Abstract Background The neurocognitive trajectory in bipolar disorder (BD) is variable, with controversial findings, and most evidence come from cross-sectional studies. We aimed to examine the course of neurocognitive functioning in a sample of euthymic BD patients in comparison with a control group during a 5-year follow-up. Methods Ninety-nine euthymic bipolar patients and 40 healthy controls were assessed using a comprehensive neurocognitive battery (six neurocognitive domains) at baseline (T1) ...

Article AbstractObjective: The development of alcohol dependence is associated with specific individual personality traits and previous consumption of other drugs of abuse. However, there is little information on these risk factors in heavy drinkers before and after they meet the criteria for alcohol dependence. This study examined the influence of cocaine use and the role of impulsivity in the development of DSM-IV alcohol dependence in nondependent drinkers in a 4-year follow-up study. Method: ...

Impulsivity has been associated with alcohol dependence, but impulsivity in alcohol-dependent subjects with a Cluster-B personality disorder (PD) has not been well characterized. Using a variety of laboratory measures of impulsivity, we assessed whether alcohol-dependent patients (ADP) with borderline personality disorder (BPD) exhibited the same pattern of behavioral impulsivity than ADP with antisocial personality disorder (AntPD). Also, differences between ADP without PDs and healthy controls were ...

Depressive disorders are present in a high percentage of Mexican American adolescents. Among the US Mexican American population, suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 10- to 19-year-olds. Little research, however, has focused on Mexican American adolescents' knowledge and views about depression and seeking help for depression. Results from a qualitative study on Mexican American adolescents' attitudes about depression are investigated in this paper. Sixty-five high school and middle ...

Background Biomarkers can facilitate the diagnosis of sepsis, enabling early management and improving outcomes. Lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) has been reported as a biomarker for the detection of infection, but its diagnostic value is controversial. In this study, we assessed the diagnostic accuracy of LBP for sepsis in the emergency department (ED) patients, comparing it with more established biomarkers of sepsis, including procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP). Methods LBP and ...

The standard enthalpy of formation of gaseous 2-adamantyl chloride(2-Ad-Cl) was determined by calorimetric techniques. The standard Gibbs energy change for the chloride anion exchange between 1-adamantyl (1-Ad+) and 2-adamantyl (2-Ad+) cations in the gas phase was obtained by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance spectroscopy (FT ICR). Theoretical calculations at the G2(MP2) level were performed on these and other relevant species. This and data from the literature provided three highly consistent ...

Leachates derived from landfills constitute a potential risk of groundwater pollution because a variety of contaminants can be released by leaking from the contention system. Therefore, the leachate composition is of interest of their appropriate management. Although the leachate characterisation is usually carried out by global parameters (i.e. DOC, BOD, COD, AOX, etc), its characterisation at molecular level is of increasing interest and will be reviewed in the present article. Sample handling ...

Flux decline with time is one of the most serious shortcomings of microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes. It is highly desirable to have a membrane (fouling) testing procedure that is short in duration, utilizes a minimum amount of test solution, only requires a small membrane area, and is representative of the large-scale process. The objective of this study was to compare the results of the testing of a given membrane using a number of different test units (reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, ...

One of the main characteristics of a video surveillance system is its reliability. To this end, it is needed that the images captured by the videocameras are an accurate representation of the scene. Unfortunately, some activities can make the proper operation of the cameras fail, distorting in some way the images which are going to be processed. When these activities are voluntary, they are usually called sabotage, which include partial o total occlusion of the lens, image defocus or change of the ...

A partial least squares (PLS) calibration method is suggested for the evaluation of multicomponent kinetic data. The advantage is that no kinetic model is assumed and only the information from the kinetic curves themselves is used. In the procedure proposed, a model is developed from samples of known composition, i.e., a calibration set, and is then used to predict unknowns, i.e., concentrations of the components in a test set. The use of the PLS method for multicomponent kinetic analysis is demonstrated ...

Mercury is a widely distributed environmental pollutant, able to induce toxicity in living organisms, including higher plants. Some plant species are able to grow in mine sites, like the Almadén zone in Spain. Our study focus on two of these plant species, Rumex induratus and Marrubium vulgare and their responses to natural Hg exposure. Total Hg concentration in the soil below the plants could be classified as toxic, although the available fraction was low. Hg availability was higher for the M. ...

New polyethersulfone (PES) based membranes for ultrafiltration (UF) were developed by blending a surface-modifying macromolecule (SMM) in the casting solution, in an attempt to minimize the impact of fouling. Fouling was evaluated using concentrated Ottawa River water (CORW), either unfractionated or fractionated via UF. These membranes also included some polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a pore forming additive. A statistical analysis was conducted to evaluate the impact of some variables on the treatment ...
