The human heart is highly vulnerable to rejection. In 16 patients with 17 allografts rejection progressed relentlessly in histocompatibility matches of C and D grades. Only three patients were still living, 63 to 181 days after transplantation, at the time of this report. The longest survival was 203 days. Signs of rejection were an increase in congestive heart failure, pericardial friction rub, electrocardiographic changes, malaise and a rise in the serum lactate dehydrogenase-1 level. Immunosuppression ...

Death rates by specific causes vary across the 50 states and the District of Columbia.* Information on differences in rates for the leading causes of death among states might help state health officials determine prevention goals, priorities, and strategies. CDC analyzed National Vital Statistics System data to provide national and state-specific estimates of potentially preventable deaths among the five leading causes of death in 2014 and compared these estimates with estimates previously published ...

We describe a convergent synthesis of the MRSA β-methyl carbapenem 1, wherein the molecule is assembled from the naphthosultam side chain 2 and the allylic carbonate of the β-Me carbapenem piece 6. The β-Me stereochemistry of 6 is set up in a novel titanium enolate addition into the TBDMS acetoxy azetidinone 5. The benzenesulfonate salt of 1 is endowed with exceptional stability.

ABSTRACT Coronaviruses are assembled by budding into a pre-Golgi compartment from which they are transported along the secretory pathway to leave the cell. In cultured epithelial cells, they are released in a polarized fashion; depending on the virus and cell type, they are sorted preferentially either to the apical domain or to the basolateral plasma membrane domain. In this study, we investigated the role of the coronavirus spike protein, because of its prominent position in the virion the prime ...

Abstract The rate of 3H-thymidine incorporation into circulating peripheral blood lymphocytes was measured immediately after isolation from the blood of 24 organ allograft recipients followed serially, and 42 normal control subjects. The isotope incorporation by 106 cells incubated for 2 hr with 2 µCi of 3H-thymidine was referred to as the activated lymphocyte level. It was 319 ± 295 (mean ± standard deviation) counts per minute (cpm) in the normal controls, 535 ± 377 cpm in the patients prior to grafting, ...

The studies presented in this Conference illustrate some of the newer aspects of the immune response to infection with influenza virus and vaccination with inactivated vaccines. The predominant immunoglobulin in respiratory secretions is an 11S IgA dimer that is distinguishable from serum IgA. Intranasal immunization with inactivated vaccines resulted in higher titers and greater duration of antibody in respiratory secretions than did subcutaneous vaccination. In addition, if given in adequate dosages, ...

Summary Antiserum prepared in rabbits against nasal washings of adult male volunteers has identified by immunoelectrophoresis six intrinsic components in nasal secretions in addition to the plasma proteins previously identified. Lysozyme activity was associated with one of these components, named on the basis of its electrophoretic characteristics, the N.W. γ2 component. Further characterization of nasal secretion lysozyme demonstrated that it is a basic protein of low molecular weight with sedimentation ...

Rossen's career-ended by his death at 57 early this year-was never, it seems to me, seen for what it was. Generally successful commercially, except for several years of blacklisting in the fifties, his work was never recognized as a unified artistic achievement-one rather strikingly parallels the growth of the art of the film itself. is a body of work reflects a consistent, yet changing and deepening, personal point of view, and one reflects, also, a willingness to grow, change and even dare in ...

The discussion includes implications for further research and study on parents, parenting, and the parent ...

Abstract Studies of cancer cell migration have found two modes: one that is protease-independent, requiring micron-sized pores or channels for cells to squeeze through, and one that is protease-dependent, relevant for confining nanoporous matrices such as basement membranes (BMs). However, many extracellular matrices exhibit viscoelasticity and mechanical plasticity, irreversibly deforming in response to force, so that pore size may be malleable. Here we report the impact of matrix plasticity on ...

The role of changes in resistance vessel tone in the acute coronary hemodynamic effect of smoking has not been examined. Methods. Twenty- ...

Many poisonous organisms carry small-molecule toxins that alter voltage-gated sodium channel (NaV) function. Among these, batrachotoxin (BTX) from Pitohui poison birds and Phyllobates poison frogs stands out because of its lethality and unusual effects on NaV function. How these toxin-bearing organisms avoid autointoxication remains poorly understood. In poison frogs, a NaV DIVS6 pore-forming helix N-to-T mutation has been proposed as the BTX resistance mechanism. Here, we show that this variant is ...
