Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine lung function and bronchodilator responsiveness in infants with a history of prematurity and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), using the raised volume rapid thoracoabdominal compression technique as well as with whole‐body plethysmography. Spirometric measurements were obtained in 28 infants with a history of BPD, defined as preterm birth with O 2 requirement at 36 weeks postmenstrual age (gestational age at birth, 26.4 ± 2.1 weeks, mean ± SD; birthweight, ...

Studies have demonstrated that application of stress suppresses airway smooth muscle contractility. In animal models of asthma, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) reduced airway reactivity. Short-term studies of CPAP in patients with asthma showed reductions in airway reactivity. To evaluate whether nocturnal CPAP decreased the provocative concentration of methacholine to reduce FEV1 by 20% (PC20).One hundred ninety-four individuals with asthma were randomized (1:1:1) to use CPAP with warmed, ...

Murine interleukin-4 (IL-4) exhibits potent antitumor activity when present at the site of tumor cell challenge. Associated with tumor cell death is the appearance of an inflammatory infiltrate comprised predominantly of eosinophils and macrophages, but with few lymphocytes. Antibodies that specifically block the accumulation of granulocytes at the site of inflammation were injected in vivo to define the cell type responsible for the antitumor action of IL-4. These studies implicate eosinophils in ...

Health-care systems vary among countries and we were interested in how this might impact on gastroenterology manpower. We assessed the number of gastroenterologists in Canada and compared this with four countries where data were available over the Internet in either French or English. The number of gastroenterologists per 100,000 of the population was 3.9 in the United States, 3.48 in France, 2.1 in Australia, 1.83 in Canada, and 1.41 in the U.K. This variation in number of gastroenterologists was ...

Abstract Objective To evaluate the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of eptinezumab 100 and 300 mg compared with placebo in patients with the dual diagnosis of chronic migraine (CM) and medication‐overuse headache (MOH). Background Eptinezumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting calcitonin gene‐related peptide, may be effective for treating patients with a dual diagnosis of CM and MOH. Methods PROMISE‐2 (NCT02974153) was a double‐blind, randomized, placebo‐controlled, phase 3 study that comprised ...

Ajulemic acid, a side-chain analog of Δ8-THC-11-oic acid, was designed as a potent therapeutic agent free of the psychotropic adverse effects typical of most cannabinoids. Subsequent studies of ajulemic acid have yielded widely divergent findings on the occurrence of these adverse effects. To help resolve these discrepancies, we have prepared highly purified ajulemic acid using a different synthetic method than previously reported in the literature and compared its cannabinoid receptor binding constants ...

Serotonin syndrome, or serotonin toxicity (ST), is a clinical condition that occurs as a result of an iatrogenic drug-induced increase in intrasynaptic serotonin levels primarily resulting in activation of serotonin2A receptors in the central nervous system. The severity of symptoms spans a spectrum of toxicity that correlates with the intrasynaptic serotonin concentration. Although numerous drugs have been implicated in ST, life-threatening cases generally occur only when monoamine oxidase inhibitors ...

Abstract: Oral implantology is an established subspecialty of restorative dental and oral surgery. While an extensive body of evidence on the fundamentals of osseointegration and associated factors has been published, marketing‐oriented analyses based on representative public opinion polls of implant acceptance, patient‐perceived cost and patient satisfaction are scarce. In this study, an attempt was made to address these points by questioning a representative sample of 1000 adults in the household ...

Abstract: A variety of potential complications associated with sinus lift surgery have been reported in the literature. However, potential alterations of voice quality following sinus elevation have so far not been mentioned or evaluated scientifically. For the majority of patients, slight changes of the voice pattern are of no importance. However, for voice professionals, whose voices have become part of their distinctive profession or trademark, minimal changes may have dramatic consequences. ...

Tissue ischemia remains a common problem in plastic surgery and one for which proangiogenic approaches have been investigated. Given the recent discovery of circulating endothelial stem or progenitor cells that are able to form new blood vessels, the authors sought to determine whether these cells might selectively traffic to regions of tissue ischemia and induce neovascularization. Endothelial progenitor cells were isolated from the peripheral blood of healthy human volunteers and expanded ex vivo ...

Abstract: The number of dental implants inserted annually worldwide has been estimated to come close to a million. But the level of information available to patients about realistic, evidence‐based treatment options by implants is often enough more than fragmentary, and what is disseminated by the media and the industry does not always reflect evidence‐based empirical data. This survey of 1000 adults presented with 18 questions was designed to shed light on several points. These were (1) level of ...

Abstract: Sinus lifting is performed with a variety of materials and techniques without a precise knowledge of the quantity of augmentation. This study based on three‐dimensional finite element analysis was designed to show which surgical procedure and which amount of peri‐implant packing yields the best bony support for dental implants. Eight 3D‐FE models were used. Four modeled standard situations simulated quantitatively different packing situations produced by differences in surgical approach: ...

Background— The recent discovery of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) has altered our understanding of new blood vessel growth such as occurs during collateral formation. Because diabetic complications occur in conditions in which EPC contributions have been demonstrated, EPC dysfunction may be important in their pathophysiology. Methods and Results— EPCs were isolated from human type II diabetics (n=20) and age-matched control subjects (n=20). Proliferation of diabetic EPCs relative ...

Type-I fractures of the lateral tibial plateau were simulated by osteotomy in 18 pairs of unembalmed cadaver tibiae. One fracture of each pair was fixed with two lag screws whereas the contralateral site was stabilised with three lag screws, or two lag screws plus an antiglide screw. The lateral plateau was displaced downwards using a servohydraulic materials testing machine and the resulting force and articular surface gap were recorded. Yield load was defined as the maximum load needed to create ...

A retrospective analysis of 457 radical neck dissections (RNDs) performed for epidermoid cancers of the head and neck was performed. There was a 27 percent overall neck recurrence rate, 17 percent being confined to the neck. Only 5 percent occurred in the ipsilateral dissected neck. Failure in the neck correlated well with the node stage at the time of surgery, but was not affected by the size of the primary tumor, the timing of the RND, or the type of RND performed.
