This paper describes the design of an experiment to demonstrate the feasibly of operating a cascade of a Thermionic Energy Converter (TEC) with an Alkali Metal Thermo Electric Converter (AMTEC). Both of these devices convert heat to electricity without moving mechanical parts and lend themselves to be incorporated into a cascade. Typically, the TEC operates from a hot temperature of 2000 K to 1700 K, rejecting heat at 1100 K to 700 K, while the AMTEC operates from a hot temperature of 1100 K to 900 ...

Abstract Myriocoleopsis riparia Reiner & Gradst. sp. nov. is described and illustrated from S.E. Brazil and N.E. Argentina. It is the second species of the rheophytic South. American genus Myriocoleopsis Schiffn. to be described and is characterized by a thin stem with only 5 rows of cortical cells. A close relationship between Myriocoleopsis and Cololejeunea subgenus Protocolea is postulated.

Linear poly(p-phenylene)s are modestly active UV photocatalysts for hydrogen production in the presence of a sacrificial electron donor. Introduction of planarized fluorene, carbazole, dibenzo[b,d]thiophene or dibenzo[b,d]thiophene sulfone units greatly enhances the H2 evolution rate. The most active dibenzo[b,d]thiophene sulfone co-polymer has a UV photocatalytic activity that rivals TiO2, but is much more active under visible light. The dibenzo[b,d]thiophene sulfone co-polymer has an apparent ...

Throughout Europe and in a number of other industrialized countries, the coming decades have been predicted to feature an increase in the proportion of patients who are elderly. This has led to considerable concern with respect to financing the health care system and has also increased the concerns about the efficiency of health care. Integrating ageing and efficiency issues, this paper examines the effects of age on the cost-effectiveness of medical interventions and its impact on decision making. ...

Dissolved iron (dFe) is an essential micronutrient for phytoplankton, with vanishingly low oceanic dissolved concentrations (pico- to nanomoles per kg) known to limit growth—and thus influence primary productivity and carbon cycling—over much of the surface ocean. However, because of the considerable challenges associated with contamination-free sample collection and accurate analysis of such low dFe concentrations, the first reliable dFe measurements came only in the 1980s. Further, by 2003, despite ...

Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have been used as photocatalysts for hydrogen production from water in the presence of a sacrificial electron donor. The relative importance of the linker geometry, the co-monomer linker length, and the degree of planarisation were studied with respect to the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate.
