Toby Lowe, Rob Wilson,

Abstract This article presents the case for the need for a re‐think in the prevailing orthodoxy of measurement approaches in the governance and management of public services. The article explores the simplification of complex reality that outcomes‐based performance management (OBPM) requires in order to function, and the consequences of such simplification. It examines the evidence for and against the effectiveness of OBPM, and argues that both sets of evidence can be brought into a single explanatory ...

Programs encouraging exercise might reduce coronary illness. Ajzen's theory of planned behavior is a useful model for understanding exercise motivation. The current study investigated the contribution of the instrumental and affective components of attitude. As part of a community‐based study of exercise behavior, 424 men and 572 women completed questionnaires, with 365 participants providing 6‐month follow‐up data. Regressions highlighted the affective component as a much more powerful predictor ...

Different emotions are to some extent associated with different ways of coping. Cognitive processes involved in determining emotional reactions may influence coping (perhaps through directing attention or generating salient information). This study explored possible appraisal-coping associations by examining whether a set of appraisal components identified in emotion theory were also associated with coping. The study examined concurrent associations between appraisal components, emotional adjustment, ...

Previous research has focused on influences of coping on emotional and behavioural outcomes. Less is known about why people cope in the way they do. Drawing on an appraisal theory of emotion, it was expected that secondary appraisal components would be related to coping. Information on appraisal components, emotions, and coping in relation to a recent work stressor was provided by 107 female nurses. Appraisals were associated with coping in theoretically interpretable ways (e.g. active coping and ...

Two studies are reported. In the first, 69 undergraduate students were asked to complete a questionnaire in which they reported one stressful incident they had experienced in the previous four weeks, and the appraisals, core relational themes, and emotions they experienced at the time. Without warning, one week later they were asked to consider the same incident and report their appraisals and emotions. Only scores on two of 41 variables differed across occasions. Abstract. The overall structure of quasi-perpendicular, high Mach number collisionless shocks is controlled to a large extent by ion reflection at the shock ramp. Departure from a strictly one-dimensional structure is indicated by simulation results showing that the surface of such shocks is rippled, with variations in the density and all field components. We present a detailed analysis of these shock ripples, using results from a two-dimensional hybrid (particle ions, electron fluid) simulation. ...

Abstract Objectives: Patient education in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) aims to improve health outcomes by prompting people to adopt self‐management behaviours. One precursor for initiating behaviour change is self‐efficacy (SE), a belief that you can do a task. This study tested the sensitivity to change of a new scale to measure SE for self‐management in people with RA, the Rheumatoid Arthritis Self‐Efficacy scale (RASE). Exploratory analysis examined potential predictors of change in SE. Methods: People ...

The current study explored associations between previous physical activity and both implicit and explicit attitudes, as well as visual attention and activity motivation (intention). Analyses were performed on participants initially unaware of the physical activity focus of the study (N = 98). Higher levels of physical activity were associated with positive implicit attitudes and an attentional bias towards exercise cues. There was a quadratic ('U' shaped) relationship between implicit attitude and attention: ...

Rob Lowe, Alison Porter, Helen Snooks, Lori Button, Bridie Evans,

Objectives. Provision of unscheduled health care (e.g., emergency department, family doctor consultations, pharmacist) is aided by matching patients with the 'right service, first time'. However, service choice is usually made by patients and carers rather than service providers. The self-regulation model (SRM) posits that people cope in ways consistent with their illness understanding. The SRM was used to examine differences in people's use of primary, secondary, and community health care services ...
