A combined ligand-based and structure-based approach has previously allowed us to identify NR2B/NMDA receptor antagonists containing indole scaffold. In order to further explore the main structure activity relationships of this class of derivatives we herein report the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of new analogues. Some derivatives demonstrated to produce significant anticonvulsant properties and NMDA antagonism. The most active of them (3d) showed NR2B binding affinity equipotent ...

Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) have a wide range of clinical presentations, including dementia associated with white matter changes (WMCs). We report a case of DAVF presenting as a rapid progressive dementia and myoclonus without WMCs. A 64-year-old hypertensive and diabetic man was admitted because of a 3-month history of progressive cognitive decline, extrapyramidal and cerebellar signs, and myoclonus. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the brain showed dilated cerebellar veins and T2WI ...

Aims The purpose of this study was to investigate and summarize available evidence on the efficacy and safety of colchicine for pericarditis prevention. Disease recurrence is the major and most common complication of pericarditis and its prevention may reduce morbidity and management costs. Colchicine has been intensively studied in the last decade for pericarditis prevention. Methods Controlled clinical studies were searched in several databases and were included provided they focused on the pharmacologic ...

The understanding of linkages between disaster risk and urban development has seen important advances in recent decades. However, it falls short in addressing the production and reproduction of so-called urban “risk traps”, which are accumulation cycles of everyday risks and small-scale disasters with highly localized impacts, particularly on impoverished urban dwellers. Drawing on the action-research project cLIMA sin Riesgo, this paper examines risk-mitigating investment actions of state agencies, ...

An experimental study on mechanical properties, such as strength, elastic modulus and interlaminar fracture toughness of two different manufacturing processes namely autoclave vacuum bagging (AP) and resin liquid Pressurized Prepreg (PP) is outlined in this article. AP is a technique employed to create mechanical pressure on a laminate during its cure cycle. This process have for years enabled aerospace industry to maximize the physical properties of advanced composite materials. The resin liquid ...

The interobserver variation in the magnetic resonance (MR) location of cerebral vein and dural sinus thrombosis (CVT) has not been previously reported. Four independent observers rated a convenience sample of 40 MR/MR angiographies to assess whether or not each dural sinus and major cerebral veins were occluded. Interobserver reliability was measured using κ statistics. Interobserver agreement was comparable between the six pairs of raters. Agreement was excellent for thrombosis of the deep cerebral ...

Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of colchicine for pericarditis prevention. Background Recurrent pericarditis prevention is a major management goal that may reduce morbidity and management costs. Although empiric anti-inflammatory therapy is considered the mainstay of treatment, no specific drug has been proven to be efficacious for prevention but colchicine. Methods Controlled clinical studies were searched in several databases and were included provided they ...

This study presents the findings of a 10-year survey carried out by the Portuguese Aerobiology Network (RPA) at seven pollen-monitoring stations: five mainland stations (Oporto, Coimbra, Lisbon, Évora and Portimão) and two insular stations [Funchal (Madeira archipelago) and Ponta Delgada (Azores archipelago)]. The main aim of the study was to examine spatial and temporal variations in the Annual Pollen Index (API) with particular focus on the most frequently recorded pollen types. Pollen monitoring (2003– ...

The indole moiety is an important N-heterocycle found in natural products, and a key structural component of many value-added chemicals including pharmaceuticals. In particular, bis(3-indolyl)methanes (BIMs) are an important subgroup of indoles, composed of two indole units. Herein, we report the development of a simple method to access BIMs derivatives in yields of up to 77 % by exploiting a tBuOK-mediated coupling reaction of indoles and benzyl alcohols.

Colchicine is effective for the treatment of recurrent pericarditis. However, conclusive data are lacking regarding the use of colchicine during a first attack of acute pericarditis and in the prevention of recurrent symptoms. In a multicenter, double-blind trial, eligible adults with acute pericarditis were randomly assigned to receive either colchicine (at a dose of 0.5 mg twice daily for 3 months for patients weighing >70 kg or 0.5 mg once daily for patients weighing ≤70 kg) or placebo in addition ...

COVID-19 is a medical emergency, with 20 % of patients presenting with severe clinical manifestations. From the pathogenetic point of view, COVID-19 mimics two other well-known diseases characterized by cytokine storm and hyper-activation of the immune response, with consequent organ damage: acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) and macrophage activation syndrome (MAS). Hematologists are confident with these situations requiring a prompt therapeutic approach for switching off the uncontrolled cytokine ...

Vancomycin is an important antibiotic to treat serious nosocomial enterococci infections. Human activities, in particular those related with clinical practices performed in hospitals, can potentiate the transfer and selection of clinically-relevant resistant bacteria such as vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE). Indeed, previous studies demonstrated the occurrence of VRE in urban wastewater treatment plants and related environments (e.g. sewage, rivers). In this study, the occurrence of VRE in a ...

Abstract Glycosylation is an essential biological process that adds structural and functional diversity to cells and molecules, participating in physiological processes such as immunity. The immune response is driven and modulated by protein‐attached glycans that mediate cell‐cell interactions, pathogen recognition and cell activation. Therefore, abnormal glycosylation can be associated with deranged immune responses. Within human diseases presenting immunological defects are congenital disorders ...

Every year, grapevine pruning produces huge amounts of residue, 90% of which are from vine shoots. These are a rich source of natural antioxidants, mostly phenolic compounds, which, when properly extracted, can give rise to added-value products. However, their lack of solubility in aqueous media and high susceptibility to thermal and oxidative degradation highly limit their bioavailability. Encapsulation in suitable carriers may have a positive impact on their bioavailability and bioactivity. Previous ...

Background— Corticosteroid use is widespread in recurrent pericarditis, even if rarely indicated, and high doses (eg, prednisone 1.0 to 1.5 mg · kg −1 · d −1 ) are generally recommended, although only weak evidence supports their use with possible severe side effects. The aim of this work was to compare side effects, recurrences and other complications, and hospitalizations of a low- versus high-dose regimen of prednisone for recurrent pericarditis. Methods and Results— A retrospective review of all cases ...

From October 2021 to June 2022, 158 females of P. ordinaria and 70 of P. aspera were collected from the coastal rocky shores of the archipelago of Madeira (NE Atlantic Ocean). ...

Abstract Sodium deoxycholate forms hexagonal crystals, macromolecular fibres and, in aqueous solution, micellar aggregates. All these phases show a close resemblance in the distribution of the X-ray intensities, so it is reasonable to suppose that they are composed of almost identical structural units. X-Ray and thermal measurements confirm that the crystal and the fibre present similar structures and vaporization behaviour, as well as practically the same enthalpy changes. These structural models ...
