Despite great advances in the fight against cancer, traditional chemotherapy has been hindered by the dose dependent adverse side effects that reduce the usable doses for effective therapy. This has been associated to drug resistance in tumor cells that often cause relapse and therapy failure. Hydroalcoholic extracts from species Hypericum brasiliense Choisy (HB) and Hypericum cordatum (Vell. Conc.) N. Robson (HC), were evaluated on the central nervous system (CNS) in some pharmacological tests. Signs of toxicity were observed for both species during the initial screening when high doses of up to 100 mg/kg (i.p.) and 1000 mg/kg (oral) were utilized. 10 Be has been measured in a 300 m long ice core from Greenland. After a general analysis of the 10 Be data the potential and the limitations of 10Be records in ice to reconstruct solar variability are discussed. Special emphasis is given to periods of low solar activity (Maunder Minimum etc.). The ‘clock problem’ is addressed, also the question whether the Schwabe cycle maintains its phase. Finally the question of what 10Be can tell us about changes of the solar irradiance in the past is explored.

A nodal Enriques surface can have at most 8 nodes. We give an explicit description of Enriques surfaces with 8 nodes, showing that they are quotients of products of elliptic curves by a group isomorphic to or to acting freely in codimension 1. We use this result to show that if S is a minimal surface of general type with p g =0 such that the image of the bicanonical map is birational to an Enriques surface then K 2 S =3 and the bicanonical map is a morphism of degree 2.

We give explicit constructions of all the numerical Campedelli surfaces, i.e. the minimal surfaces of general type with K^2=2 and p_g=0 , whose fundamental group has order 9. Let S be a Campedelli surface (a minimal surface of general type with p g = 0, K 2 = 2), and $${\pi\colon Y\to S}$$ an etale cover of degree 8. We prove that the canonical model $${\overline {Y}}$$ of Y is a complete intersection of four quadrics $${\overline {Y}=Q_{1}\cap Q_{2}\cap Q_{3}\cap Q_{4}\subset\mathbb{P}^{6}}$$ . As a consequence, Y is the universal cover of S, the covering group G = Gal(Y/S) is the topological fundamental group π 1 S and G cannot be the dihedral group D 4 of order 8.
