To test whether inactivated influenza vaccines distributed during the 2003–2004 influenza season in the northern hemisphere were able to confer protection against the mismatched variant A/Fujian/411/2002 virus strain, we measured haemagglutination inhibiting (HI) antibodies in elderly subjects vaccinated with three inactivated vaccines against the homologous A/H3N2 vaccine strain (A/Panama) and against the mismatched A/Fujian strain. The results showed that, while 76 to 80% of elder people vaccinated ...

Fluorine-19 (19F) MRI of injected perfluorocarbon emulsions (PFCs) allows for the non-invasive quantification of inflammation and cell tracking, but suffers from a low signal-to-noise ratio and extended scan time. To address this limitation, we tested the hypothesis that a 19F MRI pulse sequence that combines a specific undersampling regime with signal averaging has increased sensitivity and robustness against motion artifacts compared to a non-averaged fully-sampled dataset, when both are reconstructed ...

To propose and validate new taekwondo-specific cardiopulmonary exercise tests.Twelve male national-level taekwondo athletes (age 20 [2] y, body mass 67.5 [5.7] kg, height 175 [8] cm, and training experience 7 [3] y) performed 3 separate exercise tests in a randomized counterbalanced order: (1) a treadmill running cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) and (2) continuous and (3) interval taekwondo-specific cardiopulmonary exercise tests (cTKDet and iTKDet, respectively). The CPET was administered using an individualized ...

In this paper we consider a general equilibrium problem in a Hilbert space defined on a closed and convex set. We show a Tikhonov-type regularization method that can be extended for the equilibrium problem. Under mild assumptions we establish the equivalence between the existence of solution of the original problem and the boundedness of the sequence generated by regularized problems.

Let k be an algebraically closed field and let HilbdG(PkN) be the open locus of the Hilbert scheme Hilbd(PkN) corresponding to Gorenstein subschemes. We prove that HilbdG(PkN) is irreducible for d≤9. Moreover we also give a complete picture of its singular locus in the same range d≤9. Such a description of the singularities gives some evidence to a conjecture on the nature of the singular points in HilbdG(PkN) that we state at the end of the paper.

In this paper we present a procedure for computing the rational sum of the Hilbert series of a finitely generated monomial right module N over the free associative algebra K〈x1,…,xn〉. We show that such procedure terminates, that is, the rational sum exists, when all the cyclic submodules decomposing N are annihilated by monomial right ideals whose monomials define regular formal languages. The method is based on the iterative application of the colon right ideal operation to monomial ideals which ...

We continue from Part 1. We will illustrate the general theory of Hamiltonian mechanics in the Lie group formalism. We then obtain the Hamiltonian formalism in the Hilbert spaces of square integrable functions on the symplectic spaces. We illustrate this general theory with several concrete examples, two of which are the representations of the Lorentz group and the Poincaré group with interactions.

In the context that arose from an old problem of Lang regarding the torsion points on subvarieties of Gmd, we describe the points that lie in a given variety, are defined over the cyclotomic closure kc of a number field k, and map to a torsion point under a finite projection to Gmd. We apply this result to obtain a sharp and explicit version of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem over kc. Concerning the arithmetic of dynamics in one variable, we obtain by related methods a complete description of the ...

Kernel-based approximation methods—often in the form of radial basis functions—have been used for many years now and usually involve setting up a kernel matrix which may be ill-conditioned when the shape parameter of the kernel takes on extreme values, i.e., makes the kernel "flat". In this paper we present an algorithm we refer to as the Hilbert-Schmidt SVD and use it to emphasize two important points which—while not entirely new—present a paradigm shift under way in the practical application of ...

In this paper we introduce a class of noncommutative (finitely generated) monomial algebras whose Hilbert series are algebraic functions. We use the concept of graded homology and the theory of unambiguous context-free grammars for this purpose. We also provide examples of finitely presented graded algebras whose corresponding leading monomial algebras belong to the proposed class and hence possess algebraic Hilbert series.

In this paper, we propose methods for computing the Hilbert series of multigraded right modules over the free associative algebra. In particular, we compute such series for noncommutative multigraded algebras. Using results from the theory of regular languages, we provide conditions when the methods are effective and hence the sum of the Hilbert series is a rational function. Moreover, a characterization of finite-dimensional algebras is obtained in terms of the nilpotency of a key matrix involved ...

Quantum computation and quantum computational logics are intrinsically connected with some puzzling epistemic problems. In the framework of a quantum computational approach to epistemic logic we investigate the following question: is it possible to interpret the basic epistemic operations (having information, knowing) as special kinds of Hilbert-space operations? We show that non-trivial knowledge operations cannot be represented by unitary operators. We introduce the notions of strong epistemic quantum ...

We study families of ropes of any codimension that are supported on lines. We construct suitable smooth parameter spaces and conclude that all ropes of fixed degree and genus lie in the same component of the corresponding Hilbert scheme. We show that this component is generically smooth if the genus is small enough unless the characteristic of the ground field is two and the curves under consideration have degree two. In this case the component is non-reduced.

Inspired by recent results in the context of AdS/CFT integrability, we reconsider the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations describing the 1D fermionic Hubbard model at finite temperature. We prove that the infinite set of TBA equations are equivalent to a simple nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problem for a finite number of unknown functions. The latter can be transformed into a set of three coupled nonlinear integral equations defined over a finite support, which can be easily solved numerically. We ...

The upside-down simple harmonic oscillator system is studied in the contexts of quantum mechanics and classical statistical mechanics. It is shown that in order to study in a simple manner the creation and decay of a physical system by way of Gamow vectors we must formulate the theory in a time-asymmetric fashion, namely using two different rigged Hilbert spaces to describe states evolving toward the past and the future. The spaces defined in the contexts of quantum and classical statistical mechanics ...
