Two different descriptions of EEG maturation are compared: a broad-band spectral parameters (BBSPs) model and a recently developed xi-alpha (ξα) model. 'Developmental equations' were obtained for both parameter sets using 1 min, eyes closed EEG sample from 165 normal children (5–12 years old). At each age, the ξα parameter set described the average spectrum more closely than the BBSP developmental equations. Furthermore, a more detailed picture of changes of spectral shape with age is. possible with ...

Article AbstractBackground: Spanish-speaking individuals comprise a growing percentage of the United States population. They have greater difficulty than most in accessing and remaining in psychiatric treatments, including psychotherapy, their stated preference. The literature on cultural competence in treating Hispanic patients provides few details of psychotherapeutic adaptations. Objective: This article, based on interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) supervision for a low-socioeconomic sample of monolingual ...

A selection of seven phytocannabinoids representative of the major structural types of classic cannabinoids and their corresponding cannabivarins was investigated for in vivo topical anti-inflammatory activity in the Croton oil mouse ear dermatitis assay. Differences in the terpenoid moiety were far more important for anti-inflammatory activity than those at the C-3 alkyl residue, suggesting the involvement not only of cannabinoid receptors, but also of other inflammatory end-points targeted by ...

Abstract Three preparations of Hypericum perforatum L. (a hydroalcoholic extract, a lipophilic extract and an ethylacetic fraction) and the pure compounds hypericin, adhyperforin, amentoflavone, hyperoside, isoquercitrin, hyperforin dicyclohexylammonium (DHCA) salt and dicyclohexylamine were evaluated for their topical anti-inflammatory activity. H. perforatum preparations provoked a dose-dependent reduction of Croton-oil-induced ear oedema in mice, showing the following rank order of activity: lipophilic ...

Nurse-plant effects have been used as an effective reforestation and restoration strategy, and mulching has also effectively ameliorated soil-adverse conditions. However, use of nurse plants is limited by the presence of suitable nurse species before trees are planted, and use of mulching depends on availability of appropriate materials. The effects of Lupinus elegans as a nurse plant and pine-bark mulch were tested on three conifer species: Pinus montezumae, Pinus pseudostrobus, and Abies religiosa. ...

Abstract In S. cerevisiae, K + transport relies principally on two structurally related membrane proteins, known as Trk1p and Trk2p. Direct involvement in cation movements has been demonstrated for Trk1p, which is a high‐affinity K + transporter. Initially described as a low‐affinity K + transporter, Trk2p seems to play a minor role in K + transport, since its activity is only apparent under very specific conditions, such as in a Δ sin3 background. Here we show that growth of a Δ trk1 Δ sin3 double mutant, ...

The interactions of electro-elastic fields with voids and cracks contained in a piezoelectric solid are addressed both in closed form and numerically. The numerical algorithm, based on finite elements, is used to generate results that compare very well with available analytical solutions. Through the numerical results, it is shown that the simplified impermeable and the exact electric boundary conditions lead to the same result when the hole is open, but differ significantly when the hole is rather ...

Peripheral nervous system involvement in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) can take the form of an acute or chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, polyradiculopathy, mononeuropathy multiplex, or autonomic neuropathy. There is no widely held consensus on the etiology of PNS or other neurological complications associated with HIV infection. We report here that PNS disease in HIV-infected individuals is associated with intrathecal synthesis of an antibody directed against sulfatide, ...

A method for locating and estimating structural damage in two and three-dimensional analytical models of buildings is presented. Damage is defined in terms of changes in elements stiffness. Since the geometrical transformation matrix used to obtain the condensed stiffness matrix of a structure can be estimated, for the damaged state, from the one corresponding to the non-damaged state with an iterative scheme, it is possible to detect structural damage by comparing changes on structural dynamic ...

Mine tailings (MTs) are ore residuals after valuable metals were extracted during mineral processing, which can be reused to produce the geopolymer concrete for construction and building applications, to mitigate the storage, economic, and environmental pressures. However, the pure MTs did not have enough reactive aluminum or amorphous aluminosilicates for better geopolymerization effects. It is necessary to add other materials as the additional aluminum source and amorphous additives to change the ...

