Research findings comparing the work attitudes of full-time and part-time employees have been inconsistent and inconclusive. Furthermore, empirical studies have tended to be atheoretical, and there are few convincing psychological explanations to explain differences where found. This article tests the psychological contract as an explanatory framework for attitudinal differences across work status (i.e., whether employed on a part-time or full-time basis). The model is tested across samples from ...

Abstract The psychological contract has been viewed as an explanatory framework for understanding the employment relationship, and is regarded by some researchers as central in understanding employee attitudes and behavior. Despite the importance ascribed to the psychological contract, it remains theoretically underdeveloped and has received limited empirical attention. This study takes a new approach to researching the psychological contract, through the use of daily diaries, and addresses a number ...

The relationship between individual‐level organizational commitment and employee's performance has been the subject of considerable empirical investigation over several decades. We present results of a study examining the effects of unit‐level organizational commitment on the ...

Fiscal austerity is having major impacts on public service organizations, but little is known about the effects of these changes on employees' well-being, attitudes, and behaviors. We ask two questions: ...

The trace metals zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) are both involved in the metabolic processes of marine phytoplankton, and as such, both metals play important roles in ocean biogeochemical cycles. In Antarctica, the Amundsen Sea (AS) experiences rapid ice shelf melting, and the Amundsen Sea polynya (ASP) hosts seasonal phytoplankton blooms in austral summer, with important implications for atmospheric carbon dioxide drawdown. However, the effects of ice melting and phytoplankton blooms on the biogeochemistry ...

Seasonal phytoplankton blooms in the Antarctic Amundsen Sea Polynyas are thought to be supported by an external supply of iron (Fe) from circumpolar deep waters, benthic sediments, and/or ice shelf meltwaters. Summary Psychological contract research has typically focused on employees' perceptions of whether the organization has generally fulfilled or broken its promises/obligations. However, employees can experience broken and fulfilled promises as discrete events on an everyday basis, which may have immediate implications for employees and also influence their generalized psychological contract. Integrating attribution and appraisal theories of emotions, we argue that discrete psychological contract ...

Adenoviruses infect a wide range of vertebrates including humans. Their icosahedral capsids are composed of three major proteins: the trimeric hexon forms the facets and the penton, a noncovalent complex of the pentameric penton base and trimeric fibre proteins, is located at the 12 capsid vertices. Several proteins (IIIa, VI, VIII and IX) stabilise the capsid. We have obtained a 10 A resolution map of the human adenovirus 5 by image analysis from cryo-electron micrographs (cryoEMs). Many countries are facing the twin pressures of austerity and recession following the 2007–2008 global financial crisis. This paper uses the UK public sector and a major national announcement of budget cuts signalling extensive organizational cutbacks as its setting. We examine (a) whether organizational changes following the national announcement affect public sector employees' psychological contract breach, (b) whether employee reactions to psychological contract breach are consistent with the target ...

Dissolved iron (dFe) is an essential micronutrient for phytoplankton, with vanishingly low oceanic dissolved concentrations (pico- to nanomoles per kg) known to limit growth—and thus influence primary productivity and carbon cycling—over much of the surface ocean. However, because of the considerable challenges associated with contamination-free sample collection and accurate analysis of such low dFe concentrations, the first reliable dFe measurements came only in the 1980s. Further, by 2003, despite ...
