‐MS) to the analysis of the number and composition of polypeptide chains in homomeric and heteromeric leucine zippers. In comparison with other methods that have been used to analyze leucine zippers, such as analytical ultracentrifugation, gel chromatography, or electrophoretic band shift assays, ...

Abstract: Hemispheres, spinal cords, and sciatic nerves were taken from taiep, carrier, and control rats at ages ranging from 1 day to 16 months. Absolute myelin yields from CNS taiep tissues peaked at ∼2 months and then decreased until they reached a low but stable level. Myelin yield from the affected hemispheres expressed as a percentage of age‐matched controls decreased continuously from 2 weeks until it reached a stable level of ∼10–15%. The same was true for the spinal cords, but here the myelin ...

The stability of a coiled coil or leucine zipper is controlled by hydrophobic interactions and electrostatic forces between the constituent helices. We have designed a 30-residue peptide with the repeating seven-residue pattern of a coiled coil, (abcdefg)n, and with Glu in positions e and g of each heptad. The glutamate side chains prevented folding at pH values above 6 because of electrostatic repulsion across the helix dimer interface as well as within the individual helices. Protonation of the ...

The hitherto unknown syn and anti isomers of benzotris(norbornadiene) 7, the only molecules that include both features known to lead to bond length alternation in benzenes, i.e. bicyclic ring strain and π–π interaction, have been synthesized from 2,3-dibromonorbornadiene using butyllithium and copper(I) iodide.

Up to 80% yields of cyclotrimers, including 2 depicted below, can be achieved by reaction of bromo(stannyl)alkenes such as 1 with Cu(NO3)2 · 3H2O at room temperature in THF. This route, a definite improvement over previously reported methods, makes such molecules available in sufficient quantity for study, for example, as precursors of fullerene fragments.
