Acute osteomyelitis, soft-tissue infection, or both were experimentally produced in 38 New Zealand white rabbits, and three-phase technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate, gallium-67, and magnetic resonance (MR) images were obtained 7 or 14 days after infection. There was no significant difference between radionuclide studies and MR images in the detection of osteomyelitis, but MR imaging was significantly more sensitive (100% vs. 69%; P less than .01) in the detection of soft-tissue infection. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Staged keratotomy surgery, or "enhancement surgery," may allow a more predictable outcome, but also subjects the patient to additional surgical risks. METHODS: A 39-year-old man underwent astigmatic keratotomy for myopic astigmatism, followed by 12 enhancement procedures for residual astigmatism. RESULTS: These procedures effectively resulted in a double hexagonal keratotomy. The patient's best spectacle-corrected acuity deteriorated to counting fingers. Clinically, a conically- ...

Summary The analysis of exonic DNA from prostate cancers has identified recurrently mutated genes, but the spectrum of genome-wide alterations has not been profiled extensively in this disease. We sequenced the genomes of 57 prostate tumors and matched normal tissues to characterize somatic alterations and to study how they accumulate during oncogenesis and progression. By modeling the genesis of genomic rearrangements, we identified abundant DNA translocations and deletions that arise in a highly interdependent ...

Small cell carcinoma of the prostate is both morphologically and immunohistochemically similar to small cell carcinoma of other organs such as the urinary bladder or lung. TMPRSS2-ERG gene fusion appears to be a highly specific alteration in prostatic carcinoma that is frequently shared by small cell carcinoma. In adenocarcinoma, immunohistochemistry for the ERG protein product has been reported to correlate well with the presence of the gene fusion, although in prostatic small cell carcinoma, this ...

Illnesses transmitted by Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika comprise a considerable global burden; mosquito control is the primary public health tool to reduce disease transmission. Urothelial carcinomas demonstrate diverse morphologic and immunologic features that frequently lead to diagnostic challenges. Recent advances have identified a number of immunohistochemical stains that, when used in the context of a panel, can be a valuable tool in properly classifying primary urothelial carcinoma and carcinomas secondarily involving the urinary bladder. In addition, new biomarkers prove helpful in the staging of bladder carcinoma. In this article, we review the clinical utility ...

It is unclear whether asthma may affect susceptibility or severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in children and how pediatric asthma services worldwide have responded to the pandemic. To describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric asthma services and on disease burden in their patients. An online survey was sent to members of the Pediatric Asthma in Real Life think tank and the World Allergy Organization Pediatric Asthma Committee. It included questions on service provision, ...

SUMMARY Host exploitation induces host defence responses and competition between parasites, resulting in individual parasites facing highly variable environments. Alternative life strategies may thus be expressed in context-dependent ways, depending on which host species is used and intra-host competition between parasites. Coitocaecum parvum (Trematode) can use facultative progenesis in amphipod intermediate hosts, Paracalliope fluviatilis , to abbreviate its life cycle in response to such environmental ...

Apoptosis of cardiomyocytes is increased in heart failure and has been implicated in disease progression. The activation of "proapoptotic" caspases represents a key step in cardiomyocyte apoptosis. In contrast, the role of "proinflammatory" caspases (caspases 1, 4, 5, 11, 12) is unclear. Here, we study the cardiac function of caspase-1. Gene array analysis in a murine heart failure model showed upregulation of myocardial caspase-1. In addition, we found increased expression of caspase-1 protein in ...

(Cell 161, 1215–1228; May 21, 2015) Our paper presented an integrated sequencing analysis of clinical samples from advance prostate cancer patients. Parts of the findings were listed in Table S3, Mutations Identified in the 150 Cases. During the preparation of our table, we inadvertently mislabeled three gene names. In row 14118, 11-Sep should be SEPT11. In row 22306, 12-Sep should be SEPT12. In row 22927, 1-Mar should be MARCH1. These errors do not affect any conclusions of the paper, and the corrected ...

Toward development of a precision medicine framework for metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), we established a multi-institutional clinical sequencing infrastructure to conduct prospective whole-exome and transcriptome sequencing of bone or soft tissue tumor biopsies from a cohort of 150 mCRPC affected individuals. Aberrations of AR, ETS genes, TP53, and PTEN were frequent (40%–60% of cases), with TP53 and AR alterations enriched in mCRPC compared to primary prostate cancer. We ...

CD38, a druggable ectoenzyme, is involved in the generation of adenosine, which is implicated in tumour immune evasion. Its expression and role in prostate tumour-infiltrating immune cells (TIICs) have not been elucidated. Background Chronic sensory loss is a common and undertreated consequence of many forms of neurological injury. Emerging evidence indicates that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) delivered during tactile rehabilitation promotes recovery of somatosensation. Objective Here, we characterize the amount, intensity, frequency, and duration of VNS therapy paradigms to determine the optimal dosage for VNS-dependent enhancement of recovery in a model of peripheral nerve injury (PNI). Methods Rats underwent transection ...

Twenty-two patients with clinical findings consistent with osteomyelitis, soft-tissue infection, or both were studied with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging at 1.5 T. Another 15 patients with joint effusion but no clinical or laboratory signs of infection served as controls. Soft-tissue abscesses, osteomyelitis, joint and tendon sheath effusion, and cellulitis were well depicted on MR imaging, allowing the correct diagnosis of presence and extent of infection in all but two cases. MR imaging was as ...
