Abstract We report the use of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with a DNA library of chromosome 1‐specific probes to confirm the karyotype, 46,XY,15, + der15,t(1;15)(q32.1; q26.3), obtained by prenatal periumbilical blood sampling from a fetus who exhibited multiple abnormalities by ultrasound examination. GTG‐banding of chromosomes obtained from the mother showed a normal karyotype, while the father was unavailable for study. The propositus was born at 37 weeks gestation and survived for several ...

As part of a project to characterise and quantify the volume of sediments which comprise the Holocene (10,000 years to present) fill of the Humber Estuary, a study was undertaken to determine the geochemistry and heavy mineralogy of bed sediments in the river systems that discharge into the estuary. A total of 19 sediment samples in the Trent and Ouse river systems were taken for analysis. Contamination was evaluated by comparison of the sample geochemistry with that of the appropriate catchment ( ...

In this paper, the effect of cloud structure on column absorption by water vapor is investigated. Radiative fluxes above and below horizontally inhomogeneous liquid water clouds are computed using an efficient Monte Carlo technique, the independent pixel approximation, and plane-parallel theory. Cloud inhomogeneity is simulated by two related fractal models that use bounded cascades for the horizontal distribution of optical depth. The first ("clumpy") model has constant cloud top and base, hence ...

The molecular basis for Marfan's syndrome (MS), a heritable disorder of connective tissue, is now known to reside in mutations in FBN1, the gene for fibrillin-1. Classic phenotypic manifestations of MS include several skeletal abnormalities associated primarily with overgrowth of long bones. As a first step towards understanding how mutations in FBN1 result in skeletal abnormalities, the developmental expression of fibrillin-1 (Fib-1) in human skeletal tissues is documented using immunohistochemistry ...

Since the work of Tower in the 1950s, we have come to expect lower neuron density in the cerebral cortex of larger brains. We studied dolphin brains varying from 783 to 6215g. As expected, average neuron density in four areas of cortex decreased from the smallest to the largest brain. Despite having a lower neuron density than smaller dolphins, the killer whale has more gray matter and more cortical neurons than any mammal, including humans. To begin a study of non-dolphin toothed whales, we measured ...

The antimalarial activity of chemically diverse compounds, including the clinical candidate cipargamin, has been linked to the ATPase PfATP4 in the malaria-causing parasite Plasmodium falciparum . The characterization of PfATP4 has been hampered by the inability thus far to achieve its functional expression in a heterologous system. Here, we optimized a membrane ATPase assay to probe the function of PfATP4 and its chemical sensitivity. We found that cipargamin inhibited the Na + -dependent ATPase activity ...

Most of the sky has been imaged with NOAO's telescopes from both hemispheres. While the large majority of these data were obtained for PI-led projects and almost all of the images are publicly available, only a small fraction have been released to the community via well-calibrated and easily accessible catalogs. We are remedying this by creating a catalog of sources from most of the public data taken on the CTIO-4m+DECam and the KPNO-4m+Mosaic3. This catalog, called the NOAO Source Catalog (NSC), ...

Abstract Background The incidence of skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs), for which human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a significant risk factor, in United States emergency departments (EDs) increased dramatically after 2000 with the emergence of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Few studies have examined SSTI incidence among HIV-infected and non–HIV-infected patients in the United States after 2010. Methods Data were obtained for patient encounters at all academic ...

Structural imaging based on MRI is an integral component of the clinical assessment of patients with potential dementia. We here propose an individualized Gaussian process-based inference scheme for clinical decision support in healthy and pathological aging elderly subjects using MRI. The approach aims at quantitative and transparent support for clinicians who aim to detect structural abnormalities in patients at risk of Alzheimer's disease or other types of dementia. Firstly, we introduce a generative ...

A relationship between the electrical activation of Si in ion-implanted In0.53Ga0.47As and material microstructure after ion implantation is demonstrated. By altering specimen temperature during ion implantation to control material microstructure, it is advanced that increasing sub-amorphizing damage (point defects) from Si+ implantation results in enhanced electrical activation of Si in In0.53Ga0.47As by providing a greater number of possible sites for substitutional incorporation of Si into the ...

This article proposes a new measure called Apparent Fibre Density (AFD) for the analysis of high angular resolution diffusion-weighted images using higher-order information provided by fibre orientation distributions (FODs) computed using spherical deconvolution. AFD has the potential to provide specific information regarding differences between populations by identifying not only the location, but also the orientations along which differences exist. The upwelling events that follow strong trade wind episodes have been described in terms of their remarkable signature in the sea surface temperature southwest off New Caledonia. Upwelling brings deeper, and colder waters to the surface, causing 2-4 degrees C drops in temperature in a few hours, followed by a slower relaxation over several days. Upwelling may sporadically bring nutrients to the surface under certain conditions, and increase the biological productivity. Two multidisciplinary hydrographic ...
