A critical role in place learning has been attributed to place cells within the cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) sector of the hippocampus in rodents. The role of CA1 cells in the human hippocampus with regard to place learning remains elusive. Using a virtual Morris water maze, we investigated patients with acute transient global amnesia (TGA), a rare self-limiting dysfunction of the hippocampal system. Fourteen individuals with selective and focal lesions in the CA1 sector of the hippocampus showed a profound ...

Cognitive function declines in parallel to the decrease in glomerular filtration rate, best epitomized by the markedly reduced cerebral performance in patients undergoing maintenance haemodialysis [chronic kidney disease stage 5 dialysis (CKD5D)]. Aside from structural permanent damage, there seems to be a reversible part of low cognitive performance. The potential effect of a single dialysis session on cognitive function remains still elusive. The aim of the study was to assess cognitive function ...

Selective realignment of the preferred magnetization direction in a laser micro structured GMR spin-valve layer system (Ni81Fe19/Co90Fe10/Cu/Co90Fe10/IrMn/Ni81Fe19) with a total film thickness of 23 nm was studied. For this, patterns of isolated microstructures (500 μm × 200 μm) were fabricated by laser ablation. These micropatterns were annealed using laser irradiation at a temperature above the IrMn Néel temperature. During laser annealing, the sample was subjected to an external magnetic field in ...

Globally increasing urbanization causes major anthropogenic changes in ecosystems, drastically altering phenotypes of organisms. Increased contamination is a well-known result of urbanization, and its effect on behaviour has been extensively studied. Yet, animal personality, consistent behavioural variation between individuals, has rarely been investigated in the context of anthropogenic contaminants. Changes in personalities may affect the viability of populations, and even alter community dynamics. ...

Abstract Passivated emitter and rear cell (PERC) solar cells are currently being introduced into mass production. In this paper, we report a novel PERC solar cell design that applies a screen‐printed rear Al finger grid instead of the conventional full‐area aluminum (Al) rear layer while using the same PERC manufacturing sequence. We name this novel cell concept PERC+ because it offers several advantages. In particular, the Al paste consumption of the PERC+ cells is drastically reduced to 0.15 g instead ...

Abstract We assessed the efficacy of simultaneous agonism at the glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor ( GLP ‐1R) and the melanocortin‐4 receptor ( MC 4R) for the treatment of obesity and diabetes in rodents. Diet‐induced obese ( DIO ) mice were chronically treated with either the long‐acting GLP ‐1R agonist liraglutide, the MC 4R agonist RM ‐493 or a combination of RM ‐493 and liraglutide. Co‐treatment of DIO mice with RM ‐493 and liraglutide improves body weight loss and enhances glycemic control and cholesterol ...

We report on selective realignment of the magnetization direction of the exchange biased ferromagnetic layer in two different spintronic layer stacks using laser radiation. The exchange bias effect occurs in an antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic bilayer system when cooled in an external magnetic field below the Néel temperature and results in a shift of the ferromagnetic hysteresis loop with increased coercivity. The effect is utilized to pin the magnetization direction of the reference ferromagnetic ...

GIPR:GLP-1R co-agonism improves obesity and cardio-metabolic disease with superior efficacy in both male and female mice compared to mono-agonism. We detected sex-specific differences in metabolic phenotypes, which may point to differing sensitivity for GLP-1R and/or GIPR in areas of the hypothalamus regulating energy balance (ARC, VMH, DMH) and in areas of the amygdala regulating cardiovascular functions. To optimize future therapeutic benefits and minimize side effects from a perspective of sex ...
