The cross-talk between the inflammatory complement system and hemostasis is becoming increasingly recognized. The interaction between complement C1q, initiation molecule of the classical pathway, and von Willebrand factor (vWF), initiator molecule of primary hemostasis, has been shown to induce platelet rolling and adhesion in vitro. As vWF disorders result in prolonged bleeding, a lack of C1q as binding partner for vWF might also lead to an impaired hemostasis. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate ...

Subcutaneous emphysema rarely causes significant adverse clinical consequences. Two patients had development of massive subcutaneous emphysema during positive-pressure ventilation that resulted in chest wall compression and respiratory failure. Drainage of the subcutaneous air produced dramatic improvement. Subcutaneous emphysema is potentially fatal in ventilated patients. Specific decompression of subcutaneous tissues is indicated in such extreme cases.

Abstract Changes in diurnal temperature range (DTR) over global land areas are compared from a broad range of independent data sets. All data sets agree that global‐mean DTR has decreased significantly since 1950, with most of that decrease occurring over 1960–1980. The since‐1979 trends are not significant, with inter‐data set disagreement even over the sign of global changes. Inter‐data set spread becomes greater regionally and in particular at the grid box level. Despite this, there is general ...

While there are obstacles to the exchange of long-term high temporal resolution precipitation data, there have been fewer barriers to the exchange of so-called 'indices'. These are derived from daily and sub-daily data and measure aspects of precipitation frequency, duration and intensity that could be used for the study of extremes. This paper outlines the history of the rationale and use of these indices, the types of indices that are frequently used and the advantages and pitfalls in analysing ...

• Two members of a family suffer from recurrent attacks of either vertigo or cerebellar incoordination. The occurrence of these two distinct types of attack in the same patient may reconcile the disparate features of previously reported cases of familial periodic ataxia. The finding of downbeating nystagmus suggests a medullary disturbance. As in a previously reported family, the attacks were relieved by acetazolamide.

Abstract Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is believed to play an important role in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. In the present study, we investigated the effect of the human amyloid precursor protein (APP) on the ER stress response in PC12 cells. Tunicamycin, an inhibitor of N ‐glycosylation, rapidly induced the expression of the ER‐resident chaperone Bip/grp78, a known target gene of the unfolded protein response. Prolonged treatment with tunicamycin (≥ 12 h) resulted in ...

Background Recent American Heart Association guidelines highlight the paucity of data on effectiveness and/or mechanisms underlying use of beta-adrenergic receptor (beta AR) antagonists after acute coronary syndromes in patients subsequently undergoing revascularization. It is important to assess whether beta AR antagonists might protect the heart and improve ventricular function in this scenario. The authors therefore used esmolol (an ultra-short-acting beta AR antagonist) to determine whether beta ...

Driven by changes to policies of governments and funding agencies, Open Access to content and data is quickly becoming the prevailing model in academic publishing. Open Access benefits scientists with greater dissemination and citation of their work, and provides society as a whole with access to the latest research. Open Access is, however, only one facet of scholarly communication. Core scientific statements or assertions are intertwined and hidden in the scholarly narratives, and the data underlying ...
