Brock Schnebel, Scott Kingston, Robert G. Watkins, William H. Dillin,

Retrospectively, the MR (magnetic resonance) and contrast CT (computed tomography examinations of 41 patients (123 segments) were objectively scored to evaluate spinal stenosis and disc degeneration. Five categories to evaluate stenosis included the facet joint, foramina, central canal, disc on sagittal section, and disc on axial section. In addition, the ability to demonstrate spondylolysis was compared. The examinations were interpreted by a single observer blinded to the results. Comparisons show ...

There is evidence that the gene for the B isozyme of creatine kinase is regulated during cell differentiation, is under hormonal control, and is activated in a small cell lung carcinoma. In order to investigate further the mechanisms of these processes, the human gene was isolated and the structure of the promoter region was determined. A human DNA fragment of 8 kilobase pairs was shown to encompass the entire coding region and 850 base pairs (bp) of the 5'-flanking sequence. This fragment was transfected ...

One hundred and one disc levels in 36 patients with low-back pain were studied with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (T2-weighted) sagittal images and conventional roentgenographic discography to detect early disc degeneration. Thirty-nine discs also were evaluated after discography with roentgenographic CT MRI findings were compared with discography results. MRI was 99% accurate in predicting normality or abnormality as determined by discography. Changes in disc signal on MRI accurately reflected ...

Detailed phenotyping is required to deepen our understanding of the biological mechanisms behind genetic associations. In addition, the impact of potentially modifiable risk factors on disease requires analytical frameworks that allow causal inference. Here, we discuss the characteristics of Recall-by-Genotype (RbG) as a study design aimed at addressing both these needs. We describe two broad scenarios for the application of RbG: studies using single variants and those using multiple variants. We ...

This work demonstrates a novel approach to mass spectrometry using the "virtual-slit" created by the small, localized volume from which ions are generated by localized ionization techniques such as laser ionization of particles and surfaces, and spark ionization. That is, the volume in which the ions are generated creates a localized source of ions in much the same way as a slit that allows only ions from a specific cross sectional area to pass. As demonstrated in this work, the unique perfect focusing ...

Future space telescopes require primary mirrors that are much lighter than those currently being manufactured. They also must maintain optical tolerances while operating at cryogenic temperatures. We present a Mirror System Demonstrator for the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) that uses a thin glass facesheet with active control to achieve low mass and high surface quality. A 2-mm thick glass facesheet is controlled by miniature actuators and held together by a rigid carbon fiber frame. The ...
