This article studies the lithic industry of the Early Palaeolithic from the terraces of the Roussillon, in the S of France. The geomorphological revision of the flood levels allows these industries to be related to the geochronology of the terraces which were formed in between the late Early Pleistocene and the Middle Pleistocene, and thus allows a regional chrono-cultural framework to be established. By analyzing the technology of the lithic industry derived from the concept of chaîne opératoire ...

We describe a highly efficient new methodology for the synthesis of (E)-α,β-unsaturated esters from aldehydes. In our DMAP-catalyzed reaction, both aromatic as well as aliphatic aldehydes furnish the desired products highly regio- and stereoselectively if treated with commercially available or synthetically easily accessible malonic acid half ester. A large scale application in the synthesis of p-methoxycinnamates, which are of use as sunscreen ingredients, is described.

Asymmetric organocatalytic additions of anthrones to activated alkenes are discussed. The reaction between anthrone or dithranol and α,β-unsaturated aldehydes is catalyzed by diphenylprolinol trimethylsilyl ether in toluene at −40 °C, giving the Michael adducts with good yields and enantioselectivities. Bifunctional amino-thioureas efficiently catalyze the additions of anthrones to both nitroalkenes and maleimides, and high enantioselectivities can be achieved in both instances at room temperature. ...

The synthesis of piperidines and piperidines derivatives in enantiopure fashion has been a challenging goal for organic chemists. In this report we developed a nice cascade reaction for piperidine derivatives based in an amidomalonate Michael addition to enals followed by an intramolecular hemiaminal formation with good yields and enantioselectivities. Moreover we studied the 'in situ' intramolecular cyclization of this hemiaminals with alcohols forming fused piperidine–oxazolidines.

A convergent approach for a family of fluorescent nucleosides is described. It relies on thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione that serves as a core heterocycle. This condensed pyrimidine is converted into an emissive pyrimidine nucleoside analogue by N-glycosylation and into an emissive purine nucleoside analogue by C-glycosidation at the thiophene's beta position. The design principles of this archetypical system are outlined together with the syntheses and photophysical properties of the resulting ...

This work describes a general protocol for the oxidation of indole and oxindole derivatives with dimethyldioxirane to give 3-hydroxyoxindoles present in many natural products. This strategy allowed us to synthesize the natural product 1, to carry out the first total synthesis of 4, a formal total synthesis of donaxaridine (5) and to achieve the synthesis of pyrroloindoline 8, a debromo analogue of the natural product flustraminol B (7).

The molecular mechanism of the ionic [2+2] cycloaddition (I-22CA) reactions of a keteniminium cation (KC) with acetylene and propyne has been investigated using DFT methods at the MPWB1K/6-311G(d,p) level. These I-22CA reactions take place via a two-step mechanism. The first step is the nucleophilic attack of these alkynes on the central carbon of KC, yielding cyclopropene intermediates, while the second step corresponds to the conversion of these intermediates into more stable cyclobuteniminium cations ( ...

Additionally, with diethylzinc the products were formed with very high diastereoselectivity, affording the syn product (d.r. greater than 95:5), except in one case where epimerization of the product is rapid. In contrast, Grignard and trialkylaluminum reagents afforded the anti diastereomers, with diminished stereoselectivity and formation ...

Abstract The study of Raney-Ni catalyzed chemo- and regioselective hydrogenolysis of diastereomeric nitrile-substituted spirocyclopropyloxindoles is presented. The chemoselectivity outcome of the reaction is remarkably influenced by the relative stereochemistry of the nitrile-substituted spirocyclopropyloxindoles. Chemo- and high regioselective cyclopropane ring-opening occurs from the syn diastereomers to give the corresponding 3-propylacetamide derivatives. X-ray crystallographic studies together ...

A mild and efficient iron (III)-catalyzed C3 chalcogenylation of indoles has been developed and the role of the iodide ions in this transformation was investigated. EPR experiments revealed the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) under the reaction conditions, supporting the formation of molecular iodine in the system, which in effect catalyze the reaction. The scope of the chalcogenylation was broad and the synthesis of more functionalized 3-selenylindoles was explored.
