Abstract Background A common SNP upstream of the INSIG2 gene, rs7566605 (g.-10,1025G>C, Chr2:118,552,255, NT_022135.15), was reported to be associated with obesity (Body Mass Index, [BMI]) in a genome-wide association scan using the Framingham Heart Study but has not been reproduced in other cohorts. As BMI is a relatively insensitive measure of adiposity that is subject to many confounding variables, we sought to determine the relationship between the INSIG2 SNP and subcutaneous fat volumes measured ...

Luke J. Harmon, Richard E. Glor,
The Mantel test, based on comparisons of distance matrices, is commonly employed in comparative biology, but its statistical properties in this context are unknown. Here, we evaluate the performance of the Mantel test for two applications in comparative biology: testing for phylogenetic signal, and testing for an evolutionary correlation between two characters. We find that the Mantel test has poor performance compared to alternative methods, including low power and, under some circumstances, inflated ...

Increasing demands on water supplies, along with concerns about non-point source pollution, and water quality–based ecological factors all point to the need for observing stream flow perturbations and pollutant discharges at higher resolution than has been practical until now. A bacteriocin-like substance, active against strains of Clostridium botulinum type E, is produced by certain nontoxic organisms whose biochemical properties and morphological characteristics are similar to type E. The substance, for which the name “boticin E” is proposed, is bacteriolytic for vegetative cells and bacteriostatic for spores of type E. Its spectrum of activity is somewhat strain-specific. Of the clostridial species tested, only C. botulinum type E and, to a lesser extent, C. perfringens ...

Abstract Weanling hamsters were inoculated intracerebrally with brain suspensions from normal or scrapie‐infected hamsters. A third group of uninoculated animals was fed cuprizone. Histologic and electron microscopic examination of the neural retinas and retinal pigment epithelium was done. At 50 days postinoculation, when scrapie‐infected animals began to show clinical signs of encephalopathy, there was a variable degree of photoreceptor degeneration. By the time animals were moribund, at 74 days ...

Abstract Hamsters experimentally inoculated with scrapie had histologic and ultrastructural changes in their retinas before clinical signs of central nervous system disease became evident at 50 days postinoculation. The retinal changes were limited to the photoreceptors and began with degenerative changes in the inner segments as early as 8 days postinoculation. As the inner segment lesions became more prominent, associated degenerative changes within outer segments were seen (38 days postinoculation). ...

A collaborative study was conducted of a new method for differentiating members of the Bacillus cereus group. Using the new method, each of 14 collaborators identified 8 Bacillus cultures, which represented 3 biotypes of the B. cereus group. Each culture was tested for motility, hemolytic activity on trypticase-soy-sheep blood agar, and rhizoid growth on nutrient agar; carbol-fuchsin stain was used to determine the presence of protein toxin crystals. Cultures were identified as B. cereus (biotype ...
