Dynamic contrast material-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging may be used to quantify fractional blood volume (fBV) and microvascular permeability in human brain tumors. Hypothesis is that these measurements correlate with tumor histologic grade and immunohistologically assessed mitotic activity.Thirty-eight patients with newly diagnosed gliomas underwent MR imaging consisting of dynamic three-dimensional spoiled gradient-recalled acquisition in the steady state image sets following bolus injections ...

As discussed in the accompanying paper [Markland, W., Ley, A. C., & Ladner, R. C. (1996) Biochemistry 35, 8045−8057], we generated libraries from the first Kunitz domain of human lipoprotein-associated coagulation inhibitor (LACI-D1) using multivalent M13 III display and derived potent inhibitors of human plasmin (PLA) by iterative variegation and selection. Here, we show that high-affinity, high-specificity binders to human plasma kallikrein (pKAL) and human thrombin (THBN) can be obtained starting from ...

Propofol sedation offers advantages for titration and rapid emergence in the critically ill patient, but concern for adverse hemodynamic effects potentially limits its use in these patients. The current study compares the cardiovascular effects of sedation with propofol versus midazolam during the first 12 h after coronary revascularization.Three hundred fifty-one patients undergoing coronary revascularization were anesthetized using a standardized sufentanil/midazolam regimen, and assigned randomly ...

The properties of an intramolecular triplex formed in vitro at the 5′-flanking region of the human γ-globin genes were studied by chemical and physical probes. Chemical modifications performed with osmium tetroxide, chloroacetaldehyde, and diethyl pyrocarbonate revealed the presence of non-paired nucleotides on the “coding strand” at positions −209 through −217. These reactivities were induced by negative supercoiling, low pH, and magnesium ions. Downstream point mutations associated with hereditary ...

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the use of simultaneous hip and knee arthroplasty compared to staged procedures in patients with bilateral pathology. The aim of this study was to compare simultaneous and staged hip and knee arthroplasty in patients with bilateral pathology by assessing the transfusion rate, postoperative hemoglobin drop, length of stay (LOS), in-hospital complications, 30-day readmissions and early functional outcome. We conducted a retrospective cohort study ...

The applicability of next generation DNA sequencing (NGS) methods for water quality assessment has so far not been broadly investigated. This study set out to evaluate the potential of an NGS-based approach in a complex catchment with importance for drinking water abstraction. In this multi-compartment investigation, total bacterial communities in water, faeces, soil, and sediment samples were investigated by 454 pyrosequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicons to assess the capabilities of this ...

Abstract Background In a recent report of large-scale association analysis, a type 2 diabetes susceptibility locus near HNF1A was identified in predominantly European descent populations. A population-specific G319S polymorphism in HNF1A was previously identified in Aboriginal Canadians who have a high prevalence of type 2 diabetes. We aimed to investigate the association of the HNF1A G319S polymorphism with incident type 2 diabetes and to assess whether clinical risk variables for type 2 diabetes ...

The 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpm) adducts of the β-diketonate complexes of Eu(III), Sm(III), or Yb(III) with 2,2′,6,6′-tetramethyl-2,4-heptanedione (tmhd) resulted in the formation of dinuclear species. The synthesis and X-ray structure of these three new dinuclear lanthanide complexes are found to be similar. Each lanthanide ion is eight coordinate, bound to six O-atoms from the β-diketonates and 2N atoms from the bridging bpm ligand. They exhibit Ln–Ln distances (Sm(III): 6.935 Å, Eu(III): 6.901 Å, Yb( ...
