David Whitcomb, Bernie Devlin and colleagues report the results of a genome-wide association study of pancreatitis. They identify common variants at two loci associated with risk of this disease, including one on the X chromosome that shows strong evidence of interaction with alcohol consumption. Pancreatitis is a complex, progressively destructive inflammatory disorder. Alcohol was long thought to be the primary causative agent, but genetic contributions have been of interest since the discovery ...

Abstract Background We showed excellent adherence and satisfaction with our telehealth care (TC) approach for COPD. Here, the results of a consecutive randomized controlled trial are presented. Methods Patients were randomly assigned to TC or standard care (SC). During TC, patients answered six daily questions online, and focused on the early recognition of exacerbations, in addition to SC. Results The mean increase in COPD assessment test (CAT) was 1.8 vs. 3.6 points/year in the TC and SC groups, ...

Regulatory T (Treg) cells are crucial for immune homeostasis, but they also contribute to tumor immune evasion by promoting a suppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). Mice with Treg cell-restricted Neuropilin-1 deficiency show tumor resistance while maintaining peripheral immune homeostasis, thereby providing a controlled system to interrogate the impact of intratumoral Treg cells on the TME. Using this and other genetic models, we showed that Treg cells shaped the transcriptional landscape across ...

The aim was to determine the accuracy of product labels, and to identify known hepatotoxins. Using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry to assay 272 product, 51% were found to be mislabeled; that is, to have chemical contents that did not match the label. A series of food safety incidents has led to low levels of trust in the safety of domestically produced Chinese infant milk formula. Concerned parents in China increasingly source ‘foreign-produced’ brands and use a range of authenticity cues as assurance of the safety and authenticity of infant formula products. However, the effectiveness of authenticity cues in providing assurance to Chinese consumers has not been evaluated. The aim of this study is to analyse the importance of various authenticity ...

Background/Aims Persistent incidents of food fraud in China have resulted in low levels of consumer trust in the authenticity and safety of food that is domestically produced. We examined the relationship between the concerns of Chinese consumers regarding food fraud, and the role that demonstrating authenticity may play in relieving those concerns. Methods A two-stage mixed method design research design was adopted. First, qualitative research (focus groups n = 7) was conducted in three Chinese cities, ...

Study objective For out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, authoritative, evidence-based recommendations have been made for regionalization of postarrest care. However, system-wide implementation of these guidelines has not been evaluated. Our hypothesis is that statewide regionalization of postarrest interventions, combined with emergency medical services (EMS) triage bypass, is associated with improved survival and neurologic outcome. Methods This was a prospective before-after observational study comparing ...

Mechanical injury of neurites accompanied by rupture of mitochondrial membranes may lead to immediate nonspecific release and spreading of pro-apoptotic factors and activation of proteases, that is, execution of apoptotic program. In the current work, we studied the time course of the major biomarkers of apoptosis as they are induced by exposure of rat cortical neurons to mechanical stretch. By using transmission electron microscopy, we found that mitochondria in the neurites were damaged early ( ...

Research on low-temperature atmospheric plasma sources (LTAPS) has grown strongly over the last few years, in part driven by possible medical 'in vivo' applications. LTAPS offer new technology for medicine and biomedical engineering. Important application examples include in situ production of reactive molecules and ions, delivery at the molecular level, contact-free and self-sterilizing devices. An important issue is the efficient bactericidal effect of LTAPS, which has already been studied widely ...

Extracellular serpins such as antithrombin and α1-antitrypsin are the quintessential regulators of proteolytic pathways. In contrast, the biological functions of the intracellular serpins remain obscure. We now report that the C. elegans intracellular serpin, SRP-6, exhibits a prosurvival function by blocking necrosis. Minutes after hypotonic shock, srp-6 null animals underwent a catastrophic series of events culminating in lysosomal disruption, cytoplasmic proteolysis, and death. This newly defined ...

The degeneracy of the yellow 1S orthoexcitons in Cu2O is lifted by wave vector dependent electron-hole exchange. This interaction scales quadratically with k and strongly depends on the direction of the wave vector. Therefore it is interpreted as an anisotropic correction of the effective exciton mass. This can explain the discrepancies in the measurements of the exciton mass in Cu2O reported so far. (© 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

The exchange interaction for the yellow 1S orthoexciton in Cu2O is derived up to the order K2. The resulting exchange splittings are verified experimentally using high resolution spectroscopy. In agreement with theory the fine structure shows a characteristic dependence on the direction of the wave vector.

A case of Spitz's nevus with eosinophilic globules was examined using antibodies for several components of the basement membrane. Aggregated tumor cells revealed the same characteristics as normal nevocytic nevi, that is, they were surrounded by laminin and type-IV collagen, whereas type-VII collagen was absent. All of these components of basement membranes, including type-VII collagen, were also found in eosinophilic globules, which were densely stained by these antibodies. It is assumed that these ...

Abstract Motivation: Image analysis, machine learning and statistical modeling have become well established for the automatic recognition and comparison of the subcellular locations of proteins in microscope images. By using a comprehensive set of features describing static images, major subcellular patterns can be distinguished with near perfect accuracy. The optical properties of semiconductors are strongly influenced by carriers, which have been injected by a pump pulse. We investigate this effect by studying the amplitude and phase of the light field reflected from a ZnSe layer, applying the method of phase-resolved spectral interferometry. While there are only weak changes in the amplitude with increasing excitation, the phase changes drastically. In the case of the nonexcited sample the phase exhibits a global change at the heavy hole-exciton ...

Significance Three-stranded R-loop structures form during transcription when the nascent RNA transcript rehybridizes to the template DNA strand. This creates an RNA:DNA hybrid and forces the nontemplate DNA strand into a single-stranded, looped-out state. R-loops form universally over conserved hotspot regions. To date, the physicochemical bases underlying R-loop formation remain unclear. Using a “first-principle” mathematical approach backed by experimental validation, we elucidated the relative ...

In Escherichia coli DNA replication yields interlinked chromosomes. Controlling topological changes associated with replication and returning the newly replicated chromosomes to an unlinked monomeric state is essential to cell survival. In the absence of the topoisomerase topoIV, the site-specific recombination complex XerCD- dif-FtsK can remove replication links by local reconnection. We previously showed mathematically that there is a unique minimal pathway of unlinking replication links by reconnection ...
