Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II - Hunter syndrome) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency in the enzyme iduronate-2 sulfatase (I2S), leading to the accumulation of the glycosaminoglycans, affecting multiple organs and systems. Enzyme replacement therapy does not cross the blood brain barrier, limiting results in neurological forms of the disease. Another option of treatment for severe MPS, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has become the treatment of choice ...

Cells from Fanconi anemia (FA) patients are hypersensitive to alkylating agents and radiation traditionally used as conditioning regimens for marrow cell transplantation, and patients experience serious toxicities. To reduce toxicities, we used progressively lower doses of cyclophosphamide (CY) for conditioning. Here, we report the results in 43 FA patients who received marrow transplantation from HLA-matched related donors (37 siblings and 6 other relatives). Conditioning consisted of 15 mg CY/kg/ ...

The purpose of this report is to evaluate the value of urinary hyaluronan (HA) as a maker of residual transitional cell carcinoma (TCC). Urine samples were collected from 83 patients hospitalized for transurethral resection (TUR). Patient ages ranged from 36 to 86 years. Samples were taken both before and after surgery. HA analysis was performed using an "ELISA-like" fluorometric assay. Patients were divided into two groups: a control group whose previous diagnosis was negative for tumors (n = 22) and ...

We present the neurological complications evaluated in a series of 1000 patients who underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Central nervous system (CNS) neurological complications, particularly brain hemorrhages, were the most common, followed by seizures and CNS infections. Less frequent neurological complications were metabolic encephalopathy, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy ...

Reversible posterior leucoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS) has previously been described in patients who have renal insufficiency, eclampsia, hypertensive encephalopathy and patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy. The mechanism by which immunosuppressive agents can cause this syndrome is not clear, but it is probably related with cytotoxic effects of these agents on the vascular endothelium. We report eight patients who received cyclosporine A (CSA) after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation ...

This paper addresses the performance, the reporting channel traffic and the computational complexity of two blind centralized cooperative spectrum sensing schemes under the effect of unequal noise and received signal powers. The first one is the generalized likelihood ratio test with decision fusion, and with weighted and non-weighted data fusion of samples and eigenvalues. The second scheme is the circular folding cooperative power spectral density split cancellation method with data fusion. A ...

Introduction: HLA-Haploidentical bone marrow transplant (haplo-BMT) is a curative approach for individuals with severe sickle cell disease (SCD) who lack an HLA-identical sibling donor. Haplo-BMT expands the donor pool among adults and children with SCD to > 90% and is a less toxic treatment option than myeloablative matched related donor transplant, gene therapy or gene editing. In 2013, our research team developed a multi-institution learning collaborative with the main objective of optimizing ...

Gasoline is a very complex mixture of hundreds different components and, from a toxicological point of view, benzene is the most hazardous one. Some of the methods recommended present many drawbacks, such as time-consuming. Thus, the need to develop fast methods for routine analysis of benzene is fundamental to the quality control of gasoline. Therefore, the present work compared two different capillary columns to develop a new method for routine analysis of benzene in gasoline by HRGC–FID. The ...

Summary Allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is effective therapy for Fanconi anaemia (FA). FA patients do not tolerate conditioning with 200 mg/kg of cyclophosphamide (Cy), typically used in aplastic anaemia. We previously published results of studies in which Cy doses were gradually reduced from 200 to 100 mg/kg. Here we update results of the initial studies and report data on 30 new patients conditioned with Cy either at 80 mg/kg ( n = 7) or at 60 mg/kg ( n = 23), given over 4 days before ...
