Abstract Background Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is characterized by advanced disease at presentation (70–80% of pediatric cases) and accounts for 10–15% of all childhood lymphomas. Treatment strategies for pediatric ALCL vary from short pulse B‐NHL chemotherapy to prolonged leukemia like therapy. The optimal treatment strategy is unknown. Methods CCG‐5941 used a compressed aggressive multiagent T‐cell lineage chemotherapy regimen consisting of a 3‐week induction therapy (vincristine, prednisone, ...

The historical focus of renewable energy policy in the UK, as in most nations, has been on supporting deployment in renewable energy sources of electricity. The adoption of ambitious EU wide targets for renewable energy has forced greater consideration of renewable energy sources of heat (RES-H). The UK pushed ahead rapidly in considering different policy options and legislating a new instrument, the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) to support RES-H, a form of tariff mechanism designed with the specifics ...

Nitric oxide and superoxide are formed endogenously and can react with each other and with other molecules to form a range of secondary and tertiary products. Some of these (e.g., peroxynitrite) are potent DNA-damaging agents and others (e.g., S-nitrosoglutathione) can act as reservoirs of the reactive species. Although the chemistry of these processes is now becoming understood, the question of which products are significant in vivo is not necessarily clear. To investigate these processes we have ...

Although glutathione is an important scavenging molecule within the cell, it can also act as a pro-oxidant and at biological concentrations (1 mM) can induce DNA damage. We have used a sensitive cell-free Comet assay for DNA strand breakage to investigate this damage and to try to determine the active species involved. We show a substantial protection against glutathione-mediated DNA damage by superoxide dismutase (200 U/ml) and complete protection by combined superoxide dismutase and catalase. Damage ...

Systemic inflammation is an integral part of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and air pollution is associated with cardiorespiratory mortality, yet the interrelationships are not fully defined. We examined associations between nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) exposure (as a marker of traffic-related air pollution) and pro-inflammatory cytokines, and investigated effect modification and mediation by post-bronchodilator airflow obstruction (post-BD-AO) and cardiovascular risk. Data from middle-aged ...
