In modern implant dentistry there are several clinical indications for laser surgery. Different laser systems have a considerable spectrum of application in soft and hard peri-implant tissues. The literature was searched for clinical application of different laser wavelengths in peri-implant tissues: second-stage surgery of submerged implants, treatment of infrabony defects, removal of peri-implant hyperplastic overgrowths, and, possibly, the preparation of bone cavities for implant placement. This ...

A 420-bp fragment from the 5' end of the rat thyroperoxidase (TPO) gene was fused to a luciferase reporter and shown to direct cell-type-specific expression when transfected into rat thyroid FRTL-5 cells. Analysis of this DNA fragment revealed four regions of the promoter which interact with DNA-binding proteins present in FRTL-5 cells. Mutation of the DNA sequence within any of these regions reduced TPO promoter activity. The trans-acting factors binding to these sequences were compared with thyroid ...

The mechanism responsible for the stimulation of thyroglobulin (Tg) gene expression by insulin and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) in rat thyroid FRTL-5 cells has been investigated. Both insulin and IGF-I stimulate transcription from the Tg promoter in a transient transfection assay demonstrating that the promoter used contains the DNA signals necessary for insulin and IGF-I regulation. Promoter mutations that interfere with the binding of thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF-1), TTF-2, and the ...

The three-dimensional structure of a site-directed mutant of the bacterially expressed Fv fragment from monoclonal antibody D1.3, complexed to the specific antigen lysozyme has been determined to a nominal resolution of 1.8 A using X-ray diffraction data. The replacement of VL Trp92 by Asp allows two water molecules to occupy space taken by Trp92 in the wild-type complex, in agreement with a previous observation that water molecules play an important role in stabilizing this antigen-antibody complex. ...

In this study, the authors prospectively evaluated long-term psychosocial and neurocognitive performance in patients suffering from nonaneurysmal, nontraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and investigated the association between the APOE-epsilon4 genotype and outcome in these patients. All patients admitted to the authors' institution between January 2001 and January 2003 with spontaneous nonaneurysmal SAH were prospectively examined (mean follow-up 59.8 months). The APOE genotype was determined ...

Understanding the population dynamics of migratory animals and predicting the consequences of environmental change requires knowing how populations are spatially connected between different periods of the annual cycle. We used stable isotopes to examine patterns of migratory connectivity across the range of the western sandpiper Calidris mauri . First, we developed a winter isotope basemap from stable‐hydrogen (δD), ‐carbon (δ 13 C), and ‐nitrogen (δ 15 N) isotopes of feathers grown in wintering areas. ...

Flexible spikes The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike protein enables viral entry into host cells by binding to the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor and is a major target for neutralizing antibodies. About 20 to 40 spikes decorate the surface of virions. Turoňová et al. now show that the spike is flexibly connected to the viral surface by three hinges that are well protected by glycosylation sites. The flexibility imparted by these hinges may explain ...

The structure of the fish assemblies and the function of tidal flats as breeding areas were described. The samples were collected monthly on the quadrature low tide with a seine net (30 x 1.5 m and one cm mesh between adjacent knots), in two tidal flats of the euhaline section of Paranagua Bay: one in front of a marsh, subject to more intensive currents and with the prevalence of fine sand, and other in front of a mangrove, in an area with less intensive currents and a substratum formed mainly by ...

Tidal creeks are strongly influenced by tides and are therefore exposed to large differences in salinity and depth daily. Here we compare fish assemblages in tidal creeks between day and night in two tidal creeks in southern Brazil. Monthly day and night, simultaneous collections were carried out in both creeks using fyke nets. Clupeiformes tended to be caught more during the day. Cathorops spixii, Genidens genidens and Rypticus randalli tended to be caught at night. Sciaenidae also tended to be ...

Os peixes foram coletados mensalmente no período de junho de 2003 a maio de 2004, com rede de arrasto de fundo. De cada exemplar foram tomados os dados de comprimento total, peso total, sexo e peso da gônada.
