To comprehensively characterize monocyte and neutrophil responses to E. coli and its product [lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or endotoxin] in vitro during pregnancy. Peripheral blood was collected from pregnant women during the third trimester (n = 20) and from non-pregnant women (n = 20). The number, phagocytic activity, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production of peripheral monocytes and neutrophils were investigated using flow cytometry. The phenotypes of peripheral monocytes and neutrophils after acute ...

Is it possible to explore an association between individual sperm kinematics evaluated in real time and spermatozoa selected by an embryologist for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), with subsequent normal fertilization and blastocyst formation using a novel artificial vision-based software (SiD V1.0; IVF 2.0, UK)?ICSI procedures were randomly video recorded and subjected to analysis using SiD V1.0, proprietary software developed by our group. In total, 383 individual spermatozoa were retrospectively ...

In south-central Chile, wood stoves have been identified as an important source of air pollution in populated areas. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), Chilean oak (Nothofagus oblique), and mimosa (Acacia dealbata) were burned in a single-chamber slow-combustion wood stove at a controlled testing facility located at the University of Concepción, Chile. In each experiment, 2.7-3.1 kg of firewood were combusted while continuously monitoring temperature, exhaust gases, burn rate, and collecting particulate ...

Abstract In this work, the applicability of a new algorithm for the estimation of mechanical properties from instrumented indentation data was studied for thin films. The applicability was analyzed with the aid of both three-dimensional finite element simulations and experimental indentation tests. The numerical approach allowed studying the effect of the substrate on the estimation of mechanical properties of the film, which was conducted based on the ratio h max /l between maximum indentation depth ...

Depth sensing indentation study was conducted in a Fischerscope H100V machine, equipped with a Vickers indenter with a tip roundness of approximately 1330 nm. Tests were carried out on soda-lime glass, fused silica, sapphire, aluminum (1100 alloy), high alloyed steel, titanium and copper. The widely used iterative method of Oliver and Pharr was unsuccessful in the attempts to analyze machine compliance and indenter area function. Therefore, an alternative procedure was adopted. The alternative procedure ...

In this work, the sliding wear of AISI 304 and AISI 316 austenitic stainless steels was studied as a function of applied load (from 6 to 20 N) and tangential velocity (from 0.07 to 0.81 m s−1). Wear experiments were conducted in a commercial pin-on-disc equipment and were designed with response surface methodology. Worn surfaces and wear debris were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, surface temperature and instrumented indentation. Results indicated ...

Summary The generation of a set of particles with high initial volume fraction is a major problem in the context of discrete element simulations. Advancing front algorithms provide an effective means to generate dense packings when spherical particles are assumed. The objective of this paper is to extend an advancing front algorithm to a wider class of particles with generic size and shape. In order to get a dense packing, each new particle is placed in contact with other two (or three in 3D) particles ...

Abstract Exposed sections of accretionary orogens allow reconstruction of their tectonic evolution. Most commonly, orogens are characterized by two‐dimensional shortening perpendicular to the orogenic front. We describe the midcrustal section of the backarc of the early Paleozoic Famatinian accretionary orogen, exposed in the Sierra de Quilmes. Here crustal deformation evolved from a typical two‐dimensional shortening with tectonic transport toward the west, to a noncoaxial constrictional strain ...

Numerical modeling of arc welding and correlated processes tend to be challenging, since they have complex physical phenomena. Several heat sources, with geometric parameters to be adjusted, have been developed to impose the energy input of the process. This study proposes two variable profile heat sources, with only two geometrical parameters, that intend to achieve good accuracy, regardless the welding process, base material and thickness of the welded plates. These sources are tested against ...

The widespread application of soluble enzymes in industrial processes is considered restrict due to instability of enzymes outside optimum operating conditions. For instance, enzyme immobilization can overcome this issue. In fact, chitosan–based nanofibers have outstanding properties, which can improve the efficiency in enzyme immobilization and the stability of enzymes over a wide range of operating conditions. These properties include biodegradability, antimicrobial activity, non–toxicity, presence ...

Abstract The response of sediment routing to climatic changes across icehouse-to-greenhouse turnovers is not well documented in Earth's pre-Cenozoic sedimentary record. Southwest Gondwana hosts one of the thickest and most laterally extensive records of Earth's penultimate icehouse, the late Paleozoic ice age. We present the first high-resolution U-Pb zircon chemical abrasion–isotope dilution–thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-ID-TIMS) analysis of late Paleozoic ice age deposits in the Kalahari ...

The arc welding process involve complex physical and chemical phenomena, which makes mathematical modeling difficult. Its modeling uses the heat source concept to model the energy input, that requires geometric parameters to be calibrated. However, to obtain an adequate accuracy, some heat sources have many parameters to be defined, which demands great computational time, even using optimization methodologies. In this paper, an optimization methodology, including a new technique called Reduced Geometry, ...

The present study aims to determine whether 17DD-YF-specific humoral and cellular immunological memory is maintained 8-years after primary vaccination with subdoses (10,447IU;3,013IU;587IU;158IU;31IU). Our results demonstrated that vaccinees, who had seroconverted following primary vaccination and had not been revaccinated, present similar neutralizing antibodies levels and YF-specific cellular memory, particularly CMCD4 and EMCD8 as compared to the reference full dose (27,476IU). Although, PRNT seropositivity ...

The Neoproterozoic, post-collisional, Graciosa Province (southern Brazil) comprises several A-type intrusions and related volcanics of alkaline and subalkaline (or aluminous) petrographic associations. U-Pb age determinations, trace element, and Hf and O isotopic compositions were obtained for zircons from six distinct A-type granitic and syenitic plutons from both alkaline and subalkaline associations from the province. Chitosan exhibits outstanding properties, which allow a wide range of applications. For this reason, chitosan-based biomaterials have been developed over the years and, among these biomaterials, chitosan-based nanomaterials may significantly change the material properties, which could result in some exceptional features. The location, longevity, and geographic extent of late Paleozoic ice centers in west-central Gondwana remain ambiguous. Paleovalleys on the Rio Grande do Sul Shield of southernmost Brazil have previously been interpreted as fjords carved by outlet glaciers that originated in Africa and emptied into the Paraná Basin (Brazil).
