Thin films of bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PC) were progressively crystallized in a controllable manner under the action of an appropriate plasticizing agent. No conducting layer was applied to the polymer surface, so that imaging with the atomic force microscope (AFM) left the sample exposed for additional plasticizer treatment. The PC sample was observed many times throughout the crystallization process using the AFM in both the contact and tapping modes. Data regarding the growth process for spherulites ...

Abstract Mazur’s theorem states that there are exactly fifteen possibilities for the torsion subgroup of an elliptic curve over the rational numbers. We determine how often each of these groups actually occurs. Precisely, if G is one of these fifteen groups, we show that the number of elliptic curves up to height X whose torsion subgroup is isomorphic to G is on the order of X 1 / d {X^{1/d}} , for some number d = = d ( G ) which we compute.

We determine the shapes of pure cubic fields and show that they fall into two families based on whether the field is wildly or tamely ramified (of Type I or Type II in the sense of Dedekind). We show that the shapes of Type I fields are rectangular and that they are equidistributed, in a regularized sense, when ordered by discriminant, in the one-dimensional space of all rectangular lattices. We do the same for Type II fields, which are however no longer rectangular. We obtain as a corollary of the ...

We compute the arithmetic ${\cal L}$-invariants (of Greenberg-Benois) of twists of symmetric powers of $p$-adic Galois representations attached to Iwahori level Hilbert modular forms (under some technical conditions). Our method uses the automorphy of symmetric powers and the study of analytic Galois representations on $p$-adic families of automorphic forms over symplectic and unitary groups. Combining these families with some explicit plethysm in the representation theory of ${\rm GL}(2)$, we construct global ...

Acute tubulointerstitial nephritis is demonstrated in 2–3% of all native renal biopsies, increasing to 10–15% if the biopsy is performed in the setting of acute renal failure [1]. It is most commonly related to medication or infection [1,2]. An increasingly recognized entity is tubulointerstitial nephritis with uveitis (TINU) syndrome. We outline the clinical course of a patient with TINU syndrome and review the changes in epidemiology, diagnosis and management.

We prove the exceptional zero conjecture for the symmetric powers of complex multiplication cuspidal eigenforms at ordinary primes. In other words, we determine the trivial zeros of the associated p-adic L-functions, compute the L-invariants, and show that they agree with Greenberg’s L-invariants. In the appendix, we prove a functional equation for some of the p-adic L-functions we construct.

We interpolate the Gauss–Manin connection in p-adic families of nearly overconvergent modular forms. This gives a family of Maass–Shimura type differential operators from the space of nearly overconvergent modular forms of type r to the space of nearly overconvergent modular forms of type r+1 with p-adic weight shifted by 2. Our construction is purely geometric, using Andreatta–Iovita–Stevens and Pilloni’s geometric construction of eigencurves, and should thus generalize to higher rank groups.

Let f be a cuspidal newform with complex multiplication (CM) and let p be an odd prime at which f is non-ordinary. We construct admissible p-adic L-functions for the symmetric powers of f, thus verifying conjectures of Dabrowski and Panchishkin in this special case. We combine this with recent work of Benois to prove the trivial zero conjecture in this setting. We also construct “mixed” plus and minus p-adic L-functions and prove an analogue of Pollack’s decomposition of the admissible p-adic L-functions. ...

Summary Alinidine (2.9 ± 0.7 mg/kg) prevented an adrenaline-induced ventricular arrhythmia in dogs respired with halothane. In ouabain-induced ventricular tachycardia, a cumulative dose of alinidine (15.5 mg/kg) reduced the number of ventricular beats by 91.6 ± 1.9%. The drug was much less effective in abolishing the ventricular tachycardia 24 h after ligation of a coronary artery, with only a 36 ± 15% reduction in ventricular ectopic beats after 15.5 mg/kg. The administration of alinidine (0.5–1.0 mg/kg) ...

In Pollack and Stevens (Ann Sci Éc Norm Supér 44(1):1–42, 2011), efficient algorithms are given to compute with overconvergent modular symbols. These algorithms then allow for the fast computation of p-adic L-functions and have further been applied to compute rational points on elliptic curves (e.g. Darmon and Pollack in Israel J Math 153:319–354, 2006, Trifkovic in Duke Math J 135(3):415–453, 2006). In this paper, we generalize these algorithms to the case of families of overconvergent modular symbols. ...

Sorghum is a genus of plant in the grass family, which is used for both grain and forage production throughout the world. In the United States, sorghum grain is predominantly used as livestock feed, and in ethanol production. In recent years however, sorghum grain has been investigated for other industrial applications, including gluten free food sources for the US food market, and waxes. The United States is the world's largest producer of grain sorghum, which is grown in the arid regions of the ...

Rilmenidine is a novel oxazoline derivative that is effective in the treatment of hypertension. Studies in animals have indicated that rilmenidine may reduce blood pressure without the associated central alpha 2 side effects of clonidine. The aim of this double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled study was to evaluate the hypotensive and central sedative effects of single oral doses of rilmenidine (1 or 2 mg), clonidine (150 or 300 micrograms), and lorazepam (2.5 mg) in 12 healthy male volunteers. ...

Abstract Carotenoids are potentially valuable components in grain sorghum and there is a need to better understand their concentration, composition, and value. Thirteen modern commercial grain sorghum hybrids and five sorghum lines were extracted and analyzed and the levels of oil and carotenoids were compared. The same samples were also evaluated for lipolytic enzyme activity. The oil content in all eighteen samples ranged from 3.21 to 4.29 wt%. Lutein and zeaxanthin were the predominant carotenoids ...

Thin films of uncoated bisphenol-A-polycarbonate (PC) were progressively crystallized in a controllable manner under the action of butyl acetate. The PC sample was imaged using AFM in both the contact and tapping modes throughout the crystallization process. Data regarding the growth process for spherulites in addition to high resolution morphology studies were achieved.

Summary: The effects of a long-acting formulation of pinacidil (P1134), a new arteriolar vasodilator, have been investigated in normal humans. We observed the effects of pinacidil 37.5 mg when given alone, and when given in combination with propranolol 40 mg. The reflex tachycardia observed in the supine and standing positions after pinacidil was reduced by concurrent administration of propranolol. Combined treatment reduced systolic arterial pressure in the standing position from 117.0 ± 2.5 to 98. ...

Commercial waxes are difficult to analyze due to their limited solubility in most organic solvents. Recently, our laboratory published a new reverse phase HPLC-MS method using a C30 column, a gradient of methanol and chloroform, an evaporative light-scattering detector (ELSD), and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (APCI-MS) to analyze jojoba wax (jojoba oil), carnauba wax, and sorghum wax. In the current study, the published HPLC method was modified by reducing the solvent ...