Sustainably reusing mine tailings and reducing the economic costs of storing them is an ongoing concern in the geomechanics field. This paper discusses the process of utilizing MTs in the manufacture of geopolymer through alkaline activation. Since geopolymer is subjected to various external and internal loading conditions that could result in failures and fractures, understanding the fracture behaviors of MTs-based geopolymer is critically important for its use and application. The fracture behaviors ...

As a potential alternative of Portland cement concrete for construction and building applications, solid-like geopolymer made by alkali-activation of the mine tailings (MTs) shares the similar brittle properties with rocks and concrete. However, the pure MTs did not have sufficient amorphous aluminosilicates for better alkali activation. It is essential to add some materials as the source of amorphous aluminosilicates for better reactivity to adjust the geoploymeric cell structures and improve the ...

This paper presents an investigation on the durability and leaching behavior of gold MTs-based geopolymer by conducting a series of experiments that included uniaxial compressive tests (UCT) and static monolithic leaching tests, considering submersion into three different reagent solutions: deionized (DI) water, salty water, and acidic water to mimic its resistance to different environmental impacts. The strength degradation of the geopolymer prior to and after immersion in different reagent solutions ...

The emergence of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains displaying high levels of multidrug resistance is of great concern worldwide and a serious threat for the outcome of the infection. Modifications of the bacterial envelope by antibiotics may assist the recognition and clearance of the pathogen by the host immune system. Recognition of S. pneumoniae resistant strains by the complement component C3b was increased in the presence of specific anti-pneumococcal antibodies and subinhibitory concentrations ...

The transformation matrix method for damage detection in structural elements of frame buildings, expressed as the loss of stiffness, is proposed and evaluated. The method, which allows the locating and assessing of the damage magnitude of structural elements by considering the contribution of each of them to the overall performance of the structure, is applicable to two- and three-dimensional building frames of several storeys and bays with one or several damaged elements. Effects of uncertainties ...

The present research proposes a structural equation model to integrate four latent variables: managerial commitment, preventive maintenance, total productive maintenance, and productivity benefits. In addition, these variables are related through six research hypotheses that are validated using collected data from 368 surveys administered in the Mexican manufacturing industry. Consequently, the model is evaluated using partial least squares. The results show that managerial commitment is critical ...

SUMMARY In recent years several studies have reported the effects of early postpartum contact betèeen mother and infant. These effects are thought to be the result of interactions during a unique period occurring soon after delivery: a sensitive period èhich appears to be optimal for the formation of a strong bond of affection in the mother. The purpose of the present study èas to explore hoè long this sensitive period lasts. Sixty primiparous Guatemalan mothers aged betèeen 16 and 35 years èere ...

We studied the effects of a supportive lay woman ("doula") on the length of labor and on mother-infant interaction after delivery in healthy Guatemalan primigravid women. Initial assignment of mothers to the experimental (doula) or control group was random, but controls showed a higher rate (P less than 0.001) of subsequent perinatal problems (e.g. cesarean section and meconium staining). It was necessary to admit 103 mothers to the control group and 33 to the experimental group to obtain 20 in each ...

Unprocessed breast milk is currently being used as a desirable feeding alternative for premature infants. To assess some of the potential risks of this practice, we studied the bacterial growth in 41 samples of unprocessed human milk for a period of five days. No bacteria were cultured in eight samples of milk; the bacteria that were cultured in the remaining 33 samples were similar to those found on the skin and nipple of the breast. With the exception of three samples, two with Klebsiella and ...

The drag reduction in a circular cylinder was explored by means of a novel three electrode plasma actuator (DBDE). The DBDE actuator can reduce the drag coefficient up to a ~25% respect to the base flow drag coefficient. It has been demonstrated that, within the present experimental conditions, the DBDE actuator, for a fixed value of the power coefficient, adds a higher momentum to the flow and, consequently, produces a higher drag reduction than the DBD actuator with the same power coefficient. The ...
