Terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) have the potential to revolutionise measurement of the three-dimensional structure of vegetation canopies for applications in ecology, hydrology and climate change. This potential has been the subject of recent research that has attempted to measure forest biophysical variables from TLS data, and make comparisons with two-dimensional data from hemispherical photography. This research presents a systematic comparison between forest canopy gap fraction estimates derived ...

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that immune mediator concentrations in the bronchoalveolar fluid (BALF) are predictive of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) and demonstrate specific patterns of dysregulation, depending on the presence of acute cellular rejection, BOS, aspiration, and timing of lung transplantation. STUDY DESIGN: We prospectively collected 257 BALF samples from 105 lung transplant recipients. The BALF samples were assessed for absolute and differential white blood cell counts and ...

A sliding mode feedback controller, based on the Generalized PI control approach, is developed for the regulation of the "boost" DC-to-DC power converter circuit. The feedback control scheme uses only output capacitor voltage measurements, as well as knowledge of the available input signal, represented by the switch positions. The robustness of the feedback scheme is tested with abusively large, non-modeled, sudden load resistance variations.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) presents a viable route for converting a vast range of materials into liquid fuel, without the need for pre-drying. Currently, HTL studies produce bio-crude with properties that fall short of diesel or biodiesel standards. Upgrading bio-crude improves the physical and chemical properties to produce a fuel corresponding to diesel or biodiesel. Properties such as viscosity, density, heating value, oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur content, and chemical composition can be ...

Background Focal epilepsies are caused by a malfunction of nerve cells localised in one part of one cerebral hemisphere. In studies, estimates of the number of individuals with focal epilepsy who do not become seizure‐free despite optimal drug therapy vary according to the age of the participants and which focal epilepsies are included, but have been reported as at least 20% and in some studies up to 70%. Lignin biosynthesis typically results in a polymer with several inter-monomer bond linkages, and the heterogeneity of linkages presents a challenge for depolymerization processes. While several enzyme classes have been shown to cleave common dimer linkages in lignin, the pathway of bacterial β-1 spirodienone linkage cleavage has not been elucidated. Here, we identified a pathway for cleavage of 1,2-diguaiacylpropane-1,3-diol (DGPD), a β-1 linked biaryl representative of a ring-opened spirodienone ...

The literature on the genetics of feeding and drinking, and the genetic methods that will be useful for future research, are described. Four subjects which have been studied most thoroughly by geneticists are discussed: intake of plain water, intake of and preference for flavored water, body weight and food intake regulation when confronted with high-fat diets, and excess body weight. Although a moderate number of strain comparisons and a few genetic analyses have been reported, relatively little ...

This paper's focus is on the extremely rapid expansion of educational enrollments that occurred throughout the world between 1950 and 1970. The universal expansion of education during this period led us to construct diffusion models and to explain this process as a consequence of the population characteristics of educational systems. Estimates of these models show that such a self-generating process explains much of the variation in educational expansion. We then test the effect of economic, political, ...

Increasing public exposure to gambling as a recreational option is leading to increased pathological gambling . The prevalence and correlates of substance abuse in a population of severe pathological gamblers is investigated. The results indicate a high rate of alcohol abuse and drug abuse in this population and in their biological families. The implications of these findings for clinicians working with pathological gamblers and substance abusers are discussed.
