Squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix metastatic to the spleen is an uncommon occurrence which has only been reported in small numbers in autopsy series. We present a case of a 47-year-old patient with a Stage IIb carcinoma of the cervix, treated with radiotherapy in 1990. Four years after completion of primary treatment she presented with a voluminous left hypochondrium and epigastrium mass. An exploratory laparotomy was performed and a splenic cyst 19 cm in diameter was found. The pathological ...

The effects of obesity and metabolic syndrome (MS) on bone health are controversial. Furthermore, the relationship between body composition and bone quality has not yet been determined in this context. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlations between body composition and bone mineral density (BMD) and bone microstructure in obese individuals with MS. This cross-sectional study assessed 50 obese individuals with MS with respect to their body composition and BMD, both assessed using ...

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to cephalometrically compare the dentoskeletal and soft-tissue changes consequent to orthodontic treatment in patients with Class II subdivision malocclusion treated with asymmetric and symmetric extractions. Methods: The sample included 54 patients with Class II subdivision malocclusion and full complement of permanent teeth, including first molars, at the beginning of treatment. Patients in group 1 (n = 27) were treated with the asymmetric extraction of 3 premolars ...

Clostridium difficile is an emerging enteropathogen of humans and domestic animals. The bacterium was recently confirmed to be present in foals and dogs in Brazil, with some recent studies suggesting that C. difficile is one of the most important causes of piglet diarrhea in the country. Moreover, some reports also suggest the transmission of this microorganism between animals and humans, raising the possibility that C. difficile is a zoonotic disease. Therefore, the aim of the present review is ...

The use of immunobiological agents for the treatment of autoimmune diseases is increasing in medical practice. Anti-TNF therapies have been increasingly used in refractory autoimmune diseases, especially rheumatoid arthritis, with promising results. However, the use of such therapies has been associated with an increased risk of developing other autoimmune diseases. In addition, the use of anti-TNF agents can cause pulmonary complications, such as reactivation of mycobacterial and fungal infections, ...

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is a disease with variable clinical presentation in which inflammation in the lung parenchyma is caused by the inhalation of specific organic antigens or low molecular weight substances in genetically susceptible individuals. Alterations of the acute, subacute and chronic forms may eventually overlap, and the diagnosis based on temporality and presence of fibrosis (acute/inflammatory HP vs. chronic HP) seems to be more feasible and useful in clinical practice.
