Traditional methods used to repair prestressed concrete (PC) girders subjected to impact damage due to overheight vehicles include strand splicing and external posttensioning. These methods have proven to be partially satisfactory in restoring the damaged girder's ultimate strength. The use of composite materials in the strengthening, rehabilitation, and repair industry has been gaining popularity due to their excellent material behavior and ease of application. Composites such as fiber-reinforced ...

Introduction: The controversy over the presence of empathic decline within the course in students of medicine, dentistry and health sciences in general, has not fully been studied. This controversy could be partially solved if massive studies of empathy levels are made in similar cultural, social and economic contexts.Material and Methods: Empathy levels within the course were studied in eighteen dental schools from six countries in Latin America (2013). The mean of the empathy levels were used to ...

Health care systems are classified as critical infrastructure systems when responding to disaster events. Physical damage to health care facilities or disruption of their operations or supply chains could prevent an effective response and aggravate the outcome of an emergency situation. Even if a hospital or public health facility were not directly affected by the disaster event, these facilities are required to operate efficiently during an emergency in order to manage a surge of capacity. When ...

Apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) is the strongest genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD), leading to earlier age of clinical onset and exacerbating pathologies. There is a critical need to identify protective targets. Recently, a rare APOE variant, APOE3-R136S (Christchurch), was found to protect against early-onset AD in a PSEN1-E280A carrier. In this study, we sought to determine if the R136S mutation also protects against APOE4-driven effects in LOAD. We generated tauopathy mouse ...

Objective: The aim of this study is to check whether there are differences in the distribution of empathy levels in dental students from nine faculties of dentistry Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Dominican Republic. Methods: The levels of empathy and matrices of empathy construct matrices are estimated dental students by using the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy, the Spanish version for students (S version) culturally validated in Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Dominican Republic measured ...

The use of homograft conduits to reconstruct right ventricle (RV) to pulmonary artery (PA) connections is an essential component of the Ross operation. Homograft availability and cost may be problematic when considering the Ross operation. We elected in January 1998 to utilize commercially available xenografts as an alternative to homografts for RV/PA reconstruction in the pediatric Ross operation. Our early results using the Medtronic Freestyle valve (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN) for RV/PA reconstruction ...

Infrastructure systems are essential to the operation of health care facilities and do not exist in isolation of one another—telecommunications networks require electricity, transportation networks require systems information to operate, emergency systems require transportation networks, and so forth. During a disaster event, health care facilities are expected to operate efficiently to provide sufficient care to injured patients. However, medical care for injured patients can be affected if health ...

The extracellular domain of mouse Notch1 contains 36 tandem epidermal growth factor-like (EGF) repeats, many of which are modified with O-fucose. Previous work from several laboratories has indicated that O-fucosylation plays an important role in ligand mediated Notch activation. Nonetheless, it is not clear whether all, or a subset, of the EGF repeats need to be O-fucosylated. Three O-fucose sites are invariantly conserved in all Notch homologues with 36 EGF repeats (within EGF repeats 12, 26, and ...

Ovarian carcinomas express the 60-kD heat-shock protein HSP-60 at widely varying levels in different tumors. The aim of this study was to determine whether there was a relationship between expression of HSP-60 and survival in patients with ovarian carcinoma.Total RNA and DNA were prepared from 51 epithelial ovarian cancer tissue samples. The expression and structure of the HSP-60 gene were examined by Northern and Southern blot analyses using the carboxyl-terminal portion of this gene as a probe ( ...

Abstract INTRODUCTION We discovered that the APOE3 Christchurch (APOE3Ch) variant may provide resistance to Alzheimer's disease (AD). This resistance may be due to reduced pathological interactions between ApoE3Ch and heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs). METHODS We developed and characterized the binding, structure, and preclinical efficacy of novel antibodies targeting human ApoE‐HSPG interactions. RESULTS We found that one of these antibodies, called 7C11, preferentially bound ApoE4, a major risk ...

The right timing of animal physiology and behaviour ensures the stability of populations and ecosystems. To predict anthropogenic impacts on these timings, more insight is needed into the interplay between environment and molecular timing mechanisms. This is particularly true in marine environments. Using high-resolution, long-term daylight measurements from a habitat of the marine annelid Platynereis dumerilii, we found that temporal changes in ultraviolet A (UVA)/deep violet intensities, more than ...

We report the sequence and analysis of the 814-megabase genome of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus , a model for developmental and systems biology. The sequencing strategy combined whole-genome shotgun and bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) sequences. This use of BAC clones, aided by a pooling strategy, overcame difficulties associated with high heterozygosity of the genome. The genome encodes about 23,300 genes, including many previously thought to be vertebrate innovations or known ...

Mutations in the NOTCH3 gene trigger adult-onset stroke and vascular dementia in patients with CADASIL (cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy). All CADASIL mutations described to date affect the epidermal growth factor-like (EGF-like) repeats located in the extracellular domain of the Notch3 receptor. These domains are also the target of sequential complex O-linked glycosylation mediated by protein O-fucosyltransferase 1 and Fringe. We investigated ...

Abstract Numerous studies have shown reduced performance in plants that are surrounded by neighbours of the same species 1,2 , a phenomenon known as conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD) 3 . A long-held ecological hypothesis posits that CNDD is more pronounced in tropical than in temperate forests 4,5 , which increases community stabilization, species coexistence and the diversity of local tree species 6,7 . Previous analyses supporting such a latitudinal gradient in CNDD 8,9 have suffered from ...

Frequent and widespread testing of members of the population who are asymptomatic for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is essential for the mitigation of the transmission of the virus. Despite the recent increases in testing capacity, tests based on quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays cannot be easily deployed at the scale required for population-wide screening. Here, we show that next-generation sequencing of pooled samples tagged with sample-specific ...

Previous research suggests that inflammation triggers cancer-treatment-related symptoms (i.e., fatigue, depression, and disruptions in sleep and physical activity), but evidence is mixed. This study examined relationships between inflammatory biomarkers and symptoms in patients with gynecologic cancer compared to age-matched women with no cancer history (i.e., controls). Patients (n = 121) completed assessments before chemotherapy cycles 1, 3, and 6, and 6 and 12 months later. Controls (n = 105) completed ...
