Skeletal muscle is capable of phenotypic adaptation to environmental factors, such as nutrient availability, by altering the balance between muscle catabolism and anabolism that in turn coordinates muscle growth. Small noncoding RNAs, known as microRNAs (miRNAs), repress the expression of target mRNAs, and many studies have demonstrated that miRNAs regulate the mRNAs of catabolic and anabolic genes. We evaluated muscle morphology, gene expression of components involved in catabolism, anabolism and ...

Birds nesting activity during the short antarctic summer promotes intense localized sea–land transference of nutrients and organic matter, originating the ornithogenic soils. This study presents chemical, physical and mineralogical data as well as some micropedological and submicroscopical characteristics of ornithogenic and non-ornithogenic soils from the western coast of the Admiralty Bay, King George Island. Chemical analyses of selected soil properties show P and N enrichment in ornithogenic ...

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers the possibility of tracking cells labelled with a contrast agent and evaluating the progress of cell therapies. This requires efficient cell labelling with contrast agents. A basic incubation of cells with iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) is a common method. This study reports the synthesis at the gram scale of iron oxide nanoparticles as MRI T 2 contrast agents for cell labelling. These NPs are based on small iron oxide cores coated with a thin polysiloxane shell ...

The frequency, distribution, and clinical significance of pagetoid changes in urothelial carcinoma in situ (CIS) were studied in over 600 tissue slides from 102 patients followed for a mean period of over 4 years. Results indicate that pagetoid changes are unusual, randomly distributed, and never widespread. These changes occur in a histologic setting of CIS and apparently never appear as the initial lesion, even in cases in which CIS is the primary or only neoplasm. Patients manifesting pagetoid ...

Proton radiography seems to be a promising tool for assessing the quality of the stopping power computation in proton therapy. However, range error maps obtained on the basis of proton radiographs are very sensitive to small misalignment between the planning CT and the proton radiography acquisitions. In order to be able to mitigate misalignment in postprocessing, the authors implemented a fast method for registration between pencil proton radiography data obtained with a multilayer ionization chamber ( ...

The total contents of potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) in selected Brazilian soils (Oxisols, Ultisols, Inceptsols, and Alfisols) developed from different parent materials were investigated to estimate the contribution of clay minerals to K and Mg reserves. Total K and Mg contents in the Na-saturated clay were determined by HF total digestion. The contribution of each mineral species to the total contents of K and Mg, was estimated by a sequential mineral extraction procedure, following the order: Na- ...

Abstract Amazonian Dark Earths (ADEs) are unusually fertile soils characterised by elevated concentrations of microscopic charcoal particles, which confer their distinctive colouration. Frequent occurrences of pre-Columbian artefacts at ADE sites led to their ubiquitous classification as Anthrosols (soils of anthropic origin). However, it remains unclear how indigenous peoples created areas of high fertility in one of the most nutrient-impoverished environments on Earth. Here, we report new data from ...

Highly weathered kaolinitic soils in Brazil often have adequate levels of K and Mg to support plant growth. The source of K and Mg in these soils and their relationship with the dominant mineral, kaolinite, is addressed in this article. Crystallographic, chemical, and morphological properties of kaolinite, from selected highly weathered Brazilian soils, were investigated by x‐ray diffraction (XRD), analytical electron microscopy (AEM), chemical, and thermal methods. Kaolinite properties showed significant ...

Analyses of somatic hypermutation (SHM) patterns in B cell Ig sequences have important basic science and clinical applications, but they are often confounded by the intrinsic biases of SHM targeting on specific DNA motifs (i.e., hot and cold spots). Modeling these biases has been hindered by the difficulty in identifying mutated Ig sequences in vivo in the absence of selection pressures, which skew the observed mutation patterns. To generate a large number of unselected mutations, we immunized B1- ...

The general physical and chemical properties of Antarctic soils have been long studied, although detailed soil mineralogy remains comparatively little explored. The aim of this study was to characterize the clay mineralogy of soils from Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, Maritime Antarctica. The clay fraction of four soil profiles was studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD). Poorly crystalline mineral phases were sequentially treated with 0.1 mol L−1 sodium pyrophosphate, 0.2 mol L−1 ammonium oxalate, ...

The B cell response to Salmonella typhimurium (STm) occurs massively at extrafollicular sites, without notable germinal centers (GCs). Little is known in terms of its specificity. To expand the knowledge of antigen targets, we screened plasmablast (PB)-derived monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for Salmonella specificity, using ELISA, flow cytometry, and antigen microarray.
