The importance of the complement system in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has long been recognized. However, despite an unprecedented amount of SLE clinical trial activities ongoing at this time, complement inhibitors have been omitted from the therapeutic assault on this disease. We review data generated from murine lupus that provide scientific support for the study of human SLE. Also reviewed is the sole study of a complement inhibitor, eculizumab, performed in patients ...

Data from a new muon-nucleon scattering experiment includes 513 events, of which 449 are dimuons and 64 are trimuons. Conventional hadronic and electromagnetic processes account for less than 15% of these events. Model calculations suggest that the majority of the dimuons result from associated charm production with a total cross section of about 3 nb.

ACUTE renal failure due to tubular damage is in many cases a complication that is entirely reversible, provided the patient can be maintained alive and in reasonably good physiologic condition long enough to allow recovery to take place. Since World War II, increased understanding of this disorder has led to better management, and the most dramatic addition to therapy during this period has been extracorporeal hemodialysis. Despite advances in treatment, however, acute renal failure due to tubular ...

Ubiquitin-proteasome mediated protein degradation has been widely implicated in fear memory formation in the amygdala. However, to date, the protein targets of the proteasome remain largely unknown, limiting our understanding of the functional significance for protein degradation in fear memory formation. Additionally, whether similar proteins are targeted by the proteasome between sexes has yet to be explored. Here, we combined a degradation-specific K48 Tandem Ubiquitin Binding Entity (TUBE) with ...

Leukodystrophies are a broad class of genetic disorders that result in disruption or destruction of central myelination. Although the mechanisms underlying these disorders are heterogeneous, there are many common symptoms that affect patients irrespective of the genetic diagnosis. The comfort and quality of life of these children is a primary goal that can complement efforts directed at curative therapies. Contained within this report is a systems-based approach to management of complications that ...

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a ripe area for drug development. There are great unmet needs, especially for those with lupus nephritis, in which good responses occur only in the minority of treated patients. An expanded understanding of immunopathogenesis of SLE coupled with the availability of sophisticated bioengineering technologies has resulted in the ability to supply the lupus community with the reagents needed to perform clinical trials. However, drug development in SLE has proven ...

Michelle Kiley, Frank Voyvodic, Richard J. Burns,

Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary paroxysmal chronic contractions of the facial musculature. The usual cause is vascular compression of the seventh cranial nerve, at its exit zone from the brain stem. We report a case of left hemifacial spasm, in a 66-year-old woman, in which the neuroradiological investigation with magnetic resonance imaging showed a hypervascular soft tissue mass arising from the left skull base, in the jugular foramen. This lesion was thought ...

Michelle Kiley, Michelle King, Richard J. Burns,

Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) was initially associated with alcoholism. Subsequently other factors, including rapid reversal of hyponatraemia and extreme serum hypoosmolality associated with severe burns, have been identified as other important factors in its pathogenesis. Extra-pontine lesions have also been described. CPM may be found at autopsy, either having been overlooked during life or as an incidental finding. Its precise incidence is not known but the ability to diagnose it during life ...

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation-related complications are potentially catastrophic if not addressed quickly. Because complications are rare, high-fidelity simulation is recommended as part of the training regimen for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation specialists. We hypothesized that the use of standardized checklists would improve team performance during simulated extracorporeal membrane oxygenation emergencies.Randomized simulation-based trial.A quaternary-care academic hospital with a regional ...

Maureen E. Kenny, Lou Anna K. Simon, Karen Kiley-Brabeck, Richard M. Lerner,

There is a lot more that can, and ideally will, be gained from a college education than the knowledge and skills inculcated through the various major, minor, or elective courses offered in the curricula of colleges or universities. Most higher education institutions hope that the opportunities that students are provided during their four undergraduate years will imbue them with more than an academic education. Most colleges and universities aspire to creating successful alumni, people who will contribute ...
